Quoll
Education in Australia is a bit of a dogs breakfast because each state has their own Act and that means things like starting ages, finishing ages, assessments and even the year spread of primary/high is different depending on which state you happen to land in. This is the best potted summary for how it all "fits" together Education in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dont think of it as "repeating" or "going back" if you find that your kids are in year levels with the same name as they may have done in UK - nothing "repeating" about it, it is just that they are going to a new system with kids of the same age as themselves - heck, the year naming isnt even consistent from state to state (although it is getting better!). They may be ahead in some areas but there will be other stuff they havent done. No SATS, no Ofsted, no GCSEs, no A levels - they are UK initiatives and Aus has its own system. There is universal assessment now (I think it came in last year) at years 3, 5, 7 and 9 but nothing like the stress of SATS. No league tables - you will find it hard to get any objective ranking of what is a "good" school. The parent grapevine is as good a way as any of finding out what a particular school is like but there is a tendency for the "good" schools to only take kids in their priority enrolment area because every man and his dog want to go there. Second language learning is mandatory (yeah, right) and so schools will at least pay lip service to a second language on the curriculum - in PS it is usually a few key phrases and an appreciation of the culture of the country. It gets serious in HS. Homework - probably not too much, that depends on the school. Teachers dont actually like having to give homework but parents always want more of it and so it varies hugely. Good luck with it!!!
