UK customs

How strict are UK customs with dirt/liquids etc on shipped goods? Are they as particular as Aus? I can’t see anything that makes me think they are as strict but thinking about some of my tools/equipment and whether I could clean them enough.

I’m sure the shipping company will help but thought I’d pick the forum’s brains. Thanks.

We have never had a problem with UK customs, both countries are strict in theory but not so much in practise. Going both ways we have just done a basic clean. We took motorbikes into Australia and not had them looked at, it just depends who you get on the day to be honest.

Assume they are.  I recall getting  clear guidance when we shipped things back to the UK ove r 10 years ago and I doubt it is less strict now.  It didn’t seem much different.

Thanks. Wasn’t sure they would be so picky with an essentially open border with the EU. Stuff/people on the move all the time. Not sure I’ll be bothered to try and clean things then. Everything is easily replaced I suppose. Thanks for the reply. The gov.uk site just talks about weapons, porn and endangered species! ?

We didn't have any problems with anything, and I don't recall being told to clean things when we moved back.  It wasn't mentioned at all by the shipper.  I did have a look at the HMRC site to find out information about the TOR etc before we moved, and as you say it just mentions illegal goods etc.

Ok. Good to know. Thanks. Maybe I’ll try a scrub up and see how they look.

Lovely. Not just me then not finding anything about cleaning stuff! Makes me feel better. I think you are the most recent returnee amongst us so that is positive. They seem more interested in VAT!

Thanks.

I didn't have to prove the age of anything and didn't have to pay anything. I did the clearance myself and a lovely lady from the Customs department talked me through it.
