Problem Medical?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has been in the same situation as me and came out with a positive result, On Tuesday I went for my medical, A situation arose although I did not think this would be a problem. 27 years ago I had an operation to remove two tumours, these were found to be benign, i had another two left in although in 1992 whilst having a scan for another reason i asked for them to check if anything was still there and the results were that they had disapeared.

The Dr has asked for me to obtain the letter which was sent from the hospital to my practice saying that the tumours were benign when I was five and then in the letter from my Dr he wants re-assurances that there will be no re-occurance of the illness.

I'm not so sure he can do this as no one can predict what will happen.

how strict or the examiners on the medicals and will I be refused, i am never ill and this has never affected me since I was five years old.

Hope someone can put my mind at rest!!

thanks

Hi, I will tell you about my experience as this may help. 2yrs ago I had part of my tongue removed as I had pre cancerous cells. I had my medical wednesday. I took a letter from my consultant stating what treatment I have had and also that as i don't drink or smoke I am at little risk of problem happening again. My consultant was happy to do this letter. The doctor at the medical said that diac look at all factors when deciding your fate. For example if you have an occupation that is highly in demand this goes a long way in your favour. Like you I was worried about failing medical but in a previous post Gollywobbler has told me "How can a doctor who has never met you disagree with your own consultant who is a specialist in your condition and knows my full medical history". On reflection I think these are wise words so I have tried not to worry. If you PM me your email address when our medicals are processed at Sydney I will email you with the outcome.

Hi Degs

Your description of your medical history suggests that you have an ultra-cautious Panel Doctor, to be honest.

By my calculations, you are now 32, born in 1976? (OK - I'm cheating! Excel is doing the work for me!)

In 1981, aged 5, you had two benign tumours removed with another two left in situ.

In 1992, aged 16, the two remaining tumours were found to have vanished.

Half a lifetime ago, if I am right about your age now. Is this Panel Doctor r-e-a-l?!

I would expect your GP to be suitably scathing about the PD's demand, frankly. Ditto the Medical Officer of the Commonwealth, out in Sydney.

The truth about meds processing is that it can only be described as "a mess" according to the Australian Auditor-General in 2007:

http://www.anao.gov.au/uploads/documents/2006-07_Audit_Report_37.pdf

There has been a very recent case that raised Cain about the chaotic state of DIAC's mis-management of meds processing. It caused such a stink at the upper echelons of the Health Section in Canberra that your description leads me to believe that some of the Panel Doctors are now running scared and are going far too far in panicky assumptions about what the MOC will and will not accept by way of input from the PDs.

The MOC Boss Doctor remains sane, however! He would be as irritated as your own GP will be by this idiotic demand for a piece of ancient history about you, my friend.

There is no way on earth that your description would cause you to fail the meds. Be assured about that. I reckon that a letter from your GP will suffice, to be honest. Expect to pay around £30 for that, give it to the Panel Doctor and tell him/her to send it to Sydney as is. Threaten to complain to Australia House unless your instructions are obeyed, I suggest.

The relevant Court case is Robinson, which is here:

Robinson v Minister for Immigration and Multiculturaland Indigenous Affairs (with Addendum dated 18 November 2005) [2005] FCA 1626 (10 November 2005)

Best wishes

Gill

Fab post again gollywobbler. The medical system/requirements amaze me as does the variation between how panel doctors carry out the medical. The variation not only happens between different surgerys but between doctors in the same one as I have read a post on here describing examination by a doctor at the same surgery as i attended and my experience was completely different.
