Pilbara Poms

Recommended Posts

The beaut Pilbara. Lived there in the 70's, building the Tom Price-Paraburdoo and Robe River railroads, and had a few visits in the 60's while working for the Main Roads. As @The Pom Queen says, such a lovely area.

A bit hot at times...:wink:I remember a little story of an old an old bloke meeting the Devil; he says to Beelzebub, "You can't scare me with Hell, mate, I lived in Marble Bar".

All the best,

Cheers, Bobj.

I drove the Karratha-Tom Price Road a couple of weeks ago... love that drive, some amazing scenery that rail line goes through over The Ranges.

Definitely gets a bit cosy up here in the summer! Its winter now though so a bit chilly (28 degs) with a nice crisp wind :)

Have you been up here before then? Just travelling or living?

I wish, I am waiting until I am fit enough and then will get @Bobj to extend our next road trip lol. Mind you we need another 4x4 as this one we have i wouldnt fancy taking on a long trip.

Nice! I see you are in Cairns so that would be a nice drive over the top and down through the Kimberleys and Broome :) 100 Series Landcruisers seem to be the tank of choice... they just keep going and are apparently easy to maintain with a little mechanical knowledge :)

Hahaha... clearly that ^^^ is why Im not the one responsible for cars in our household! Although I do see a fair few Landys around here and the 100 series sell really quickly. But as long as its got 4 wheels and aircon I leave the rest to my other half :)

Living in the Kimberleys must have been incredible? Is it as amazing as people say? I have never been but my expectations are pretty high!

A difficult question to answer...

It depends entirely on one's attitude to life and tolerance of heat, flies, dust, going without the 'corner store'. That and the ability to make one's own enjoyment in a hostile and rugged environment..

And that, young lady, would just about exclude 95% of poms.

Btw, have been going back there for many years...Just to try and get rid of the Kimberley dust, you know.

Yes, please! @The Pom Queen

And remember...Lower the centre of gravity of the 4wd.

Cheers, Bobj.

But then there wouldn't be enough room for the little ones rocks.

He mentioned he had received a lovely message today from his best friend and was begging to go off in September, If it didn't need a 4x4 me and the little one could maybe tag along although it depends how Rob goes with managing at home on his own with stairs etc whilst we go for a drive.

If you blokes do come, tell the No.3 son that he must specialise in taking the rocks home.

Incidentally, might look for a uranium deposit I found in 1968...It is about 8 km south of what used to be Dunham Stn, the no.2, or 3 original homestead for the Durack family when they made that epic cattle drive in 1882.

I FiFo to Dampier, and very almost moved there recently. I'd love to take my family for a trip up through the Pilbara and the Kimberley, but we need a bit more cash before we take on an adventure like that.

A very nice town, indeed and could very easily live there.

Helped build the on shore facilities for the North West Gas Project.

Cheers, Bobj.

I was in Dampier for almost four years, loved it, the heat was no problem to me. I was a Monday to Friday worker so I spent the weekends exploring, would take a tent and stay out most Saturday nights. Often I'd be two or three hundred kilometres from anywhere, I'd walk over to a small hill and round the other side and often there was a pile of empty tinnies. I did enjoy my time up there, might call in for a look if I'm in the area again.

Can associate with that. Actually found an abandoned Valiant car out from Hall's Creek, once...
