Hi Kim

How have you found the move to Brissie compared to the move from the UK to Adelaide? We seem to be following you round...

Hey it seems like it doesnt it:biggrin: In short we originally moved first to NZ, stayed for approx 2.5 yrs, hubby then was poached to work temporarily in SA but that turned into a permanent situation so I followed him 6 mths later. We moved around quite a bit living beach/rural/city then beach again, mainly due to my hubby's work. Finally in May of this year work ran out completely so (and this is the interesting bit) we packed up house (into container) dogs in crate and tent in tow and spent almost a week travelling here, used most of our savings paying up front rent to get into a house, and just last week my husband found a job.... good stuff as the funds were fast running out... yep you could say we take risks, the secret is always look on the bright side:biglaugh:

Hey have to admit tho, was begining to get a little worried. Anyway all good now, was up that way today for bit of a walk, Mooloolahbah..... did I spell that right? Whereabouts in Adelaide did you live and what adventures brought you up this way?

I moved with my youngest daughter (then 14) from the UK having just completed my PhD :goofy: at University of Essex, Colchester. Originally was provisionally offered a job with Defence in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and that got me into migration mode! The job didn't eventuate as I wasn't Canadian, so went for a job (perculiarly) in windy Wellington . They needed me out there too soon, so the job didn't go ahead. However the guy I worked next to at Essex caught the migration bug and they moved to Auckland two weeks before we set off for Adelaide.

The colleague that did my reference for the NZ job offered me a post at Flinders Uni in Adelaide , so I completed a 4-year contract there, finishing in December. Now work for an engineering firm in Adelaide. The other thing that brought us here was my daughter's opportunity to study at a specialist music school. That interest continued and she is auditioning at Queensland Con later this year, as it has a renowned vocal department and she is pretty successful here in Adelaide so wants to try taking it to the next level. I have met and will be meeting with my potential new employers when we come in August - better job, pay and environment and my current post is not what I had hoped it would be. Also lived all over the place since we have been here, bit nomadic anyway. So will be moving with dog in crate, etc. at the turn of the year, all being well and with the help of the ANZ...

Just trying to sort out shipping quote so that I can discuss moving costs with Company. How did you move your stuff? Perhaps rather than hijack the thread you could send me a PM?

Anyway, would be happy to meet up with anybody over the 6th to 8 August to say Hi, discuss bleached blondes and stilletoes (Essex style) and pick brains about Brisbane - perhaps we could arrange a Poms in Oz meet up? Free anytime on the Saturday or on the Sunday afternoon after 3ish. All non-Essexers welcome of course?

Best

Seabird.

Hi There

We used to live in Chingford but with an E4 post code, so not strictly Essex but have all the traits of good ol' Essex people.

We moved here 5 years ago now and have just opened a British shop in Coomera to cater for the many ex-pats that live here on the Gold Coast.

You can find us at:

Little Britain in the Sun, 2a Fortune Place, Fortune Street, Coomera 4209 - between the Boathouse Tavern and the new Coomera Police Station - just down the road from Dreamworld - Exit 57 Hope Island, if going North on Pacific Highway and Exit 54 Coomera, if going South.

We stock English Premier League Football kits and merchandise (Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, West Ham, Man U, Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle, Rangers, Celtic, England and more), UK chocolates (Double Decker, Yorkie, Toffee Crisp, Walnut Whip etc to name but a few), Traditional sweets (Rhubard and Custard, Kola Cubes, Bon Bons, Sherbet Lemons etc), crisps (Walkers cheese and onion, Monster Munch, Quavers, Twiglets etc) and groceries (Pot Noodle, Marmite, Picalilli, Branston, Daddies sauce, Yorkshire Pudding mix, Bisto gravy, mushy peas, curry sauce etc) and even real English (Melton Mowbray) pork pies and sausages.

Come in and have a look....it's a great place to have a chat, meet other Brits and pick up those things you miss for home.

Hope to see you there soon. :chatterbox:

Hubby and son came home at the weekend with lincolnshire pork sausages from your shop and had them with mash, should have seen their faces...........I got dolly mixtures yay!!!!!!!!Originally came from Dagenham, lived in Hornchurch before coming here. Must pop in soon.

Well finally have job offer in the bag, start on the 24 January in West End. Daughter hears today whether she was accepted to the Queensland Conservatorium, stiff competition 80 applicants for 15 places. Got to get shippers ordered and get the RAA to check car over etc. ahead of making decisions on what should stay in Adelaide to be reused or recycled, and what should come North with us.

I also met a significant other in the interim months between visiting for my 50th and returning a few months later for a job interview who lives in The Gap, so will likely end up somewhere off or along Waterworks Road. So exciting times ahead for us, and it would be great to meet up with some fellow Ex-Essex-ites to share the accent round. Got told yesterday how much of a cockney I sound, but then the guy comes from Lincolnshire. Wonder if we feel at home because everyone here in Oz says "mate" just like us Essex folk...

Have a great weekend folks, us Adelaideans get to start ours half an hour earlier in the sunny summer months. How I look forward to the humidity when we arrive, not to mention how much I won't miss the Adelaide winters Brrrrr
