Hoping to move to Adelaide....!

Hi all, am finding this PIO really interesting and very useful! We (hubby, 5 year old and twin 15 month old girls) are just starting the process of trying to move to Adelaide and it feels so slow! Have only just submitted our pre-assessment form to an agency so we really are at the beginning but should have enough points to go. Agency say that it should take about 12 months so hopefully this time-ish next year I won't be looking out on a foot of snow!

Welcome!!

I've lived in Adelaide over 8 years and love - but please make your own mind up - it just ticks all our required boxes!

It's been a bit hot here recently with 44c but cooling a little now.

Why not have a look at our sister site.......... PomsInAdelaide

Thanks guys. I have looked at your other website and find it very encouraging that everyone sounds very friendly and keen to get to know one another. No knowing a soul is my main worry (besides the obvious ones like hubby getting a job!!)

Hi

We are also looking to go to Adelaide next year, we are a bit further on than you are my Oh has already had his skills assessed and we have applied for state sponsorship which is due back anytime. If you need to chat or information let me know or send me a PM if you like.

Hi Lynne

Great to hear from you. We have only just submitted our pre-assessment form to an agent so we've got a long way to go yet. Have you any idea roughly when you think you might be able to move? I have hundreds of questions but am thinking I should wait until we are a bit further along in the process before I start researching them - feeling impatient already!

Hi Sue

Great to hear from you. Have you had a look about doing it yourself instead of going through an agent. We are hoping to go on holiday to Adelaide in the summer. But we don't know when we will actually move, still have to confince my husband that it is the right thing to do. Will let you know how we are getting on. If you need any help with anything or information let me know.

Hi

Yes we did consider doing it ourselves but just don't feel we have the time. We have 15 months old twins who sap all our energy and brains! It is expensive using an agent but I just know that if we try and do it ouselves we'll end up making some stupid mistake on a form or something! We were hoping to go to Adelaide next Christmas for a recce but it would cost about £5000 for 5 of us and as the agent said it should take about a year to get everything in order, we will just make one big move. We have been before and have friends and family out there so we aren't going completely blind... not that I don't feel like a nervous wreck at the thought! Sue

Hi Sue

We are doing it ourselves but it has been hard work. I am hoping to move out next year if my OH is 100% we are starting to get all the info for the visa together at the moment ready for when the state sponsorship comes back, it is due any day now, will let you know how we get on.

Going on the school run now, speak with you later.

Greetings from Adelaide!

Hope it all goes smoothly! Just curious, what aspect is OH unsure of?? Be aware that Adelaide is a very quiet place so I couldnt stress enough how important it is for poms in adelaide to reach out to each other. Best advice I can offer is make the most of the homeland whilst you can and when you get over here, throw yourself right into everything; clubs, playgroups and gyms etc from the very start!!

Hi all,

At the risk of sounding mean (:wideeyed:)

.....I'd just like to say that I don't agree with the ' poms in Adelaide ..reach out to each other'. I think it's nice that they are here, and I'm sure they are eager as to help you settle in / share their experiences / find new friends etc but I feel that Delboy's next bit of advice was the best - to 'throw yourself right into everything'.

IMHO to really assimilate, it helps if you can find Australian friends as well as expats....I don't care what nationality anyone is, but I do think it is unheathy to come to a different country and just meet up with people from your 'old' country.

Do I sound like an old grump? I'm actually quite friendly.....

:wubclub: LC

PS. I think there are relatively few people who move out here knowing anyone....but it's funny how quickly this becomes home. Isn't Godalming a pretty small place? We came from Cheam, then Tonbridge, so weren't too far from you. Adelaide is very different, but wonderful and I'm sure you'll love it here!

Hi,

I am just hoping we make friends easily wherever they are from! I am worried about feeling isolated so will be doing my best to 'get out there' and meet people especially as I won't be working but looking after 2 little ones. Godalming is a small place I suppose but very near Guildford for shopping etc. I just can't imagine it really... all I know is that if I have to put up with the weather here any longer I will do myself in!!

Thanks for your suggestions and no, you don't sound like an old grump!

Youre on this website so you must feel some assimilation with other poms. Yes you sound like an old grump. If anyone suggested that new people should get straight into playgroups, social clubs, are you saying they shouldnt????? Should they stay home and play records??? Bottom line is.... that most poms come here with the best intentions and yet end up hanging out with other poms so yes youre wrong and good on you!! Spose you thinkyoure really positive or what????

Dearie me, Delboy!!:shocked:Calm down! Perhaps if you'd read what I had written instead of what you thought I'd written? I actually agreed with you and the throwing yourself into life here....I just hesitantly added that whilst it's nice to meet up with expats, it needs some balance. How can you really learn what it is be an Australian if you only spend time with poms? It really is different here, from the language to the values to the customs.

I guess it does seem strange that I still read this site and occasionally post. I think it's because a: I get the occasional pm's so have to come on to pick them up and b: I'm nosy but eager to help if I can! Or perhaps I'm not being honest with myself and there's more to it than that! Who knows?! (Or cares really!) I don't feel like a pom anymore - loved the UK but this is my home now, my passport is blue and we're lucky enough to have a good life here.

Adelaide is considered quiet by the other states, but also known as the Festival State so go figure! We have lots of things going on through the year, pubs, clubs, theatres, music festivals, the Clipsal etc etc but we also have quieter pleasures such as the beach, bush etc within easy travelling distance for most Adelaideans. I think if you have an open mind and don't try to compare, you'll enjoy the magic that is Adelaide. I know that some people compare things here with similar stuff in the UK and find them lacking, but if you can peel back the cynicism and enjoy everything for what it is/means to south Australians, you'll enjoy it a lot more. That might not make sense...but it might when you get here!

I don't suppose Delboy will understand what I mean, and that's ok. I checked this this morning (and I should be making the kids' breakfast  now) because I was a bit concerned I'd written something that could be contentious. I don't mean to be argumentative, it's just my opinion and as such is worth no more and no less than anyone elses.

HELP ME TYKE!!!

I doubt you'll take it from me but the whole state is like a giant retirement village. Might be an exaggeration but if you dont wanna hear the truth then dont pose a question!!! Youll probably love it Yay!!

Errrrr.

It is more ofg a family orientated place. In the city centre there are plenty of bars/night clubs.IF ya want that sort of thing.

A lot of the suburbs do not have a great density of pubs - my suburb does not have a pub in it.I still manage to drink a damn sight more than I did in the Y - UK.

We do a lot of socialising at each other's houses/days out/picnics/beach meets.

Then there's fishing of course...........Whole new world is that.Spent yesterday afternoon /early evening terrified 35k's out with my Aussie fishing buddies - I can laugh now.

Loads to do but a lot of it is self made or self sought - not much comes knocking on yer doorstep.

Del's only a young un' yet so has a different view on things - mind you Del ,don't you live near Glenelg?that's got nightlife!

We do have an older population here, yes it's quieter, yes some aspects are 20 years behing - suit me and a lot of others though:smile:

Dear Tyke,

It was lovely of you to come to my aid there....and unusually kind.:swoon:

That said......venerable! Venerable!!! I know you know that whilst the word means 'deserving to be respected (lovely) and revered (possibly a bit OTT )' it also has the underlying connotation of AGE!!! And it's YOU that's the old one!* Pah!

Much lurve,

LC

*And that's why I call you old BTW!

Thank you for that Delboy...but no, it doesn't make me feel any better to know your computer crashed and you lost your music cos it's horrible when that happens; I hope you get it all back.

:) LC
