With a cat, no. But dogs I understand can be a bit more tricky. you should expect that there will be a clause in your contract that they will live outside - dogs a 'generally' not seen the same as in the Uk and don't live in the household. Of course people bend these rules, but then we have seen posts on here where the person is then in hot water because the agent or landlord have found out the dog is in the house! none of this might worry you, but just to make you aware....

It can be harder as some places dont allow pets, but even if it says No Pets on the ad still ask, as i know some state 'No' but do allow them. Also try to have a pet reference to hand in and another trick used before is to offer a separate Pet Bond.

A lot will depend on where you are planning to live, the more rural the better chance to get a decent garden and dog friendly properties. In the cities few take pets. Also most states require you to register and chip dogs and can restrict the number you have.

check out the rules for where you are going, even different local councils have different rules regarding dogs.

dont limit searches on rental sites to pets allowed though you will get very few. Instead ask for each individual property, and do get to know the local rental agents if you can and introduce them to the dogs, if they can see they are well behaved it helps. Any references for the pets from previous landlords or holiday rentals are also good.

We didn't have a problem when we first got here with our dog. No stipulation in the lease about having to be outside.

My latest one was harder with three cats. Luckily we found a good landlord who even came and helped us take out a window to put a cat flap in for their outdoor cat run. :-)

A DOG "portfolio" So a folder with a photo of your dogs (shows they are not flea bitten mangy dogs ) Photos of the inside of your home (even if outside dogs) it shows "how you live" . A reference from your vet stating the dogs are "flea free" fully vacinated, and micro chipped and your council registration number (shows you are a responcible owner). If you are renting currently a reference from your rental agent, if selling a reference from your sales agent. A reference from your current neighbours to say they dogs dont bark all night, include there email so this can be checked. Photos of your gardens and if they live outside "how they live" so a photo of the kennel or mat they sleep on. Include how often the dogs are bathed and wormed, everything and anything to show they wont damage a property. Have some copies to give to the agent if asked for. All areas are different some will consider a dog some simply say NO end of subject. As already said Aus is not as much a dog lover place as they UK. We are currently renting and got the look of DOG ????? untill we offered $20 a week extra if they let us have the dog and suddenly it was not such an issue. If you get a place - always - bath the dog prior to routine inspection, make sure its living area (bed) is fresh and clean, but some nice oil on to burn to remove any dog smell.
