lucyk
Hi Can anyone advise when and how we could apply for permanent residency after being in Aus on a 457 visa? Would we still need to satisfy the points test? Thanks
Tickled Pink
You can apply at any time. If you are sponsored by your employer you don't need to worry about points, but instead meet the criteria for the 186 or 187 visa. If you chose the independent route, 190 or 189, you would need to meet points requirement and go through expression of interest.
VERYSTORMY
In effect yes. The only thing a 457 offers is the ability to forgo the skills assessment if you have been with the same employer 2 years.

Unless your occupation is on the exempt list, in which case no need for skills assessment.
lucyk
Good to know that we could apply at any time. I thought there would have been a minimum stay on a 457 visa before we could apply. I'll have a look at the criteria for the 186 and 187 visas. Thanks
Tickled Pink
No, no minimum period. We went from 457 to PR in 10 months.
Rupert
Hi Can anyone advise when and how we could apply for permanent residency after being in Aus on a 457 visa? Would we still need to satisfy the points test? Thanks You could spend ten years on a 457 visa and it doesn't mean you can just get PR. The only relevance of a 457 visa history to a PR visa application is that it could mean you don't have to pass skills assessment in an employer sponsored application or it could help with points for a general skilled migration application.
