marie
Hi, My husband Is waiting on his 189 skills visa to be granted. How long do we need to live in Australia before aplying for citezenship ? If we end up coming back to UK, Is it easy enough to extend visa (I think I read it's valid for 5years) Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Marisawright
You need to have been resident in Australia for 4 years before you can apply for citizenship. During those 4 years you are allowed to be out of the country for up to a year in total - but you must have been living in Australia for the last 12 months before you apply. Once the visa is granted you will have a certain length of time within which you must validate your visa (i.e. you must enter Australia). Once you're in Australia and living there, your Permanent Resident visa doesn't expire - but if you want to leave Australia, even for a holiday, you must apply for a Resident Return Visa so you'll be allowed back into the country. If you never become a citizen then you'll have to keep on going through that process, which is why most people apply for citizenship as soon as they're eligible - saves a lot of hassle!
