Yes, and although you will have to pay if you want to change the return date later it should be cheaper than two singles. Worth a bit of research.

It is usually a bad idea because of the above - i fly a lot for work and although i often can not be certain when i am returning, i would never book singles

Highly unlikely though they may require to see proof of funds or access to funds to show you can fly out once your WHV is finished.
