MrsMoo
Anyone know of a place in Canberra that does a vague approximation to good old fashioned English fish and chips?

MrsMoo
So far I've been directed to Bernies from the Bay at Charnwood. Got there tonight to find they don't open Tuesdays...my son was distraught:cry:

MrsMoo
I found this on the internet: http://the-riotact.com/best-fish-n-chips-in-canberra/7781 Thanks Jove. I did come across that but I wasn't sure if I would agreed with what Canberran's call 'good' fish and chips Coming from the North East of England I think I have possibly been spoilt though! jove
How about this?> http://girlaboutcanberra.blogspot.nl/2011/10/review-mutiny-fish-and-chips-fish-shack.html fries look too american ad a bit overcooked for my tastes. MrsMoo
Looks worth a shot. Its so funny to see squid/prawns etc - its all a bit gourmet for England isn't it; where the height of sophistication is possibly a battered sausage and chips or maybe haddock instead of cod:biglaugh:
jove
and the ubiquitous deep fried mars bar or deep fried pizza yuck LOL
sunniecat
let me know if you find one! decent fish seems to be reasonably easy to find (Mawson is our closest) but proper 'chippy' chips have so far evaded us.
pntaylor
The best I've had so far was from Naked Fish in Mawson but as sunniecat points out proper chips are somewhat hard to find.
Thom
Try Hawker chippy at Hawker shops. Proper chippy with great chips.
Guest Oliver John Williams
There a number of reasonable places in Canberra but if your looking for proper fish and chips then your going to have to go to Bateman's Bay Boatshed on the water a 2.5hr drive away. In Canberra, if your looking for genuine British style then O'connor is your best place, I seem to remember that the owners a pom too. If your looking for sit down then Deakin isn't too bad but a little pricey. I'm not sure you will ever match true northern fish 'n' chips.

Guest Oliver John Williams
2.5 hrs to get to the Bay?? thats a very conservative estimate, google maps is 1hr 57mins, but it depends on weather, traffic, time of day, type of car, type of driver, whether there's been a landslide! It can take me that long in my 1965 Morris Minor!

It can take me that long in my 1965 Morris Minor! In my loony past we did it somewhat quicker, as close to 60 mins as makes no difference. I think I have used my nine lives many times over
Guest Bazinga
Loved the chips at the Regal Charcoal Chicken place in Charnwood. Also fond of their roast chooks
Thom
Bernies at teh Bay in Charney is a good chipper, but my favourite is now "Naked Fish" at Mawson.
