IT Jobs in Brisbane - Advice wanted!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've seen discussions about professions such as bricklaying or carpentry but does anyone have any experience of getting an IT job in or around Brisbane?

My family and I will be moving to Oz once visa is approved, hopefully to Redcliffe.

Thanks :GEEK:

What do you do in the UK? My husband works in IT, but there are so many different areas! We moved from Perth to Brisbane for the job. There seems to be a few jobs in his field at the moment. seek.com.au are pretty good and most employers in Oz will advertise there.

If you have anything more specific I can ask Fraser and see if he's anymore help!

Hi My OH is a developer - Lotus Notes/Domino type stuff and some Java, we have seen loads of jobs on seek.com and other sites and contacted agencies but they don't seem to want to know until you have a visa through - this is a long wait as we are applying for a 176 perm visa..

Hi Taryn,

My area is Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence. There seem to be a steady flow of jobs on seek.com.au which is positive but would love to hear a local view.

Thanks

My husband has a Management Consultancy in the UK but uses SAP and we're struggling to get the Visa alone, never mind the work!

Can anyone clarify the situation with regards to MODL? There's so much conflicting advice. We've been told with NO IT degree it's 9 years of high level SAP experience. His degree is in English and he'll have an MBA by the time we go too.

The Migration Agents don't seem to know what they're talking about.

HELP...

Hi, Have you read the information on the Australian Computer Society website. Here is the link:

https://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?action=show&conID=skillassessment

Before any IT professional can work in oz and apply for their visa (in most cases), you have to have your skills assessed by the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

My oh, does not have a degree in IT but has 15 years experience in his IT field. So he has complete a very long and time consuming application to the ACS. If do have an IT degree its a shorter application.

Any good migration agent will tell you this. We used Go Matilda who has a specialist consultant who is an ex IT professional himself. We would not have passed the ACS Rpl without him.

There is another IT migration agent who is highly regarded on here and thats Ptlabs consulting.

The difference between the 2 agents initially, is that Go Matilda give you initial free advice but Ptlabs who have to pay I think $50.

On Ptlabs website it tells you more about MODL. You will need 4 years current experience in the modl profession to gain modl status.

Here are there links for you:

Good Luck

Hi,

I arrived in Brisbane on the 11th September this year, we came through on my skills in IT, I have no degree but approx 7 years experience. There is work in IT but not sure about the field your mentioning.

I was interviewed over the telephone at 7.30am UK time and was informed I had been offered the position while I was in Perth visiting friends.

Its all about setting your stall out in the right way. I put my CV on various websites and hed emails delivered to me about my area of expertise, and every time I just applied for the position just to get my name out there.

The skill assessment is just a case of your fella sending off his certificates, anything related to work where he may have attended a course, any reading material he can relate to (online links etc) and good references. If you can supply all of these things then I am sure your agent will get you both in.

I have just finished my 2nd week of work and TBH we are loving it although we have just spent a fortune on household furniture and white goods because we're starting again effectively.

You say your husband is into Java, there should be some work in it for him as a developer in Brisbane, but again he should just register with jobsites.

good examples are:

mycareer.com.au, monster.com.au, seekit.com.au, jobserve.com.au, smartjobs.com.au, recruit.net, gurus.com.au and many more really. Tell your fella to set up email searches on a daily basis to see what work is out here being advertised.

I have just done a search on Java, Lotus & Domino using Gurus.com website and it listed 8 pages of jobs so I think you might be alright.

Good luck

Tony

I sort of work in IT (computer games). IT is one of the skill shortages in QLD, so you might even be able to get a skills based permanent visa.

BTW we lived in redcliffe for 3 months when we first arrived, lovely to live by the sea but a big commute to brisbane city center (I work in fortitude valley)

You should probably check out the blog, stuff about redcliffe, cost of living, cost of emigration etc.

Hi all,

Thanks for your posts so far.

I don't have a degree so I needed 8 years experience to complete my ACS assessment which came back positive in August. I applied for a MODL skill and used PT Labs - Peter Chaim is the chap and he is very good.

