Guest The Pom Queen
Hi It really does depend on the disability. In Melbourne they prefer to keep the child in mainstream school and provide the extra help required. Here are a couple of websites that may be of interest: SPELD Home Page Department of Education and Early Childhood Development - Education
Quoll
Victoria was in the vanguard of inclusive education and closed many of its special schools about 15 years ago. AFAIK those that remain are either sensory impairment specific (vision/hearing) or for children with high needs due to multiple disabilities or are early childhood intensive programs. There is one reasonably close PPSS: and you could contact them and ask what their eligibility for enrolment would be. Australia in general doesnt have the same sort of special schools that may be found in UK - usually ours are for children with very high support needs. The bulk of our special needs children are catered for either in units within mainstream schools or on integration support programs within mainstream classes. The least restrictive environment is usually the premise. In order to access disability programs anywhere (and Victoria in particular) the criteria are quite stringent - I cant find a link at the moment but from memory they look to support the bottom 2% of the population and focus on intellectual, physical & sensory disabilities and pervasive developmental disorders (autism etc). Generally there arent special schools for children with learning difficulties without an underlying intellectual or other disability.
