Help/Recommendations - One Way Flight Insurance?

Hi - we are flying back to the UK one way at the end of this month. I booked with Singapore Airlines. I omitted to add travel insurance at the time of booking. I just tried to get a quote from the post office and they advised I wont be covered as they only insure return journeys and only have a generic cover. Who can I book one way travel insurance with? I looked on the Singapore airlines site and it looks like you had to book at the time of booking your flight? I especially want cover as I will be 6 &1/2 months pregnant when travelling back and had my first baby 2 months early!!!! I have no idea on good insurance companies in Australia. We have permanent Visa's. Help!!

Do you need to tell them that its a one way flight? Or is it that if you have to claim you have to do it from Australia?

We used STA travel insurance. Covered us for first couple if days after arrival. We've used them for many years, since student days and have no complaints. I also don't find them expensive for such trips.

Eta - Can't do one way online iirc. We nipped into our local branch.

I managed to get hold of the company website which is used by Singapore airlines, when I started putting in a fictitious booking it again only gave the return option, in addition and more of a concern is that it seemed to suggest it wouldn't cover me as pregnant???? That's actually why I want insurance...it would cost me a fortune if I needed medical support. Has anyone heard of this before??? Think I will need to go into a branch of STA for a bespoke booking?

I would normally say don't worry, it is just one flight, I didn't even consider booking one way travel insurance. (And I do normally ensure I have cover for holidays, I am not a risk taker). But as you are pregnant I can understand different matter, if all else fails, I would consider rebooking a return flight?

Well insurance doesn't normally cover pre existing conditions and pregnancy is one of those, so it doesn't seem ridiculous. I expect you need specialist help, maybe google for a broker and get them to do the legwork for you. Or to be honest, with your history, maybe you should just change your travel dates

That's what I thought Pumpkin. I've mailed AIG (Singapore Airlines Dedicated Insurance Provider) to confirm that they are not prepared to cover me. I guess I could try a UK company?

Sadly I guess you are right :o(

I can't change the date really....I will be 6 & 1/2 months when I travel...we are leaving in a little over 2 weeks time to get back for the start of the new school year in September. Notice given on rental etc. It would break my sons heart too, not to mention mine if I had to stay until after baby was born. By the time I got a baby's passport I'd be stuck here until January. At worst I'll have to cross my legs hehe.

I would try a broker in both countries, not sure which is best. Try Adrian Flux in the UK, they are a broker I have used in the past when requiring more bespoke insurance.

Try one of the travel agents, they always push insurance for their commission, but still might push you in the right direction. Also as Pumkin says google up travel insurances (one way).

You can normally only get travel insurance from the country you are normally resident in , which in this instance has to be Australia, but as always you may find exceptions.

Good luck.

What are you looking for insurance to cover? At best, you'd only get a refund of the fare paid for your flight. You wouldn't get anyone to pay for extra accommodation in Australia or to pay for a flight on another date. Medical costs are only covered by travel insurance when you are away from home, not when illness forces you to to stay at home. And given that you would be so near term at the time of your flight, I doubt you'd find anyone with a standard policy that would cover you as the risk of cancellation would be so high. You might persuade a bespoke insurer to underwrite the journey but given the risk to the insurer and the cost of setting up an arrangement, it would probably cost more than the flight anyway.

I suspect this is just a risk you'll have to bear yourself.
