Two chihuahuas - UK to Brisbane

mattress

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm just looking for some general advice regarding taking two very small but fully grown chihuahuas to Australia with us.

We are looking at going in January but have only had the dogs rabies jabs done in the last week! Yes, talk about not having a clue.

So, it looks like we will have to leave the dogs behind until the beginning of April and then our nephew (who will be watching them) will take them to the airport for transportation, after having all of their jabs and treatments done by our local vet at the times prescribed. Then they will spend 30 days in quarantine in Oz prior to their clearance.

My question is, is it worth paying a specialist company to undertake the whole process or is it easy enough to conduct it yourself...with the help of your vet? Also, is there any real cost saving by doing it yourself?

Thanks

Hey Mattress

This the start of a really good thread, thanks for putting this out there.

Definitely people can do this themselves, you can get the permit and you can arrange bloods with your vets. However, the rules have just changed and pets will have to fly out around 7 months after their rabies vaccinations and 180 days after the rabies blood sample date - so i think a flight early May is going to be the key.

You cant book flights yourself, you do have to go through an agent.

Ref the other bits - it depends on how capable your nephew is and how much your vet knows.

Price it up properly - take the flight ticket and crate cost from the shipper, then add your vets costs and add the permit costs. then get an all in cost from a pet shipper and see the difference. I think it is around £200 more expensive to do it through a shipper rather than do it yourself.

I think in your case, with you over there and the dogs here - using a shipper to do as much as you can and take much of the responsibility is going to ease the stress massively.

Whatever you find out and price up will be really helpful for everyone - the forum users to see if it is worth doing yourself and for us too to check our pricing is close to what it should be.

Hope that helps

Bob

We're using PetAir for our 2 Chihuahua's to go to Oz next month. So far they have been great. We have done some things ourselves and paid Pet Air to do other things like flights and permits which saved us quite a bit. I do agree with what Bob has said with regards to getting them to do it all if you're not in the country as there's quite a bit of organising and red tape which can be stressful and can imagine it would be more so if you're not here. Good luck

Thanks guys, I'm sold. My nephew has a great deal of animal experience and is extremely reliable, while the vet is up to speed with the whole process but I think it would be wise to use a shipper to sort the rest out for us.

The vet can administer all of the required shots and tests, while my nephew can ensure they're being well looked after and transported to the airport on time.

I'll be contacting Petair today to get some quotes. The saving of £200 by doing it yourself hardly seems worth the trouble.....especially when we'll be out in Oz in January.

Many thanks again and I'll update the thread as and when I get info.

Hey everyone

I am also looking at sending my two chihuahuas from uk to Aus so any price quotes would be very helpful. My 2 guys are 7 next year, is that considered too old to transport? I know chihuahuas can live until 14 so it doesn't seem old, but vets and airlines might think differently.

I don't foresee any problem at all.

Hi Arees23

First thing to do is to make sure they have a microchip, then a rabies vaccination and then 3-4 weeks after a rabies blood sample. The rabies blood sample needs doing at least 6 months beforehand, so it is something to get started soon.

7 yrs old for a chihuahua is nothing so that is not a factor.

Off the top of my head prices will be £1400 for the flight ticket and crate, then add vet work and permits (around £800 for both dogs) plus quarantine costs (around another £800) you are looking at around £3000.

Check out this for more information and if you want an exact quote then you will need to measure the little ones and let us know.

Hi Bob, I'm in a similar situation with 2 Bichons. Just wondering if the £3k is per dog or for the two of them? I know it's a guide but might need to save a lot more if I misunderstand it!

Ive be also got a cat (who is rubbish as cats go, but the kids love her!)

Hey Leah

The £3,000 would be for both dogs rather than per dog!

2 Bichons and a cat is going to end up being between £4000-£5000 if you take into account the quarantine, flight and all the bits.

Just get the rabies work started early, please, and that will save you money on potential kennelling/cattery fees if the pets have to go after you.

Anything else let us know.

Bob

Dogs arrived a couple of weeks ago. Excellent service and worth every penny. Thanks PetAirUK!

Just a bloody shame that the highwaymen at Sydney quarantine centre are about to triple the cost of holding them for ten days.

We used Golden Arrow - can't speak highly enough of them, its not worth doing it without a professional transport company. Excellent service, no hidden surprises and they take care of all the stress. I was aware of the quarantine - that is the 'not nice' part of the process, no one can control that. If you get your timing right you have 6 weeks from memory

Hi, I have 2 small dogs, a Jack Russel and a Jack /Yorki cross, When my Jack had his initial Rabies vaccination 2008 , he had the lab work done, when I had the younger cross done last year, they only did the jab, I just assumed that was how it is now, unfortunately I found out a few weeks ago, that she needed to have her Rabies re-done and lab work, the dates of this now mean she cannot leave the country until 28th Dec, so my question is; Do airlines fly pets over this period.

I have also just read on PetairUk that the lab work needs to be less than 2 years old, my older dog had his approx 5 years ago, he has had all his Rabies boosters, My vet told me that as he had his lab work he didn't need it again. Please can anyone clarify this before I go into a mad panic : (

Hi

The rabies blood sample has to be between 6 months and 24 months before the flight date, so if it was done 5 years ago it will need redoing.

The airlines do fly over that time, but the quarantine stations dont accept pets between Christmas and New Years, so your dog would have to fly after January 02nd.

If you want to give us a call about this we can definitely advise better, but it sounds like you need to get the rabies blood sample done quicksmart - as long as the rabies vaccines are kept current

Thanks BobPetair I emailed Petairuk last night , I am slightly annoyed as my older dog could have had this done the same time as my other one,but my vet told me that as he had his lab work cert he didn't need it,will aim to get his jab today. : (
