How did you find your sponsor?

Hi Tickled Pink,

I've had a chat with somebody from DIAC and they said the same thing "Once PR is granted on a 186, it cannot be cancelled or revoked. The applicant is only under a moral obligation to remain with the employer for a minimum 2 year period."

I was not able to ask the same person where I could find such a statement on the DIAC website.

Do you know where I can find the statement, or something similar to the effect that neither the employer nor the DIAC can cancel or revoke PR if I decide to leave the company before the 2 year period.

It's just that I would like to have something official, in writing, from an official government website or such that I can use if / when the case arises that I need to move on to bigger and better employment opportunities, instead of being exploited.

Thanks.

Hey everyone,

I am keen to know how you guys find your sponsors???I have tried so hard to look for one but havenot find a correct one, except for those lucrative agents charging ridiculous price for finding a sponsor.

Please help me out...for God's sake....

Some people are sponsored by their existing employer to move to the Australian office, some people are not sponsored at all. It is only a small proportion that can find an unrelated sponsor whilst they are still sitting in the UK.

Have you thought about skilled migration? It is a lot more straight forward, providing you are in one of the occupations on the skilled occupations list that is. You have mentioned a few different things, is there one which you would consider to be your main occupation?

As Bungo suggested, I migrated with my employer - had a similar role in Canada and they had a vacancy in Australia. The same applies to most of the employees we've hired on a 457 visa and since transitioned to 186 visas.

Unless you have some very specialised skills that are likely to be difficult to find in Australia, finding a sponsor from overseas is going to be incredibly difficult. For every job I advertise, I get more than enough applications from local candidates so I'd only consider someone from overseas if they had relevant experience unique to our particular industry. Otherwise I'd rather hire locally when the person can start in 4 weeks.

If you are eligible, applying for skilled migration is a much better option.

thanks for sharing. Yeah I did realise it is so hard to find sponsors outside the australia when many local candidates are available. I'm now considering taking a short course within the skilled migration list. But I am a bit concerned the occupation may not exist any more upon my graduation...Anyone has a good suggestion for course selection??which one seems to be the most stable occupation that would remain in the list for a long long period.

In addition to what you've already been advised, it's important that you realise that employers are only allowed to sponsor people who have acceptable qualifications and experience in an occupation on the CSOL. Until you determine exactly what CSOL occupation you would qualify under, you won't even know where to look for potential sponsors. When you've narrowed the choices to a single occupation, do a great CV and start contacting potential sponsors directly. Your chances of finding sponsorship from overseas are low but with the scatter-gun approach, they're non-existent. Start with the CSOL:

I think "short" courses that leave you eligible for skilled migration have gone the way of the dodo bird. Otherwise Australia would be flooded with people in that occupation. You need to review the qualifications and experience you do have to see if they fit any eligible occupation. If there's a gap you can fill in there, that'd be a better focus for your attention.

Thanks for the comment. I selected Sales Representative as my occupation when I applied for 485 three years ago. The occupation is under the current CSOL. But I was very regretted for not having tried harder to seek a full-time position for sponsorship back then...Now I want to go back to uni again and select a course that is under direct Skill Occupation List, so that I can sponsor myself without other help upon my graduation. Here comes the frustrating question that what is the safest course to study. Which courses are predicted to remain in the skill migration list for the next few years??

i would rather advise you to make your mind in skilled independent 189 category as no sponsor is required.

i wasted 1.5 years looking for a sponsor and after some tiring search i was able to find few of them but they were charging huge amounts and i did not wanted to be their cash milking cows like the ones on student visas.

so i tried shifting my profession. hope it helps

No occupations are guaranteed to stay on the SOL. We have a huge oversupply of Secondary Teachers in most areas, large numbers of Engineers who can't find work, an over supply of IT people who don't have years of experience in a few specialities, more nurses and doctors graduating every year, poor employment prospects in many trades etc etc. You should probably steer clear of the flagged occupations but beyond that, who knows? Anything that is removed from the SOL will almost certainly stay on the CSOL so there would still be a chance of a sponsored visa but make sure that whatever course you do leads to an occupation that you really want to work in even if it isn't in Australia.
