Hi I'm Emma and live in Piara Waters (near Canning Vale)which isn't far from you. would be happy to meet for coffee and a chat. I have 2 little ones (ages 3 and 1) so anywhere they can run around in the garden is good. There is a pub down the road from me called C Y OConnors if you want to meet for coffee? Also came over in February this year, I love it here, am glad the weather's getting better!!! xx

hi karen - i'm no use to you as i am in the north and also because I am headed back to the uk in the near future  But just wanted to say hang in there - it does get easier. its a horrible feeling to begin with - most of us left behind a number of friends and thought we were popular enough only to end up feeling like a social leper!! some will advise you to accept every invitation type of thing - i tried that but ended up getting in akward situations where after a few meetings we realised we had absolutely nothing in common (other than emigrating) but were too embarrassed to admit there was never going to be a 'friendship'. but people i got to know slowly over months/years have became good friends that I treasure and will really miss - these have been through work, through the children and one girl that i stood next to at keep fit class for 3 months and we just started talking one night and it snowballed from there. quality not quantity i would say. if you are sporty, i have heard there are a few running groups down that way but i cant remember the name of it sorry - but i have heard they socialise a lot too - maybe someone else will know?? hopefully you will click with some people who respond to this post and start to feel normal again!!

Mandurha BBQ

Hi Guys notice some of you are in my neck of the woods and doing some shameless promotion of my meetup group :cute:

We hold meetups monthly, whilst not all have been child friendly I am trying to incorporate some into the timetable. Its a very informal group and you are welcome to attend as and when you like.

Our December meetup is a BBQ at my house in Silver Sands (Mandurah). I will be providing salads/rolls/condiments/plates etc all you need to bring is your own meat/vege option to throw on the BBQ. The BBQ is on the 5th December and starts at 1pm. Kids welcome and we have a pool which is free for everyones use.

Details can be found on my site, please RSVP on the site or email me confirmation so I know how many to cater for.

Site address:

Brits Abroad Meet Up Group (Perth) - Meetup.com

Karen :)

ps. seems like a lot of Karen's which is great for me, not only will I not forget anyones names but If I do something wrong no one will know which one of us it was!! Safety in numbers lol

Hi Mari

I used to live in Yokine right by Joondanna, don't you love the name of the shopping centre..Dog Swamp! Very inviting lol.

If you want to come up on the 5th I am offering to pick people up from the train station until 2.30pm (after that Im opening my wine!) and we can order taxis to take you back to the train station when you've had enough! You can get to us from Perth train station (underground part) we are on the Mandurah Line, and its the very last stop. The train does take about 50 mins just to warn you! You are more than welcom to bring you son not sure if anyone will be his age will have to see who RSVP's. Hopefully being in school will help him with some mates, does he like soccer? I think there are a few teams up there....I will ask my friend in Quinns if she knows of anything, might be worth a post.

Your head must still be swimming for just arriving! I remember that feeling! Usually I would offer to come and meet you for a coffee but Ive got an essay due on the 23rd and exams on the 14th. I'm having to do a Post Grad online from England while working to turn my 457 into a permanent visa!! Still only another 18mnths of this to go!! (ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH)

Certainly in the NY I will be a bit more approachable, I know people who have met at our meetups before are starting to meetup in between, so hopefully this will help.

Guys, the original post was out back in 2009 so no idea whether they got `out there` to anything that was going on in the Perth area.

Remember tho, making friends takes time. You are not going to have the same friendships that you had in the UK. Those friendships may have taken 10-20 years to cultivate!!!
