Hello pomsinoz!!!!! Ok I posted this in the welcome forum but I'll post it here too!!

We're Nicole and Jamie - Twentysomethings moving to Perth in June 2009!!!

Wanted to say hello to everyone here - looks like a really lively site and I'm hoping to get stuck into contributing in these forums....

A bit about us then ................

We have graduated, are currently working in Barcelona, Spain... Im (Nicole) a Junior Human Resources Consultant and my partner Jamie is Semi- Professional Field Hockey Player and both fanatical about photography hehehe.......

We're looking now somewhere to settle and build our future and all that.... we have travelled the East Coast of Oz and thought it was a beautiful country with great people. We're looking towards Perth / (or Melbourne which is also where my partner wants to consider also) as a great place for my job in HR and for Jamie's hockey career, the ever so friendly people and the lifestyle!!!

As this is a WA forum il ask about Perth - So I'm just wondering is Perth a good place for mid twenties with no children??? Are the people friendly and is it easy enough to meet people???

Ahhhhhh Scary stuff but I hope you can all help ...... Put down your positive and Negative comments ........ Pure Honesty :winkxmas:

Come say HI!!!!!! :notworthy:

Hi,

Sorry cant help you with Perth but wanted to welcome you to PIO. Its a wealth of information, I dont no if I would be in a straight jacket by now if it werent for these guys. lol.

Im sure someone will be along soon with some information for you. From what I have read, there are a lot of people who have or are migrating to Perth so you'll get their personal opinions in no time.

Good Luck with your plans.

I1ll ask tou a question how do you like your tea , bbecause my cup of tea and your cup of tea might be totally different taste irrrespective of ages . Sorry for fence sitting but you should noy be puttin your plans i other peoples tastes as we are all different

Hiya

We're married with 2 kids, and Perth looks like it would suit us down to the ground. Though as we have both travelled a bit as well sometimes we wonder if it will be enough for us. But I truly believe that as a family it will be great.

People I know who have travelled alot around Oz can't see the point of going there because as single people there are more 'happening' places, I've been quoted Melbourne alot and of course Sydney.

So as Yorkshire Pom has put it in his slightly squiffy way depends what your cup of tea is - family life-yeah single life-maybe not ( he only has 2 drinks a day and that's wombats piss apparently!!!)

Yorkshire Pom and 'The Ozcans' - Thank you for your reply - I value your contributions ......

I'm worried that we might find it not as 'happening' as 'the ozcans' put it ;-). We do want to make friends with people of all ages of course ..... but also people to go out and socialise with especially as we have more free time as other couples who have children and I'm hoping there's enough to do to occupy ourselves at the Weekends.

I particulary don't want to live somewhere which is mega busy or TOO BIG which is why I'm swaying more towards Perth than Sydney or Melbourne (p.s I went to Sydney and it didn't go down too well with me)

I want city life but peaceful, chilled and beach life!!!!! SURELY I'M NOT ASKING FOR TOO MUCH' hahaha

Hi Wispa and a big welcome to you both. As others have said depends what you're after. Perth is supposed to be better for families than young singles and couples but I reckon I would have loved it in my 20's with no kids (must have been a boring fart, lol) We are in our early 30s with kids and it sounds close to perfection as far as I'm concerned. If you're after a buzzing social scene maybe not for you? I really don't know as I've never lived in a big city and that kind of life doesn't really appeal. Give me sleepy and scenic anyday! Good luck on your decision x

Iv heard Perth doesn't have culture .... say like Melbourne for example is this true??? Also for those of you who are there, how have the locals been? Happy to help and talk to you?

Perth is smaller than other cities in Oz and thats what attracts me ..... I enjoyed my time in Cairns (Just looking for something a bit more populated) plus my partner can choose from both Melbourne and Perth for 'good' field hockey!

Thanks all for your contributions!!! WardsToOz .... I can't wait to get there!!!!

I am late twenties and found Perth very boring, great for families who like entertaining at home and doing barbies... I lived in Northbridge and there is a lot of trouble with binge drinking crime and drugs…along with freemantle they are the best for nightlife clubbing etc but along with that it attracts lots of idiots…bottom line and only my opinion I would avoid Perth if you like nightlife and quality clubbing etc if you are a quiet couple and prefer coco and an early night, go for it...LOL

earlswood - where do you live now? Yes def like quality clubbing but also like a chille dout life and no busy city!!!! Where would you recommend in Oz?

I looked at Freemantle ..... do the idiots really cause such a problem or is it like anywhere where people drink and act stupid (Major problem in the UK)

Thank you for your honest opinion!!!