Dizzy2005 - how long was the commute? Where did you end up moving to?

We would ideally like to live by the beach, hence why we like Redcliffe area but if the commute is too long it may put us off. I may get a motorbike though?

Anyone know if there are any plans for a direct train line into Brisbane from Redcliffe?

Cheers

Theres no train to the City from Redcliffe. Closest station is Sandgate, which is around 20 mins drive over a busy bridge.

I got the bus from scarborough to sandgate (nearest station) that was 30 mins

Then the train from sandgate to brunswick (stop before the city) train is quite slow 14 stops! takes 30+ mins then a 10 minute walk to work from station.

I also sometimes got a lift from somone who drove from redcliffe, it took about an hour, the roads are very congested especially the M1 going south into brisbane.

We ended up moving to chelmer, 20 mins by train to brunswick street.

Like I say more details on the blog: Emigrating to Australia

Scroll to the bottom theres stuff about redcliffe and th commute.

We either wanted to be by the beach or have a pool and ended up with a pool, which now its warming up I consider essentially, it means the house isnt as nice as we could have got without the pool, but a worthwhile sacrifice.

Mike.

Hi first time I've posted on this forum so welcome to new poms in Brisbane/Queensland. I work in IT, I was lucky I married a Brisbane girl. met here in Luton of all places...anyhow I worked here in 2002 and returned in 2006. I was lucky enough for the company I contracted for offered me a job if I came back.

Anyhow back on track, Lotus/Domino guys are hard to find here, we run it and we are paying a lot for consultants. But we want to move on Notes to Outlook and a big drive is the lack of skills for Notes/Domino in the market. So I wouldn't see a problem getting work at all.

No way would I commute from Redcliffe to the CBD everyday, that would be a killer. I'm lucky I live South Brisbane, about 20 min bus ride into the CBD. We bought at the right time, it is proving expensive around the CBD

Hi Spides,

What about if I got a motorbike to commute?!

Would that make it easier and quicker?

Thanks

I have been in IT over here for 11 years now after 10 in the UK. One thing you will notice in Queensland are salaries are lower than Sydney and Melbourne. When going for government jobs they want degrees over experience...for AS400 work in Brisbane I was told 7 years experience is behind a degree with no experience.....!

Expect to be at the bottom again as some employers want you to prove yourself, unless you are sponsored (I was for 1st stint here but not for permanent residency).

I have managed to claw back some job prospects in the last 2 years and now work on SharePoint development so alls heading in the right direction.

Hi all, Sorry to jump on the end of this thread, but it seems related to my question as well!

My family is hoping to emigrate soon. My wife has Australian Citizenship, so I will be applying for a Spouse visa.

My field of work is also Business Intelligence and we are looking seriously at Brisbane / QLD, due to family connections in that region.

The question is around the necessity / advantageousness (!) of ACS certification. In UK I do IT contract work and have been looking at similar roles advertised on Jobserve and Seek. None of them mention ACS as a pre-requisite. I know that if I was applying for a skills-based visa, I would have to go the ACS route, but would really value some insight as to whether this is something real employers ask for or care about, once you're actually applying for a post, with a valid visa?

Hi Readingsteve,

Nice to hear of someone else in what is such a specialist field!

I'm not aware of any ACS experience requirement for jobs. I did it so I could apply for a 175 Visa under the MODL skill for Data Warehousing.

I'm keen to find out more about BI/DW jobs in Brisbane but I can't seem to find anyone with local experience of the job market though... Melbourne and Sydney have more jobs but I don't want to live there!!

Cheers

Jonny

I think to a certain extent the larger corporations are all still based in Sydney and Melbourne, that leaves smaller offices here in Brisbane that have little IT development teams, mostly just support if that. I have not come a cross much BI work lately in Brisbane and the latest credit crunch can not be good for development prospects in the next 2 years!

In the years I have been here no one has asked about the ACS although state government would be the ones if any...have you guys tried the Queensland government job site, its at www.jobs.qld.gov.au another is for all of Oz and is at jobsjobsjobs.com.au/government
