Earlswood ???? - I actually think you would like it here! boring it most definitely is not!!

For us I would say it's great especially given that we came from a very rural part of the UK so a complete change. I love the beaches, so many things to do without the need to spend loads of money (excl the theme parks!). Plenty of work for OH and close enough to Brisbane for more things to do (Son actually travels there daily for study). Public transport seems fine to us and cheap! Weather fantastic.

What I don't like is the graffiti, the driving on the M1 :arghh: and the 'packed in' feeling of some of the suburbs.

We avoid Surfers Paradise, absolutely no need to go there. Love the southern end - Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta much more. I do really think there is something and somewhere here for everybody.

I actually like the graffiti...something to look at that is intresting, and it is the only culture that Oz has really got as some of that graffeti is from the seventies.

Not Banksie quality....but more of it:jiggy:

Only visited briefly but reminded me of Miami, high rise blocks on the beach.

Good way to spoil a perfect beach, not my cup of tea!

When we arrived and first went to the Gold Coast it was much more built up than i imagined and i soon realised i didnt want to live slap bang in it !! as Lyn says there are some lovely suburbs dotted around, especially south Gold Coast and also hinterland gold coastb,as with any tourist hotspot Surfers area is busy, built up and chaotic, still excellent for a day out though! i much prefer the gold coast over the city and sunny coast.Hope this helps a bit

I agree about the high rises especially around Surfers to Broadbeach - as you approach them it reminds us of the video game Grand Theft Auto! It does improve though the further south you go which is why we prefer that end when hitting the beach. Kirra beach at Coolangatta is just stunning.

Earlswood - I too like some stylish creative graffiti but NOT the majority of what is around here, why do kids (I am presuming it's kids!?!?) have to trash things in this way?

we went on a reccie of brisbane in may, we had thought of the southern side but it just wasnt for us...... just didnt get the feel of the place.. but we LOVED the theme parks and had a ball in surfers paradise (went to the poms meet, hi folks if u r reading this xx). that night we where up the Q1 building .. its fab. loved the clubs, shops and resteraunts there too... im not into big cities etc, but we had a great time there, we didnt get to see much of anywhere else to be honest, we also wouldnt live there , but great for a day out...... and yup.... too much graffiti.. but rather surprisingly .. no litter and the parklands and beaches where very clean, imagine that in uk?????? errrr .. no.... so there u are .. a series of contradictions... but theres a place for everyone . you just have to find it... c ya .. john and marie

Well I actually like the skyline of the Gold Coast, I like to be on the beach at the top end and just look at it span around. It feels so open and bright on a summers day.

I have holidayed there and like the Broad Beach area as theres numerous cafes and restaurants, for the older people or people with young families, as Surfers is mainly for teenagers and younger people in their 20's. you are also nr the casino and nice golf clubs and marketsin Broad Beach.

I may have stood a chance staying in Qld if I could have lived there instead of Brisbane! But then again everything feels different when your on holidays, I still reckon Brisbane is a clean and beautiful city, but I dont want to live here!

Not my cup of tea I must admit. Elsewhere in Aus, the Gold Coast is a bit of a joke - it is the place that people jokingly say that they are going to retire to or the place that they are going to live when they win Tatts lotto - the implication being that it is a quick rich tacky place full of people waiting to die (or international tourists of course!)

Some areas are like that - glossy, posh pads, bloody great expensive cars etc but ... there are huge parts of it that are for 'normal, ordinary' folks who are none of those types! , so those people really need to take a look a little bit beyond the end of their sunnies  It appears there is a common misconception that the Gold Coast consists only of the surburbs around Surfers Paradise - that most definitely is not the case!
