Financial Advisor/Planner jobs

Hi, I'm a financial advisor in the UK and planning on moving to Oz by next year. We are applying for a 176 visa as my OH is a chef. We are ideally looking to move to the gold coast and my OH is confident he can find a job there. I was just wondering what the job situation is like over there and if there is any financial advisors on here who could give me some advise. I understand that I will also need to redo my qualifications once over there is that correct? Will I need to live nearer to Brisbane to find work. I know it's not the best job to be in at the moment and jobs are rare in the UK so it it the same over there too? Hopefully it will have picked up abit by the time i move!

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Becki

Due to the current situation financial planners are a bit on the nose in my opinion and therefore I believe there will be a lot of them looking for work. They have been found to selling product rather than giving advice and people are not happy with the trailing funds.

Any actual financial planner will get a job because they are in demand everyone wants an independent financial planner with no affiliation to product.

We researched many and found only one in Melbourne.

really just 1! Thanks for that, I figured that there would be lots looking for work at the minute, abit like over here. I guess I'm just abit worried that once I get over there I may struggle to find employment and with me earning the higher income in our household, getting a job for when I get there is essential. I'm in the wrong job at the moment I think! :-) I here where your coming from with the 'advice' though - it does seem to be more about selling the product rather than advising what's most suitable for the customer in times like these which is not good.

Hi Becki,

I am a financial advisor in Ireland and we are applying for NSW SS.....fingers crossed!!!

I think the job situation all over is bad, certainly is in Dublin. You can fo the Diploma in Financial PLanning while still overseas as it can be done by distance learning. There are a number of providers that offer it.

I intend to apply for it in the next couple of months and hopefully have it completed by this time next year, when we would be going to Oz.

I would imagine, even with the certification/FS Diploma someone from overseas would initially be working as more of a product sellers, maybe for one of the banks/insurance companies. It would be difficult to be in a position to geive impartial advice on all aspects of the markets, not knowing all of the funds/product options from each of the many companies.

I worked in Sydney for a year about 13 years ago (loved it!) and worked in Superannuation. I specialise in retirement planning here so I may seek a superannuation product advisor/planner in OZ. An advantage of working in this area in Oz is the size of the industry, as superannuation is compulsory.

What stage of visa process are you at? It is nice to hear of another financial planner on this formum.

Regards

Karl

Hi Karl,

Thanks for the reply. I've not done too much research into the Diploma yet. Have you had a look into the costs, number of exams etc ? My thoughts were to also get it done for before we can get over there so I can get straight into a job - if there is any :-)

I don't mind starting off in a bank to get to know the products. It is actually my OH who is getting sponsored he is just finishing an AQFIII and just about to go through TRA at the moment and then can apply for SS. I've only been i the job for a year and half so I don't have the experience to my able to go for SS myself. What did you need to have to get your skills assessment?

Thanks for the info!

Hey there,

I'm a planner in Sydney. Hope this information is still of use!

For the Diploma of Financial Services (Planning) just google RG146 - that is the Govt code for the minimum training that you should have. You can either do it online, or face to face. The face to face version can take as little as a couple of weeks plus an assignment.

For demand for planners in Australia, at the moment demand is still there for good planners, but the ones finding jobs typically already have contacts and client bases that they can use in their new firm. Additionally, there is a move away from commissions, so be a real adviser rather than a sales person is going to help.

I'm working at a fee only, independently owned non commission based group, and I'm finding that there is solid demand for what we do, however things are a little bit slower than they were a couple of years ago.

Things are picking up, so depending on when you come out, things may be better. Additionally, there are also jobs going in the paraplanning area for people that really know how to put together strategies and write reports, which allow the planners to spend more time with their clients.

Best of luck!

Hi there, I am currently doing my FPC exams and work as a client relationship manager for a major finance group in the uk, im 26 and also have a degree in marketing. How likely do you think it would be for me to obtain sponsorship in oz my ex bf is currently in adelaide and has applied for his permanent visa and i am keen to join him just don't know how to go about doing it. I've already been out on a WHV last yr so that is not an option for me.

It would be great if an employer would be willing to sponsor me and train me up in the financial planning area when i have finished my exams.

Wondering if anyone could help or had any ideas of how i can get to oz on a more permanent basis. Thanks

ncybernut,

Your FPC will not mean anything over there unfortunately, you'll need to redo the exams once your over there or before you go to get the Oz equivalent. The only employee's who might take you on and pay for them is possibly banks which is what some of the big 4 do in the UK, so the only way to find out is by contacting the banks over there possibly. I'm currently looking to redo my qualifications before i get over there - luckily OH can get the visa but there doesn't seem to be that many jobs about so think it may be tough to get a company to take us on and pay for the exams too.

Good luck x

Hi, I really like this forum. It is a relevant issue for all Financial Advisors relocating from the UK to Oz. I'm in exactly that situation. Arrived in Brisbane a month ago and started the job search. Found out that my CeFA certificate is of no use here which I thought was a little harsh but well, what can you do.

So far I know that I need to do the Financial Diploma via RG146 which I intend to do but first I want to be absolutely sure that there is nothing else that can be done. I've heard that there are some other options that I will investigate next week. If I find anything out I will let you know.

For now I've learnt that it isnt as easy to get a job (even as a Parraplanner or Assistant to Financial Planner) as I thought it would be. The RG146 is required even for an assistant's role. It is just after Xmas though so hopefully it is only temporary.

Good luck to everyone.

K

Hi,

I am also a financial planner moving to Sydney. I am going next yr and will have my UK diploma by then.

I have found that I will need my RG146 to be able to advise and I reckon I will need at least an Australian diploma to get a job. It is good to see I should be able to study from the UK and I understand that I should get some recognition for my Diploma but it still means more study.

Look for references on the web to RPL or recognition of prior learning for your existing qualifications

I have contacted a few financial companies by email but I am waiting for a response. I will be going to Sydney on a reccie in November so will try and suss out the job situation then. Think I may have to go to bancassurance to get some Oz experience though.

Hope this helps Jon and ask me any questions you want but I may know less than you!!

And if anyone is working as a financial out there any help/info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Theo

The candidate for enrolling for CFPCM Certification is required to be SSC or Class 10 pass, but he/she needs to be HSC or Class 10+2 pass for the award of CFPCM Certification subject to fulfilling experience criteria. Financial Planning is one of the fastest-growing professions across the world. This profession is rated as Gold Standard by Wall Street Journal. The opportunities are aplenty with Banks, Financial Planning Outfits, Wealth Managers, Life Insurers, and Accounting Firms, Stock brokers seeking professionals with such expertise and skill sets.
