Cairns, Toowoomba or South Brisbane

Hi I live in Cairns, we moved here mid January from Sydney as my husband was working here. We love it I'm in the beaches end I'm not to sure about the south. The humidity is a bit over whelming sometimes but we are gradually getting used to it. I don't know anything about the schools as my boys are older. The thing with cairns you have to think of is you have everything on your doorstep the barrier reef, the rain forest it's truly stunning. I agree with Pom queen this is probably the most beautiful place in world.

As your husband already has work that's good as work here is hard to find, my son and I have applied for probably over 200 jobs in the last 8 weeks luckily we both now have a job but they are quite hard to get.

i think it would be an excellent place to bring up children. I've never felt more safe anywhere in the world and we've done a lot of travelling.

We got a quote for contents insurance for $680 which was a shock as was only $105 in Sydney. I know this is due to the cyclone problems but I have in my experience had much worse weather in Sydney.

Anyway I know quite a lot about the northern end of cairns if you need any info. I've been up and down for the last year before we did the mive.

Thank you Debbs, the beaches area sounds lovely. We would need to live within 20-30 mins of the public hospital for work. Would the beaches fit that?

Bit of a pathetic question but what's the bug/croc/snake situation? Are there a lot of mossies? Guessing there aren't crocs all over but is it fairly straightforward to avoid them?

The contents cost seems high but guessing buildings insurance will be eye watering!

Do you feel isolated in cairns?

Really appreciate the help from everyone on this thread.

30 minutes would probably get you out to Palm Cove. The only thing you have to watch out for in wet season and then it's usually only a one off is that the main road in can go under water just after Smithfield near the Go Carts, you can take the road round Brinsmead so there is another way in but on a day like that allow 2 hours. Thankfully it has only gone under 4 times in all the years we lived there.

Yes there are crocs and yes there are snakes. I have yet to see a croc in the wild up here. You sometimes have one patrolling the beaches but once spotted they usually close the beach until he has moved on. It hasn't stopped me swimming in the water. Although I won't go in there in stinger season November to May. A lot of the beaches have stinger nets and some are patrolled by life guards. You can go swimming at the waterfalls at crystal cascades or the lakes up on the tablelands.

Snakes I have seen but that's because we had a rainforest as a back garden and had chickens. You can get 15ft pythons around but it's rare to see them and those aren't venomous. Mozzies, there are a few around but not plagues. I had more problems when I lived in Melbourne. Bugs, yes everywhere in Oz as bugs, just get a moretin barrier spray and you will be fine.

You can never feel isolated in Cairns, I've just flown down to Sydney today it's an hour and half to Brissy and 3 to Sydney, flights are cheap, so you can always have a weekend away in the big smoke if needed.

Thanks for replying. Any particular reasons for cairns over south Brisbane?

Probably because they are miles apart in that Cairns just as the wow factor, it's paradise, people come from all over the world to see your town and its beauty

Now that sounds good!

We'll wait and see what comes of job hunting for me and take it from there, but it does sound as if non of the three would be an awful choice, so we're feeling pretty positive.

thank you

Hi, pretty much as Pom Queen says. We live maybe 20 -25 minutes to the hospital the job I just got is across the road it takes me that long on a bus rather than parking in the city. Never seen any snakes but I'm sure they are around more towards the rainforest. I have seen a croc on the side of road but it was last year in wet season up near Catalan wetlands he was spotted again just the other night. It's very rare to see them and just as you would anywhere you don't venture into places that have the warning signs. The mossies have always liked me so I just spray myself if I'm going to sit out or go out in the evening I don't find them a problem. As Pom queen says spray round the house with mortein in Sydney I was forever fighting with huge huntsman spiders not had any spiders or creeps since we've been here.

I don't feel isolated here in cairns it's easy to get about and you don't have the craziness of the big cities. I'm going back to Sydney for a weekend break and cost me $190 return with carry on bag the airlines do some great deals here even Bali for $170 at certain times of the year.

We are now heading towards the end of wet season and I have to admit we've not had anything this year like you would expect although the humidity is pretty much up there still. Once the humidity has dropped its like a beautiful summers day blue skies, temperatures from what I know don't really drop below 17 in the day.

We have found our electric bill has doubled but now I'm being savvy with the aircon there's only one electric company so your kind of stuck with it.

they are developing all over cairns there are some really good properties to buy especially in the northern beach areas. Also plenty of places to rent they are nearly all on real estate if you want a look put in post codes QLD 4878 and 4879 that's the areas we have lived here.

anyway anything else you need help with or any more info I'm always around.

