EOI, visa applications timeline

Hi All,

We have just registered because we have made the decision to move as a family of 4 back to Aus after spending a working holiday in 2011.

Quick first question ( I am sorry if this has been covered lots of times before)...

I have been reading up on EOI for a skilled independent visa (189) and saw that if you are invited to apply you have 60 days. My question is, if you happy and are approved for a Visa, how long would we have to make the move? wondering if we need to do it now or wait a bit as we are hoping to move mid-late 2017.

Many thanks!

Simon and Sian

The 60 days is to make payment and apply for the visa once you've been invited..you'd have One year from when the medical or police check was completed. People tend to leave it until they are asked for them by the DIBP to give them as near to a full year to enter but they can be front loaded with the application as soon as you wish. But do not over run the year mark otherwise they will have to be re done

When your visa is approved, it will come with two dates shown on it. There is an initial entry date (typically 12 months from the date you completed your police/medical checks, whichever is earlier), and you must enter Australia by this date to validate the visa. You don't need to stay, simply is enough to clear through immigration. Then there is a must enter date which is 5 years from the date the visa is granted. This is when the travel rights on your visa expire, so you need to be in Australia by then or you'd need to get another visa.

Even if you've moved by the 5 year deadline, you still need another visa (typically a Resident Return Visa) in order to be able to come and go for holidays, etc. or else become a citizen. But you've got a lot of time before you need to worry about that.
