Dexterdog
Hi looking for advice on using our British mobile phones. Can we take them & use an Aussie SIM card? Also - current iPad, not a contract so can we use it out there & use wi-fi. Thought of buying a laptop to take but wondering if best to wait till in oz? Husband goes out in a few weeks & I'm stuck here till April. Need to be able to keep in touch - texting, Skype etc. advice on any of the above gratefully received!! Guest
yeah can pick up sim cards in supermarkets etc. If you already have a phone I would recommend one of the below plans http://www.vaya.net.au http://www.lycamobile.com.au http://www.amaysim.com.au http://www.spintel.net.au They are cheaper than Optus/Telstra if just getting a sim and use the same network. Vaya and Spintel have 4g, if this isn't important the other 2 are good too.
Dexterdog
Great - thanks for the info. Will get husband to check those out. Just so many small things to sort eh. Can't wait to just get out there & get on with it. At least will be able to keep in touch while he forges ahead with things. Cheers x
rvaria
Just make sure your phone is unlocked, this may cost up to £20 if its not. Any laptops are definitely cheaper in UK but be careful of warranty. My sister took a Dell laptop out with her and Dell confirmed warranty is global but more recently a friend was going to buy a Asus laptop and they said warranty was European only. I think they are cheaper in Oz, I find Phone's much cheaper in Oz too. Unless both have got cheaper in the UK recently.

Just priced two similar specification Dell laptops, UK price was £579, Oz price was $1,399. Will say that electric goods were cheaper in Singapore if you are going to do a stop over there. Suzukiscottie
If the phone the OP mentions is a smart phone (android/iOS) then Skype, Viber, email, etc can run on that in wifi areas and cellular areas. The aforementioned laptop might not actually be needed.
Quoll
Reiterating - if your gizmos were purchased via a contract make sure you get them unlocked from the provider before you leave UK! Then just buy sims that suit your location (check the coverage maps!) and your pocket
mungbean
Also, check what size of SIM your phones use before you buy new ones. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subscriber_identity_module#Formats For example, iPhone 4 uses a micro-SIM but newer ones use nano-SIM which is smaller.
