What is Toowoomba like for families????

Hello everyone, my wife and I are also considering a move to Toowoomba at the moment, we have been in discussion with a local bank about a role for me there, and I have been trying to decide whether Toowoomba would be a better option for us vs Melbourne (were I also have a role on offer). If anyone in Toowoomba has any other thoughts on why Toowoomba would be a better choice then Melbourne we would be all ears. We are not really city folks, so the cosmopolitan side of things is not really a concern. Do any expats out in Toowoomba get together at all for social catch ups? We really want to make sure we make some new friends when we get out there!

Thanks,

Andrew

The new Highfields High school will open in 2015, The new catholic primary has now opened and a catholic High is in the pipe line. Highfields shopping center is also to be extended. The by pass will be starting soon so removing many of the trucks from the city center, and the new Airport will open at the end of this year.

Interesting, Tina2. I wonder if, with the influx of people, the hwy will be upgraded. It used to be quite dangerous in winter, what with the rain and fog on the hill. Saw a couple of trucks could not make it up the grade (1980s)

Cheers, Bobj.

Hi Bobj

Yes ! the council is going to not only upgrade the road but plant trees to form a boulavard out to the three areas, Highfield, Meringandan, and meringandan west, there will also be name signs going in to welcome drivers to each village. EOI have now gone out for the Toowoomba by pass so it will start next year and cut travel time from Toowoomba to Brisbane down to around 1 1/2 hours. Truck drives are happy to pay the toll as they say it will be far cheaper than the fuel they need to use to get up and down the range. Airport runway is just about finished, so much so they have had to put a white cross on the runway to show it is closed as some light planes have been trying to land. Terminal is well on its way almost at lock up, and the business park will be next. Talking 3000 jobs it will bring into the area.

Well now I'm a resident, I can comment with some knowledge and authority:wink:

I know the hill you are talking about Bob, thank goodness the cars are automatic, can you imagine the hill starts!!??

We have explored quite a few suburbs in our first week (mainly due to the schools we have visited) and I have to say, we are avoiding Harlaxton, North Toowoomba, Rockville and Wilsonton, I think the Aussie word for some of the residents around here is 'bogan'.

We like Middle Ridge and Kearneys Spring so we will most likely find a rental there for at least 6 months see how we get on.

Despite my comment above, my first impressions of Toowoomba are very good, I love the relaxed laid back pace of life, the open spaces and the general friendliness of the majority of people is heart-warming.

I think I've fallen in love with the place !

Hi we are a family of 4. We have two boys 7&10 . And we think Toowoomba is great for family's. Even though it's a city it has more of a town feel to it. We live in The Glenvale suburb. As we wanted to send the boys to Glenvale state school. There is plenty to do and traveling from one side of the city to the other only takes 20 mins. So you are never too far away from shops etc.. The Parks are great here , so many to choose from. Queens park is the main one. And always has events going on.

hope this is a bit helpfull.

Yes the Christmas lights in queens park are spectacular. They had a great community presence. My boys loved them last year. It was our first xmas in the sunshine, and the lights made it feel more like a British xmas :-)

The Garden Town shops closed it doors last Thursday , ready for the new plans. Which will connect the garden town shopping centre to the grand central but I believe the update is going to take two years to complete. Im sure it will be great for Toowoomba once completed. It is definitely a growing city and will bring lots of job opportunity's with all the new developments taking place.

Thanks Jane, we have a house up there but are working interstate so good to know the shopping center is moving forward. Heard railway Tce opposite the new shopping center was pretty run down but now being turned into a coffee strip. Well Camp airport will be operational before the end of the year and the new freeway will start being built in 2015 so yet a very exciting time for Toowoomba.

Wellcamp open to the public on September 28th. Might see if the family want to go.

"THE gates to the Wellcamp Airport will be thrown open to the public on September 28 as part of a community open day to showcase the new airport.

General manager Phil Gregory said the event would be the only chance for the public to see all areas of the airport before it goes operational later this year.

"We're inviting everyone to be part of Australian aviation history as we unveil the first public airport built in Australia in 50 years," Mr Gregory said.

"Most of the construction will be complete by then so guests will be able to tour the terminal and the massive 2.87km runway including access to areas that will be restricted when the airport opens in November. There'll be lots of entertainment for the whole family including aerial shows, aircraft displays and live performances by local bands."

Hi Fish, yes we are ticked off by that, we are going up to our house in early October to talk to some builders about renovations before we return for good, so will miss it by just a few days LOL would love to have been able to get out to have a look. The business park is going to bring jobs and money to Toowoomba. Sure hope the Wagners get the tender for the new freeway, at least then we know it will be finished on time.

And TRACC is holding it's first performance in 4 days before it's official September opening:

The new 300 seat performance space should provide a nice complement to the existing larger Empire theatre:

Bugger, I'll have to take some photos for you :) Yes, with the new road also bringing passengers and freight straight to their airport they won't be wasting any time I reckon...

Toowoomba is evolving, and from what I have seen in a really good way, the TRACC building looks impressive but blends well with other near by buildings. We wont be back for good until Aug 2016 by then Toowoomba will be a different city. Will be so good to see most of the trucks out of the city center. We are really looking forward to getting back.

Thats right think of the money and time saved having your business next door to the airport and able to fly your goods in and out, and a freeway passing the business center what more could you ask for. Watch the blocks sell like hot cakes once they are released. We will be flying our dog home direct into Well Camp. Toowoomba always had great schools, hospitals and medical specialists but the range has held Toowoomba back for years but that is all about to change now. Apparently the new shopping center will be the size of the shopping center at Robina on the Gold Coast. Do you know much about the proposed expansion to Highfields ? I heard there is a new town center planned, with mix residential areas and more shops.

Last I heard the grand central/gardentown combined floorspace will be around 88,000sqm. Robina is around 125,000sqm but 88,000 is massive still for a town the size of Toowoomba. Here's a render:

morning Bobj, what you have there is the current Highfields, but I was doing some "googling" and came across some info which of course i cant find now, but it was talking about an expansion to start in 2015, it talked about a "high street" with shops and then mix residential so town houses, to larger blocks for single dwellings. Also a sports center is going in and a new state high school will open in 2015 with the catholic school planning to expand to high school in 2016. We have a place out at Meringandan West, and all the blocks out there will remain large blocks so 1/2 to 1 acre, the main roads to that area are also to have trees planted to for a boulavard.
