Thom
Hi gang. Does anyone know of a Canberra based financial advisor, one who is able to give advice on international matters. What we need is personal (i.e. retirement, savings, superannuation financial advice,) for our potential retirement back to Blighty Thanks in advance Thom
Marisawright
I doubt you'll find anyone in Canberra. You'd be better off dealing with someone like Vista http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/financial-advice-ask-vista/

Marisawright
Why would there be no financial advisors in Canberra? :err: Or did you mean nobody on here who might know one. I mean financial advisors with experience in handling both British and Australian tax. In my experience they are thin on the ground everywhere! Thom
One lives in hope though!! I mean, what with Canberra being home to every embassy from around the world, and of course the British high commission, and it being a hub for all Aussie international politics, you'd think there just may be someone here with the knowledge and skills? Marisawright
One lives in hope though!! I mean, what with Canberra being home to every embassy from around the world, and of course the British high commission, and it being a hub for all Aussie international politics, you'd think there just may be someone here with the knowledge and skills? Since very few Brits migrate to Canberra, their only potential clients would be the guys at the British High Commission - so in fact, I think you've got far less chance of finding one in Canberra than in the popular migrant cities like Perth. If you do find one, I'd be a bit worried about how much experience he had owing to the scarcity of clients! There is no such thing as understanding "international" tax, because every country has a different tax regime and different rules for dealing with overseas residents. For instance, we're not going to retire in the UK because we're going to lose too much in tax if we do - but if we were willing to live in Italy instead, the story would be different. I'm sure there are financial advisers who specialise in dealing with expats, but that's not the same - expats are people who move around the world temporarily on contract (not permanently, and their needs are different. Personally I'd rather have one with experience in dealing with people moving between the UK and Australia specifically, even if that meant dealing on the phone or via Skype. Alan Collett
Are you looking for financial planning advice, or tax advice - or both? Best regards.
Bungo
I mean financial advisors with experience in handling both British and Australian tax. In my experience they are thin on the ground everywhere! Financial advisors do not do tax. Accountants do tax but not financial advice. Financial advice and tax advice are two very very different things. An accountant could get into a lot of trouble if they tried to give financial advice. A financial advisor is not likely to know much about tax. OP seems to be looking for advice on investments and savings, in which case a financial advisor, as per the original request, seems to be what he needs. Financial advice and tax advice are two very very different things. OK, I was careless with the exact terminology but so was the OP. It's not relevant to my point. Financial advisor, tax, accountant - it doesn't matter which one you're talking about, I would not expect to find one in Canberra who has knowledge of, and substantial experience in, both British and Australian tax/pensions/investment. The OP would likely need advice on financial planning pensions AND tax.

Marisawright
Been recommended these by someone on another website; / I can't find anything on their website about handling British financial affairs OR investments for non-residents. They may be very good at giving financial advice to people resident in Australia but that's irrelevant to you. If they have given advice to people moving to the UK, they've probably gone away and done their research, and may have done a good job. But in that case, their advice is only as good as their research - and they will probably charge you for their research time! Personally I'd much rather use someone who works in that field all the time, because then it's their job to keep abreast of new tax and investment laws in both countries. Even if you leave your investments/pension in Australia, it will be affected by British tax and investment regulations. Also, once you're a non-resident, Australia will tax you differently. I do hope you don't have a SMSF!

Thom
Thanks Andy. I don't want to waste your time as we're just speculating at the moment, and our situation is quite complex. If I were to email you a brief summary, could you give us your thoughts on matters? As I say, I don't think it would be fair of me to use up your time when it may all come to nowt.