Lived Northbridge for over 2 years before coming home a few months back..and yes the weekends are like the cities back home with drunks and anti-social crap.....just do what you do in the UK and avoid the trouble spots.. weekdays are dead in Perth and almost everything shuts early including most restaurants.

Everyone is different but after living in London before I came to oz made Perth boring for me but you might like it as I say everyone likes different scenes.

Beaches are nice but I was never one for lying about on the beach.

Best clubs are the “gay bars” to be honest and as long you are not shocked easily you can have a good time at weekends.

Good luck whatever you do.

Hi Wispa23, and welcome.

We are heading to Sydney early next year but we wanted to be sure Perth didn't have something to offer us too so we went on a recci last December to check it out. Thankfully we did as it's definitely not the place for us at this time in our lives (me 33 OH 40, no kids). We like to be near city life but not too much all the time - just like to have the option and Perth just wasn't big enough. We felt like we did all there was to do in Perth in one day (including seeing Fremantle)! But maybe it was becuase it rained we felt more negative about the place than otherwise. We had 5 days there and to be honest it was too long for staying in central Perth/Fremantle & Cottesloe. But on the plus side it's only a boat ride out to Rottnest Island which we loved as we could go off cycling to deserted beautiful beaches. (Although very quiet there too - but we liked this). Another plus is that the people there seemed very friendly.

We probably won't ever go back there although never say never and i know if we had more time to spend there last year there was plenty more to see a long drive out - ie to Margaret River, Albany Coast etc and places North of Perth too.

I think you could find quiet in/around Sydney if you wanted to. There seem to be lots of lovely suburbs around there that would give you that lifestyle if you didn't want to be in the thick of city life.

Good luck with your decision.

Hey cookiecrew!!!!

Thank you for your advice!!! I visited Sydney and it wasn't to either of our liking, I'm off out there in June next year to look at Perth and Melbourne, so hopefully we will know which one we want!!

Good luck in Sydney..... I did like Bondi beach though, slept in a wicked camper every night we were there and woke up next to the beach each morning ... Priceless!!!!

Hi Wispa23,

Welcome to PIO!

I'm a mid-20's Perth girl, born and bred and whilst my view pay perhaps be slightly biased on the positives of Perth, I didn't want you to only have the negatives from some other 20 something posters.

Perth has got plenty of nightlife, but can be chilled too and I think you would probably really like it if you didn't think Sydney was your scene. It also has LOADS of "culture" however sometimes people just don't know where to look. We have quite a good art scene eg fantastic Arts festival in Feb, great local theatre/ballet/music as well as managing to secure most of the big acts that come to Oz also. I'm not saying it beats Melbourne in the arts scene, it certainly doesn't, but if thats what you want in terms of culture, rest assured there is plenty here.

The comment made about restaurants closing early is rubbish, they are open to normal hours most days of the week. But obviously as Perth is not a huge city some don't open on a Monday or Tuesday, but most do. Oh and when we say Perth isn't big WA still has around 2 million people, so you won't have any trouble making friends etc. I do agree with Earlswood though in terms of Northbridge and the fact that it can be a trouble spot. It is where all the nightclubs are and although I've probably outgrown the clubbing scene now, I worked in northbridge when I was younger and spent many a friday and saturday night clubbing and not once, ever, did I feel unsafe or was ever threatened etc. But I never put myself in a risky position either, people drink, they get drunk and cause mischief all over the world. Northbridge is no worse than any other cities clubbing nightspot. :wideyedxmas:

Great places to go out for dinner and a drink include Freo, Subiaco, Mt Lawley, Leederville, West Perth.... I could go on. The bonus of Perth over Melbs (in MHO) is the AMAZING beaches, great atmosphere and close proximity to the south west of WA, which is great for a weekend away and a spot of wine tasting, surfing, drinking, bush walking or whatever takes you fancy. Oh and there is always Rotto too! Don't get me wrong though, I LOVE melbourne and take every opportunity I can to go over and visit friends and the shopping? TO DIE FOR! Definitely Melbs over Perth for shopping! But I prefer Perth to live, and thats just me.

I think you'll be wise to do a reccie visit and see which place you like better. Both have their pluses and both have their minuses. Enjoy your trip and good luck!

Good post bexta but Being brought up in a place is IMO slightly different, what is good clubs and nightlife to you might seem rubbish to someone from the UK, and I am giving my opinions to people from the UK moving to Perth...I know what young people have over here and I am just warning them that compared to the Cities in the UK that Perth is boring on the whole...have you ever been to the UK?
