Orls Ni Neill Posted September 5, 2018 Share Posted September 5, 2018 PLEASE HELP! Hello there, My name is Orlaith and I'm a fully qualified Special Needs Teacher currently based in Ireland. I'm looking to migrate to Australia on a skilled migration visa, but I'm running into difficulties getting my qualification recognised with AITSL because they do not consider Montessori qualifications. My degree was a four year full time degree covering the full primary school age range. I'm hoping to get in contact with Irish teachers based in Australia who are teaching in Special ed and were successful getting their qualifications recognised to do so. Bran Posted September 5, 2018 Share Posted September 5, 2018 Although I don’t know anything about Montessori qualifications, I would guess that there are certain elements or components to the degree that do not meet their specifications in order to deem it equivalent to an Australian qualification.If you’ve received a negative outcome, they should explain why it has been declined? I did a 3 year degree in primary education and then a Masters in special needs, and that qualified me as a special needs teacher. I was hoping that someone might know of someone that has tried and hopefully successful. Perhaps consulting a MARA agent would be beneficial before possibly wasting time and money? Can I use them as evidence of initial teacher education? No, Montessori qualifications are not recognised by AITSL as meeting the professional criterion as it is considered a specialised method of teaching. --- I would advise you do a masters. I too have a 3 year Primary Education degree... As you will know, AITSL won't accept this on its own to give me a skills assessment... Can I ask which uni you did the masters in SEN? Also - Did you come to Australia as a Primary School Teacher or Special Needs Teacher/Educator? My concern is that I do a masters in SEN but then still can't qualify for the skills assessment as I'll have 3 years Primary and 1 year SEN... She also has a degree in Montessori from Ireland, and AITSL have given her a negative skills assessment for an early childhood teacher as they don't recognise her Montessori degree. However, she then went on to get a positive skills assessment from ACECQA, as part of which they recognised her degree as equivalent to an Australian Degree in early education. This to me is a bit of a contradiction, and we are unsure if we should have another go at the AITSL? Has anyone ever heard of the AITSL ever recognising a degree in Montessori? I know on the website the say "in general we do not recognise Montessori Degrees", but maybe we have some hope with the recognition from ACECQA? Any advise or insights would be very much appreciated. Southlander Posted August 3, 2020 Share Posted August 3, 2020 Hi, unfortunately AITSL will not recognise Montessori qualifications, so would not put anymore money into it this route. There should though be a few threads of people having the same issues or can jump in saying what they had to do to gain a positive skills assessment. I have a four year BA Hons in Montessori Education which covered special ed and primary school curriculum but have just read on AITSL website that they do not accept Montessori degrees. Orls Ni Neill Posted April 14, 2021 Author Share Posted April 14, 2021 Hey there... You can absolutely teach in Australia... AITSL is only for visa purposes. You just need to get your qualification recognised when you get here, or even start the process now from home. Then you register with teaching council here and you are good to go! Visa wise, I had no luck with the visa... when I put my case forward, they said they would look at it on an individual basis. However, I was a days out from the TP days requirement... so you never know? It might be worth a try? Are you over 30 yo? Best of luck with everything and keep the chin up! Just received a negative on my BA Hons in Montessori Ed which was the only thing left to do so that I could apply for my PR. Now I am lost and have no idea what to do next. I was going to show them my acecqa letter (which I should have attached) but reading above makes me think that even that won't change their minds.
