WHO WE ARE: A State of quivering expectation A column about Australia AWESOME is the only word for the power, reach and influence of this column's readers. A matter of days after they resoundingly endorsed this column's campaign to abolish State governments (which we listed as number 4 priority on The National To-Do List after becoming a republic, amalgamating with New Zealand and fixing the coat of arms), our political leaders start the process of abolition

Load of rubbish IMO,David Dale has been flogging this horse for years and it's just about dead.

Commentators like Dale would do the country an enormous favor if he did something useful with his opinions like suggest how to fix the state of the health system, the lack of infrastructure in key areas like regional broadband, the water crisis etc, absolutely none of these issues would be addressed by abolishing state governments-there is one level of government that needs to go and that is local government.

I agree Nigel, especially the last lines, get rid of local governments - there is so much rorting, and most of them are in there as local party puppets trying to get a foothold into higher politics. Council elections have been a debarcle with 'stooge candidates' putting their names up to get preferences and it is getting worse. Our three tiers of government are ridiculous. With strong allegiances to their own States, people may never give up State governments to see a national government in Canberra, but what's the betting most people wouldn't give a damn about their local councils being scrapped. I wouldn't, they spend more time bickering between themselves, and in recent years it has been a fight with local developers who have put themselves on the council to fight VCAT decisions about property development which they have an interest in.

Save us money, get rid of them.
