Hi

myself, wife and 2 daughters aged 3&5, are moving to Sydney next month from South Wales. I've secured a job in Bankstown Airport so am looking at areas close. Chipping Norton seems nice, secure, modern and looks like a little beach near the lake, this is all observations just looking on the internet, can anyone give me any information on this area? And what would be the local schools for my daughters and are they good?

Any info appreciated, thanks.

Gavin

I don't know it, but from the map, I would prefer to put more distance between myself and Bankstown, which is not a nice area. I think I would have headed east not west.

Chipping Norton is a resedential area, and far enough from Bankstown, not to be 'contaminated'** by its malign presence! To be fair, Bankstown is THE major commercial centre for the area, with a huge Centro shopping centre, cinemas, train station and traffic hub, specialist doctors' services, including a seven day, bulk-billing, GP centre, open from 7am to 10pm 365 days a year.

Why is it 'contaminated?' Because there are lots of mainly Middle Eastern and Vietnamese immigrants, which means great food of course. I guess I am honest enough to admit I probably would not like to live there, but not because I would be frightened.

If you are working at Bankstown Airport, you might want to consider Revesby/Panania/East Hills/Padstow. (I put them in the 'wrong' order!) Padstow goes before Revesby on the Airport (Sydney) and Campbelltown line. My brother has lived in the area for 25 years, in Picnic Point to be specific, and I like the area, though I much prefer to live in the City.

You are ony talking ten - fifteen minutes drive to Bankstown Airport, and all those suburbs are nice for families, and there are plenty of facilities.

I'll send a text to my brother in a minute and ask him what Chipping Norton is like? (I'm sure there is no station there, so it might be more difficult to go anywhere without a car.)

I've sent that text to my brother. The reason I would not live at Bankstown is the same reason I don't want to live in any of the 'suburban' suburbs. I like being in the inner city and having all the facilities I use within walking distance. I was in Baulkham Hills last night, lovely area of course, but just a hassle to get there, even though it was a quick (but expensive) trip on the motorways - toll for the Bridge, for the Lane Cove Tunnel, for the M2 at least once, but that was in the evenings and it must get stuffed up in the peaks.

I think Chipping Norton is a 'nice' (but perhaps 'sterile') suburb, which of course probably makes it perfect for families. The only concern for me would be public transport, with no station. Sydney is so stuffed with traffic that if it's easier to use public transport, you should do so. I had to go to Kogarah yesterday and it's so simple, just 3 or 4 stops on the train. I could live there.

We lived in Menai for 3 1/2 years, not too far from Bankstown !

There's another area to think about, leafy, in the bush, plenty of nice homes. My only concern would be lack of public transport, especially trains. It's a quick drive to Bankstown Airport I would think, but a hassle if you have to get the bus. I don't know if there is a direct bus service?

I suppose this is an up to date assessment of transport around Bankstown Airport?

Bus

Bus services in the area of Bankstown Airport are

provided by Transit First, a private operator which

operates services in a contracted area to the NSW

Ministry of Transport. Transit First Buses currently

operate two services in close proximity to Bankstown

Airport – one servicing the southern areas of the

airport and one servicing the northern areas of the

airport as follows:

the 860 service, which operates between the

Liverpool Bus-Rail Interchange and the Bankstown

Bus-Rail Interchange. The closest bus stop to

Bankstown Airport is on Milperra Road in the

south-west corner; and

the 937 service, which operates between the

Bankstown Bus-Rail Interchange and Georges

Hall. Three bus stops occur along Marion St, near

the intersections with Birch Street, Airport Avenue

and Own Road.

In addition, the NSW Government’s Review of Bus

Services in 2003 identified Liverpool to Bankstown

as a Strategic Bus Corridor which also has potential

to provide additional service to the Bankstown

Airport site.

Chipping Norton itself is OK but it is a suburb which is completely surrounded by commercial land such as smash repairs, factories and the like.

I would suggest that you also consider Wattle Grove, Voyager Point, Holsworthy or the new Development at Moorebank. All within 15 minutes to Bankstown airport.
