pinknurse83
Hello, I am a community nurse and my husband works in construction, we are going through the visa process now and hope to be moving from the UK to Queensland in September. However, does anyone have any advice on companies or places to contact prior to arriving (hopefully sunshine coast area) where we can arrange some temporary accommodation and how we will arrange a car asap. Iv heard that relocation agents are good however were trying to keep the cost down. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you Toni
calNgary
For accommodation have a look at Stayz.com or Takeabreak.com all have short term lets. You could also try googling 'Holiday Lets' as there are quite a few on the Sunny coast. Most people book them for 4 to 6 weeks to give you time to find an area then secure a rental. For a car just hire one on line for a few weeks. The companys just outside the airport are a bit cheaper, two of the ones i have personally used and know are ok are Rolo Rent a Car and East Coast Car rentals. Hope this helps a bit and lots of luck with everything Cal x

miw54
Hello Toni We have relocated back and forth a number of times. Each time we go back to Queensland we just book a month in a holiday home (We always use Goldcoast Holiday homes in Coolangatta as the girls there are really helpful) until we find something longer term. Although the rates are higher than longer term rentals, the price includes everything so no other bills. It suits us. They also do short term rentals i.e. up to 3 months. Worth giving them a look. We always just hire a car from the airport for a week or two until we buy one and usually organise it from the UK before we go. Good luck. Queensland is great. I know that both your wife and your professions are in demand. Have you been to the down under live expo? Thats really useful they have loads of info on jobs and on the website. Train 4 trade skills would be good to look at aswell for carpentry. My husband is in construction so hes looking into trade agencies etc. Were planning on sunshine coast caloundra area. Its seems close enough to brisbane but not too far and sounds lovely. Do you have visas sorted yet?

Its seems close enough to brisbane but not too far and sounds lovely. Do you have visas sorted yet? Make sure you do find jobs before you go. Caloundra/sunshine coast are too far to commute to Brisbane and it is not a good area to find work. nursing jobs are are not easy to get as Queensland health have virtually stopped recruiting and have made many redundancies so most options are in the private sector and there is a lot of competition. The Sunshine coast would give you very few options. you really need to be flexible as to where you are going to live......find a job first. Flathead
Than you flat head. Where do you suggest is good for nursing. We did look at perth but its really expensive there now so iv been told? If you want to live in Queensland then Brisbane has to be your best bet. However, there have been a lot of cutbacks in Queensland health and a lot of nursing posts have been lost. Agency work may be available but public hospitals are using agency as little as possible. Private hospitals would be your best bet.....but there are a lot of nurses looking for shifts. You may well be able to get work but better to have something to come to....there are a few Qld health jobs advertised but they tend to be for specialist areas. your husband would certainly have more opportunity in Brisbane. If you want to commute then it can be at least an hour and a half on a good day from the Sunshine coast. Brisbane has horrendous traffic problems at peak times. There are not that many hospitals on the Sunshine coast and it is an area that many people would like to live but can't find work. Don't know about other areas....other states have made some cutbacks but Queensland is the worst as far as I know. Good luck

pinknurse83
Yes Caloundra does sound amazing but basically we will go where the work is, we chose Queensland as it sounds reasonable compared to Perth and Sydney for living, however if the nursing situation is as bad as flathead said we may have to re think?? Its hard to know where you want to live till your there! However, we wouldnt go without job offers too risky!

sprug
Hi - try the shortstay network http://www.shortstaynetwork.com.au/ or http://www.wheretosleep.com.au if you want to be in the Brisbane area when you first arrive wotif.com may give you some properties closer to the sunshine coast. As cal says 4 to 6 weeks would be a good time for your temporary accommodation. My company gave me two weeks in mine and it was all a bit stressful and rush rush but we did manage to find a rental. If you want to have a hire car from the airport I have used AVIS and they seem pretty good. Some airlines have affiliates with the car hire places so it might work out cheaper to go through any that your airline is partnered up with. Relocation agents can be expensive but don't completely write them off as they may be able to get you into a property quicker saving you money on temporary accommodation - (prices and service do vary a fair bit though) Thanks Shelley

Loopylu
See my response to your other thread. Try googling about nurse redundancies in Queensland......it has been big news this year What Flathead says about Qld Health redundancies is true but things may improve in a couple of years. Qld Health is building a new hospital at Kawana Waters (Sunshine Coast) http://www.health.qld.gov.au/scuhospital/scuh-overview.asp which is due to open in 2016. I recently spent time in the Royal Children's Hospital which is on the northside and will be merged in a year or two with the Mater Children's Hospital on the Southside. Alot of the nurses I spoke to who lived northside are looking to get jobs at the new Prince Charles children's ER or the new Kawana Waters hospital to avoid relocation to the Mater. It may be possible that there will be vacancies at the Mater in a year or so. Also, you could look into the possibility of a post at Kawana Waters but this may delay your arrival in Oz...
