RMN and Health Visitor/child and family health..registration???

Hi everyone,

I am a diploma MH nurse with a degree in specialist practice (health visiting). After a few (!) meltdowns I have clarified that I can seek registration with the degree.

My question is this; as an RMN - am I eligible to apply for child and family health nurse posts?? On job adverts it simply specifies RN?

Will I be restricted to just mental health jobs despite my HV qualification?

I have tried emailing various government health depts but haven't had any replies and AHPRA just reply with an automated generic email.

Is there anyone on here who work as child and family health nurse but are RMN's?

I am hoping to come over on PR to NSW - if there is anyone on here with any ideas of who I could contact for further guidance?

Any help greatly appreciated

That's good news, can I ask who you managed to seek clarification from as I am in a similar position and worrying about my ANMAC and AHPRA applications.

I would assume you wouldn't be restricted to MH jobs but that's only a guess. Not that there seems to be many of any jobs currently (or mAybe that's just in perth)

Unfortunately not clarification from AHPRA. However, there are a few ladies on the FB page for nurses seeking Ahpra and they've very recently gained reg with SCPHN degree so I'm hoping this will be the case for me.

Ive been scrutinizing the Ahpra website.... yet again .... And it does appear that the degree criteria is still being 'waived' for mh diploma nurses subject to supervision. However, I'm really keen to stay in a health visitor type role.

It's so difficult trying to get answers.... I keep thinking I've got my head round it, then I read something and start in a panic mode.

Last week it was about criterion 8, this week it's jobs... Or lack of them....

Yeah that's the impression I'm getting to but still high anxieties until the powers that be confirm it.

Would you go back to MH as a starting point if need be just to get started?? I ideAlly want a teaching post but being realistic I guess I will have to start at the bottom again

Hopefully by the time we eventually get out there the job situation may look a bit more positive, fingers crossed eh. Let me know if you mAnage to get any positive answers/outcome.

I am an RMN and as my training was RMN only I am restricted to working in the MH field, however, if you've done further training then you might be considered duel registered. Which part of the register are you on in the UK?

Hi I am RGN dip he with HV degree, I am working as a child health nurse in Perth. The criteria here is registered nurse ( no branch specified) and post grad certificate in child health ( HV degree is more than adequate) perhaps make contact with named persons on job adverts such as this one for clarity. Just a word about your mental health role, you may want to pursue that as an alternative, health visiting role here ( not sure what it's like in NSW) is very limited and the role may not be as you expected. I personally find it very boring. Good luck

I will do, louloubelle. I hope you get answers soon as well. I would go back to MH if necessary - in my current job, I have a lead role in perinatal MH but in terms of bread and butter MH nursing, I feel quite de-skilled these days and tbh I got out of it for a reason! However, if its a route to OZ then it would be worth it :)

Thank you for this, thats really helpful - I will try contacting named contacts for further info. Can I ask why you find your role boring - I'm guessing there is a lot less autonomy?

I plan to keep my options open, but I love my HV role ... just not the UK lol.

yes, loss of autonomy has been difficult, some practice out of date, no multi agency working, cp frustrating, and quite frankly alarming, the list is endless, I just do primary visit, and scheduled developmental assessments and that's about it. Might suit some people though... Not me I'm afraid

That's really useful info - thank you. My interest is in CP so I may be in for a challenge ;) Im hoping if I could start in this role - it would be a door opener elsewhere...
