Guest Gollywobbler
Hi Clubby As Karen says, yes you can. DIAC are not interested in who pays as long as somebody does. However the credit card companies treat it as a purchase of goods so they can sometimes sting people for it. You can use a Bank draft instead if you wish and send it with the application. You could also get a draft from someone like HIFX if you prefer, which is sometimes the cheapest way to do it. Best wishes Gill PS: There is no such thing as a daft question, hon. clubby67
You say there is no such thing as a daft question ...... but what or who is HIFX and how to do I get it. Guest Gollywobbler
Hi Wilma HIFX are currency dealers I think: Foreign Exchange, Foreign Currency & International Money Transfer Specialists | HiFX plc They are very reliable and have an excellent reputation. Ozforex are similar. I am sure there are loads of others but those are the only two names I know and most Brits seem to use HIFX (Brits who post on the forums, anyway.) I will try to get someone who has done it recently to explain how it works. It probably doesn't matter much for the $1,420. However judging when to buy Oz dollars can make a substantial difference to what the 2nd instalments cost in the end. Best wishes Gill
sandch
We've used HiFX on 3 occasions to move money (max £7,000 at one time) from sterling to dollars. I'm not sure they do drafts; we transfer from our UK account in sterling to HiFX, they then move the money at an agreed rate to our AU$ account in Australia. You need to set up an account with HiFX first; then when you want to transfer you agree a rate (by phone or with their new online service), and you then transfer the funds to them by an agreed date. On receipt they send the funds on in the currency you've agreed. We did have one unexplained 3-day delay once, but generally the service has been reliable. They don't charge fees, but we know that in reality these are real costs which are built into the rate you get. If you compare withTranzfers at the same point in time for example, you normally find the latter more favourable; however you can't fix the rate with Transzfers until you've sent them the money; by which time the rate may have moved against you. We've not used any other services apart from these two, and I plan to check the safeguards for security of funds placed with HiFX before I move any large sums, as I've not yet investigated that aspect. Cheers Steve
