Hi all, i have a general job inquiry i hope someone maybe able to help with.

Me & the missus are hoping to relocate to Geraldton , we're coming on a 176 visa, I'm a bricklayer so hopefully work will not be to much of a issue ? my missus is a Rehabillitation Assistant working for a private care home ,specialising in care of clients with brain injuries or mental heath problems. She has worked in this position for 3 years and has gained a NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care.

Basically is it likely she could obtain employment in this field or a closely related job ,& are her qualifications relavant or would she have to re-train.

Any info would be greatly appriecated. cheers Shaun p

Hello shaun p

I've been helping on of the members on here with the very same question, though Wic specialises in Aged Care and is looking to move to the Northern Territory. The NT, the northern half of WA and the nothern half of QLD are absolutely desperate for Childcare Workers, Aged Care Workers and Disability Support Workers. So much so that they are on the official Occupations Shortage List for the NT.

The occupation is here:

6313-17

      Aged or Disabled Person Carer

ecblank.gif

      Home Support Worker

Provides general household assistance, emotional support, care and companionship for aged or disabled people in their homes.

Skill Level:

The entry requirement for this occupation is an AQF Certificate II or higher qualification or at least 1 years relevant experience.

Tasks Include:

  • accompanies aged or disabled people during daily activities

  • assists clients to move about

  • prepares or presents food

  • arranges social activities

  • performs housekeeping tasks

  • assists in personal hygiene and dressing

  • may do shopping and run errands

  • may live in with the person

All the job-ads I have seen have said that the AQF II qualification is desirable but not essential.

ACTIV are big in this field in WA:

Activ

Activ - About Activ

They have an office in Geraldton.

They are advertising for someone in Albany this week but they were looking for someone for Geraldton last week:

Activ - Careers

There are other providers as well, such as Silver Chain which is also very active in WA and also has a base in Geraldton.

Contact Us - Silverchain

My sister works for Silver Chain in Perth. She chooses to look after the elderly in their own homes but some of them are disabled as well.

I doubt very much that your wife will have any trouble at all in finding work that suits her in Geraldton.

Best wishes

Gill

Hi Gill, what is the AQF certificate? I work with many very experienced nursing auxiliaries who are unaware that their skills are in demand. Most of them have NVQ 3 in care-do you know if this is acceptable?

Thanks Fiona x

Hi Fiona

AQF means Australian Qualifications Framework. More or less the same as what we call National Vocational Qualifications. They are very similar concepts. They have AQF Certificates I, II & III much as we have NVQ 1,2 & 3.

Some of the possible courses are here:

Correspondence and Online Courses Listing • Cengage Education

Let us say that one of your ladies has NVQ3 in Aged Care but she decides to do the AQF III in it as well. She might well be able to get quite a lot of credits based on her NVQ 3 which would mean she would not necessarily have to study every single module of the AQF III.

However, if she wishes to migrate to Australia then it is a whole different issue because she does not actually need any formal qualifications in order to migrate to Oz as an Aged Care Worker. The ASCO Code states that a year's experience will suffice instead of a formal qualification and ASCO only mentions AQF II anyway.

The Northern Territory Occupations Shortage list is here:

http://www.det.nt.gov.au/employment/workforce_nt/docs/nt_occupation_shortage_list.pdf

Look towards the bottom right of Page 2. That list calls the occupation "Disability Support Worker" but no matter because a glance at the relevant ASCO Code entry for 6313-17 reveals that it encompasses Aged Care Worker as well.

Which is fine if the Aged Care Worker is willing to commit to living and working in the Northern Territory for around 5 years:

Employer Sponsored Skilled

First the ACW has to find a willing employer-sponsor in the Northern Territory. Then she has to live and work in the NT, for this or another approved NT-based employer-sponsor for not less than 2 years on a Regional 457 visa.

After 2 years on the Regional 457 the employer can sponsor her for the RSMS visa which would give the Aged Care Worker Permanent Residency in Oz. She would have to remain in the NT for a further 2 years, working full time for the employer who sponsored her for the RSMS visa.

But after that the Aged Care Worker can move to Central Sydney if she wants to, and she can do whatever she likes when she gets there. What happens with most Brits though is that when push comes to shove they will not move to Outback Australia. The insist on clustering in or very close to the State Capitals, exactly where the State's population density is at its highest and therefore there is no shortage of locals who could do Aged Care Work instead. In these high density areas there is no justification for bringing migrant workers to Oz.

There are 2.1 million people in West Australia. 1.4 million of them are packed into the SW corner of the State. It is very unusual to come across a Brit such as Shaun, willing to go to Geraldton, let alone convice a Brit to move even further from Perth.

On the other side of the coin, there are people from dozens of other countries who would snap up these Regional jobs and the visas to go with them. However Aged Care in their own countries is not always on a par with the norms in the UK and Oz. Also, because the others are not native English speakers they are required to sit the IELTS in order to be eligible for 457 visas. Frequently they cannot score the required level in the IELTS.

So the Nothern Territory and the North of WA and QLD respectively all end up caught in the middle. The ones who could get there easily won't go there. The ones who would give anything to get there can't do so because of the IELTS. This is known as Brilliant Problem Management By The Bureaucracy, I fear!

Cheers

Thanks Gill. If I couldn't get to Perth I would cetainly consider a move to regional Oz for my long term goal..I will pass this info onto my interested colleagues. One of the OT assitants at work was also quizzing me the other day, I told her to have a look on the DIAC website, only problem is she is over 45. Thanks again for the info

Hi Fiona

As long as your friend at work is not pushing 55, she would almost certainly be in with a chance in the Regional areas I have mentioned. I spotted the NT list and wondered about Wic and her husband from here because he is a mobile plant operator, which is another occupation in huge demand in Regional Oz because of all the infrastructure projects that are happening.

Rather than risk raising false hope I phoned the NT State Migration people myself to make sure I hadn't got completely the wrong end of the stick about how the whole thing works. The NT lady confirmed that I had not misunderstood it and she was the one who told me about equal shortages of the same skills in Regional WA and QLD too. I didn't ask about the southern States or the Southern half of WA so I don't know what the story is with those areas.

Since this conversation I have spent HOURS trawling the web for information about the NT and the North of WA. The first thing is that they are VASTLY different from each other. Inland in the NT, everyone swims in the rockholes - natural freshwater pools at the foot of waterfalls. We used to do that in a small rockhole in Malaysia but the ones in Oz are immense. Then I was surfing the web round Port Hedland in WA. The commercial port is like any other town which depends on a commercial port. But there is THE most beautiful white, pristine, sandy beach without a soul on it. One ends up feeling torn between the beauty of the gorges and the beauty of the beach!

Cheers
