We do not need to take a sofa or any white goods, but would like to take beds, bedroom furniture, t.v's and ornamental things that can be boxed up. Any rough prices? Full 20 ft container just less than $8k and shared container would have been around $3.5k had we decided to go that route. Definitely worth getting a quote from them. Reason being we made nothing at all on the house so no cash came in, so trying to work out best way forward given we're not going to be flush at the other end and have no idea at this stage where work will be. Much appreciated Sue HI sue I got quotes from Chess, Pickfords and Crown. Chess and Pickfords were almost identical but Crown was 20% more. Depending on how much stuff you have a shared container is cheaper but takes longer. I was quoted 14 weeks and it will be 17 by the time it arrives. It then has to clear customs and that takes a week longer than a solo container. For 11 cubic meters from Sydney it was $3300 but larger shipments will be cheaper per sq meter. Insurance is extra and obviously based on the value insured., there is a minimum amount around 30K which cost me $1200 to insure. We had a full container it left on 06/03 and arrived on 05/04. It went through customs in a couple of days and straight into storage as we weren't ready for it ironically!! The costs that have been quoted do appear to be very reasonable thought. We would be looking as a shared container, but we would not be bothered too much by the time it took to reach the UK. We have a car to take too, which we brought over in a shared container also. We will be putting things together though to help with the packing. The example we always use is that when the packing company were doing their bit for us coming over they were throwing 10 wooden coat hangers in a tea chest size box and packing that up. Definitely will want to be there when it's getting packed as we may have to access the container to get boxes of clothes out before we find final destination (house / where to live). We discussed this with Paul, there is a per hour charge for them to crack open the container in UK but we will need to access it to get clothes out as we may not find home / job for some 8 to 12 weeks and won't be able to live from one suitcase of clothes with interviews and I guess changing weather. We will make sure that any items / boxes that we think we will need are packed at the end so they can be accessed if required. The insurance is going to be interesting as without reading all the fine print not all insurances are the same - whilst LP is probably cheaper there may be differences on the total loss or various aspects. Martinbjulieb Posted June 15, 2017 Share Posted June 15, 2017 Just a note to all to remember that when your container gets to the UK and you require storage your belongings do not stay in the container unless you wish to pay extortionate fees: these are the fees quoted by Brittania who are partners with Chess- First 5 days free (yay!!) Next 5 £40 per day, next 4 £50 per day, next 7 £60 per day and thereafter £90 (!) per day. The alternative is obviously a storage unit at your removers warehouse, our quoted price was a one time handling fee of £230 and then £69 per week. So obviously packing things last so that you can access them won't help!! We had to access our unit and were charged £30 for the privilege of having someone just unlock the unit for us!! Maybe if you need something out use some sort of colour code, maybe a large piece of coloured paper stuck to the box? Also worth noting is that with LP insurers your belongings remain insured until they are delivered to your actual address or for 90 days after docking, whichever is sooner. I've got quotes from Chess and JetPets with Dogtainers to follow today. The shipping for full container was (28m3) $8,200 without insurance - ouch. The 2 cats in one container through Heathrow is around $3,800 - only $100 cheaper with 2 cats in one crate. I'm sure the providers check this forum for updates / quote for comparison, lol. But fair enough. Just sorting out Emergency Travel Document through British Consulate Perth as husband's UK passport expired and he's left his run too late - just got his Aussie one renewed with priority payment - $460 ouch. So 4.5 weeks to sort out everything and garage sale all the excess stuff we're not taking and 3 of those we'll be working. Hello crazy days. @ScottieGirl @Martinbjulieb I've been quoted one time handling in / out fee GBP 247.00 Monthly Storage GBP 296.00 I don't think that covers us accessing the container to get boxes out we may need - he thought around GBP 40.00 / hr for someone to do that - thereabouts - need to firm that up. As said it would be better to get a storage unit and store your stuff in there until you can move it in with you. That way you can get your stuff when you want and not have to worry about paying someone 30 pounds for the pleasure of them opening your lock. We were lucky when we arrived in Oz as we had a garage for all our stuff to go into. We have got a location in Whittlesey (Peterborough) we can get container trucked to and perhaps Chess won't make any more deliveries (haven't asked about the unpacking costs cause they're in the price I assume). Perhaps (assume) you could get your container trucked to your holding destination - they unload it there - and then they take container away. When you know you're final destination you've got to pay a removalist to move all your big load of stuff again. Or get your container trucked to your holding destination and keep goods in container and pay storage costs on container - ouch. Then you would get container trucked to new location - which I imagine would need specialist truck and be expensive. Haven't had chance to work out the costs of removalist from one location to another - wonder if there is a generic ball park per mile rate somewhere on google to do a quick comparison. So much to do. Rainman Posted June 18, 2017 Share Posted June 18, 2017 We paid $7000 for a 20' sole use container with Chess. We were very happy with their service. Informative, unlike other moving company's we received quotes from, they mentioned the new ToR (transfer of residence) process into the UK., which is not exactly straightforward and gave us time to research what was involved (imported pets need to be included on this form). We had a huge amount of stuff and they packed in as much they could. They sent a great team to pack our stuff. We used Letton Percival for insurance though. It is definitely worth getting yor own Marine insurance and not being lazy using the shipping company to arrange it- you wil save hundreds. I used Letton Percival after reading about them on Pomsinoz. Hopefully we won't need to claim but I will report on their perfomance regarding claims as I will report on how things go when when our stuff arrives in the UK. We still have to go through our stuff again to “cull” it down and make sure that we only take what we need. Or really need. Not heard about the ToR though, that will be something that we will have to look into closely and make sure everything is sorted. So far the service seems great and we're definitely going to look into the insurance. I haven't read the fine print and not sure if the insurance both offer are like for like (total loss, etc). But at this stage we need to save where we can as we lost on our house. We're starting to cull - but the amounts we have after 17yrs in one house is crazy. Hello garage sale and gumtree - some things move quick but others not. Get some absolutely insulting offers - just like the house. But I guess if you don't try you don't get. Hopefully we won't have to fire sale as we're down to 5 weeks - probably 3 weeks until packing starts. Cats had their rabies injections on Friday and will be starting the TOR process this week, Dogtainers said they're finding its still taking month for the TOR #. Appreciate the updates. Our insurance with LP states full replacement or repair. For the couple of items that have been scratched we are opting for a cash payment. For one item that was badly scratched we are opting for replacement. We are told that once the claim is underway we will be given a part payment upfront to help replace the necessary items. Main reason being is if you do need to make a claim, LP will deal with it no fuss or dramas. A shipping company is most likely going to argue their case and pay out the least amount possible while causing you extra stress. You can read no end of stories on here of people having issues with the shipping company insurance when they have needed to make a claim.
