Passed the Citizenship Test last week, the Police check has been completed so now just waiting to be invited along to the Ceremony. Might be the big one on Australia Day in January! Hopefully, as some friends are going to that one, would be good to do the Ceremony together. :biggrin:Quite exciting!

Congrats to you!

Thanks! And if anyone has any questions about the process, fire awayl The test was multiple choice, you definitely have to have read the supporting booklet that you get when you apply. There are a few questions abt the different levels of Government which I found interesting to learn about as previously I was completely ignorant abt the Federal Police v State Police, Fed Gov v State Govt etc. And I'd never heard Queens Elizabeth II referred to at the Queen Of Australia either! Made me think of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert! (is that what that film was called?!)

Yeah, it's mostly stuff you'd know about anyway, just a few facts that you need to know to pass by 75%.

Can you please give me some information on the form 1195? Do I have to attach it with all my documents or is it OK if I take it with me when I get called for an appointment? I haven't filled it yet because I messed up. I got the Identity Declaration form (form 1195) signed by my Teacher who is a Senior Lecturer at QUT. After he had filled it for me and signed my photograph, I asked him when he had applied for Citizenship (as he is from India i think). His answer was he was not a citizen. He's been a permanent resident for 25 years. I was quite surprised and disappointed to be honest. I had assumed he was a Citizen because he was senior lecturer and been here for a long time. My mistake.

So I have to fill this form again. I know a JP who is going to do this for me but is away on holiday and will be back after 2 weeks. I am just curious whether it is ok for me to physically take the form on my appointment day.

Thanks and sorry to make u read my story.

As I understand it citizenship test date letters in Sydney/Parramatta are coming out approx 4-6 weeks after lodging the application, so I expect you'll probably be receiving your shortly. The letter will generally arrive 10 days prior to the date they have allocated for you where you'll present the originals, etc of the documents they need (assuming you lodged online) and after that have you sit the test. The test prep booklet is VERY helpful, as some of the test questions tend to be a bit specialised (ie, colours of Aboriginal flag, etc). Generally after the test date you'll get an approval letter within 7-10 days as in Sydney they like to finalise the day's tests/appointments that day or shortly thereafter. Then 5-6 months later, depending on the backlog where you are having your citizenship ceremony, you'll get the ceremony invitation letter. The most recent case we had was for a citizenship ceremony in Blacktown NSW, and the ceremony date was roughly 6 months after the approval letter date.

Hope this helps!

...Are there any benefits to becoming a citizen or is it just if you feel you are now an australian?....

Right to vote and stop Tony Abbott from ruining our country ;)

Work in all govt jobs.

Can become a politician.

No need to continually get re-entry visas when your initial re-entry period on your PR visa runs out.

Consular assistance.

Pass citizenship to children even if born overseas.

Some govt benefits like mostly no upfront uni fees - instead can be paid back when earning over a certain amount. If only PR all fees must be paid upfront.

Can't be sent back to the British Isles if you commit a criminal offence :)