Thanks very much Debbs, really helpful and reassuring. Certainly tempting as I get up ready to scrape the ice off the car and stand on my sons footie sidelines in thermals, still freezing!

We have friends live in Cairns moved from Adelaide and love it ( English emigrants in the first place )

As newly arrived immigrants we went straight to Adelaide and settled ,love the place but having been to Cairns ,Port Douglass Mooloolaba etc we absolutely loved it

i think if we ever moved in Oz then Mooloolaba would be the place for me , the humidity never really bothered us but there again after the heat of Adelaide I think we enjoyed it !

30 degrees in the evening - no problem wondering if you'll have to cancel bbq plans then!

Thanks for the offer of photos, will get back to you once we're a bit clearer about actual jobs.

Planning the move is such a strange combination of excitement and terror at times. Made so much harder by wondering if it's the right thing for the children.

I've been to Adelaide and thought it beautiful. Unfortunately only a very brief visit as our holiday was cut short by bad news from home. Would love to visit again. Lovely to hear than other poms can manage the humidity and heat in Cairns. Sounding better by the minute.

We are from Sunderland NE if we can manage the humidity I am sure any one can

Must admit the SA heat at times is a bit too hot I always say it's a clean heat but we survived Hubby was a bricklayer used to start at 5 am home after lunch to avoid the midday heat

Its ts terifying but worth it in the end, leaving family and friends is the hardest but you get there in the end. We were excited then me and my youngest 16 at the the time were terrified felt physically sick on the way over but it's worked out great. Oz is just an amazing country I really wish we had the opportunity to have brought our boys up here. I just don't have the same concerns as I did in the UK. I just find cairns peaceful yes there is crime of course ...not come across it but it's truly paradise

Hi we live in Cairns, been here 18 months we live Kewarra Beach which is the northern beaches. We have 2 boys 15 & 14 and they have settled in great and play football. We also are from the North East of England (Hartlepool) and came strait to Cairns (we hate the cold so love love love the heat) If you have got aircon and a pool your fine. The mozzies love me and my kid`s, hubby has never been bit. I take vitamin B still get bit but not as much. The locals call it Paradise and I agree, I miss my friends and family back home so much but so glad we made the move. Feel free to pm me if you want all the best for your move

Thanks, sounds like you've settled brilliantly, can only hope we manage to cope as well as you! I react badly to mozzie bites which is the only reason I'm particularly bothered about how many there are. Hopefully I'd just get used to it and will definitely try the vitamin b advice. Glad your boys manage football out there, sounds like kids acclimatise easier perhaps.

Thanks for the advice and may well pm you if we end up having an offer in cairns.

You'll get used to the mozzies. Somehow your body seems to acclimatise to them after a year or 2 and you barely notice the bites. Its dengue fever you need to worry about, not the itching ;)

I am currently living in Toowoomba moved from Gold Coast. I do prefer living on the gold coast, but I guess Toowoomba is not so bad. Actually, the weather is much batter than the gold coast. Also, one of my co-worker who is used to live in Brisbane and has 2 kids likes living in Toowoomba due to its children's education aspect. But I know someone who has left Toowoomba, because she couldn't find a decent job. For me, I would live in a northern part of the gold coast and travel to work in Logan since it's quite close.

Hope it helps! :)

Thanks Kat. Is the weather cooler or just less rain? Wondering how it's better.

What is it about the Gold Coast you prefer if you don't mind me asking?

One thing we've wondered is whether there'll be enough for the kids to do once they're teenagers and beyond. Sounds brilliant for young kids just unsure once they're older. What do you think?

Toowoomba is definitely cooler than Gold coast and much less humid. Some nights on the gold coast is just unbearable without aircon', but at night in Toowoomba is usually cool because the elevation of Toowoomba is like 600-700m.

Personally, I like the gold coast more because it's near the ocean. haha :) and it's a bigger and newer city than Toowoomba. I feel like there's nothing to do in here... I don't know why. Also, people on the coast tend to be more easy-going and kinder. I have an impression that Toowoomba people don't like immigrants.

I am early 20's and I don't like Toowoomba... haha.. Toowoomba is more likely a city for who retired for me (and actually it is lol I put the article's link just down below). it could be the answer of the last question from me! :)

Hope you find a good place to stay. Good luck! :)
