Can I get away with declaring under $1000 worth of new stuff in Movecube?

I have one brand new item that I need to ship in my move cube, only a few weeks old, still in boxes (and really needs to be for ease of shipment). Can I own up to this one item and as its less than $1000 or not be charged import duty or GST?

I would think so. We declared one or two new Blu-ray/DVD players and never heard anything about it.

Does the $1000 without paying import duty not apply if things are shipped in the same way as if you buy things on the internet? If not, I wonder why not.

that's what im wondering I would hope they look at the whole shipment and see ok one new item, value 600 that's fine

We declared a $800 vacuum cleaner as new and it came through without a hitch. It was the ONLY new thing in there though (we diddnt try and sneak anything else in).

I understand that certain items (such as clothes) don't attract GST, so if you import them, there is not going to be any tax to pay. I've also read that as long as it is under $1000 you will not be charged. However, I would declare it as if you are one of the unlucky ones they check, you could be fined quite heavily.
