JAYZO Posted February 15, 2008 Share Posted February 15, 2008 Hi all Wev just made the decision to emigrate to Brisbane, and as im Epileptic i was wondering if anybody knew if i would have to pay for my prescriptions? At present i have a medical exemption certificate so i dont have to pay. Also can anyone reccomend a good agent that is reasonably priced ( we dont want to be ripped off) Any help would be much appreciated. Quoll Posted February 15, 2008 Share Posted February 15, 2008 You could try emailing Epilepsy Australia for the best information Epilepsy Action (Australia) - seizure information, help and services However in general, prescriptions are not free in Australia, if they are on the Pharmaceuticals Benefit Scheme then they are subsidised so the most you would pay is about $32 a script. But there is a "safety net" provision which means that when you have paid more than a certain amount for prescriptions over the year then they are free. Guest Libby1971 Posted February 16, 2008 Share Posted February 16, 2008 Well our epilepsy didn't! Epilepsy medication is not exempt from charges. You pay for it and the medication is done monthly. It isn't cheap but it is necessary. In fairness, there are almost no waiting times to see a doc of any consequence (about 1 month to 6 weeks at the longest). If you are on a low income you pay concession rates on your prescriptions but this is usually for people who are benefits and most poms can't claim them. If it were hte case your prescription might be $4.00. However we aren't that lucky. So we are paying the full whack of about $30.00 per prescription. It does mean though that we reach the limit of $1090.00 sooner I suppose and once I do, then we start paying the concession rate. This limit is done as a family. Cheers Zoe. x:unsure: Hi Zoe A lot of the brand-names are different but the compounds are usually the same or pretty similar. However, some drugs that are licenced in the UK are not licenced in Australia. Don't worry about it, though. The doctor will tweak your prescription until you and s/he are happy that whatever is prescribed works for you. People will tell you that if a drug is not on the PBS List you will have to pay an arm and a leg for it. This is not necessarily so. My mother has a condition which requires a particular type of drug. She turned out to be iolently allergic to the PBS-approved drug for the condition. Her doctor wrote to someone in Canberra and told them that (a) the treatment is essential; (b) she can't tolerate drug ABC; © she can tolerate drug XYZ and the latter would therefore have to be made available for her at PBS rates. Cheers Zoe. x:unsure: Pretty sure that Tegretol is on the PBS as I have worked with kids who have been on it at some time. I dont think you will have any trouble there. It would be good if you could bring reports from your specialist and GP - you wont get your medical records but if they could send relevant information it may smooth your way.
