If it's just for 3 or 4 months it wouldn't really matter where you go to be honest.

But I want to enjoy during those 4 months haha

For example my lifestyle while I am not working is: Commute with bicycle through the city, riding the outdoors to discover new places, walk the streets of the city, have a coffee, go shopping... I do not need more for 4 months and I think (looking at Google's images) that Bendigo seems like a small town with a lot of events. Well, I am going to work, I will read you in 10h ;)

I wouldn't want to live in Bendigo either but it is a nice town.  I was brought up in London and it would be too big a contrast for me but if you were a country kid it might be ideal.  Better than Ballarat to my mind. Better than Geelong, too.

I visited Bendigo quite a few times when we lived in Victoria, you would really have to love the bush life to settle somewhere like that, to me it's isolated and insular BUT some like that.

First of all thank you for your answers.

My idea is not to live there for an unlimited time, only for 3-4 months trying to work in the regional Australia (Bendigo belongs to that zone) to apply for the second year visa. If I can achieve my idea then I would move to other popular places like Sydney, Melbourne... ;)

By the way, if you have to choose between Bendigo and Toowoomba, which would you choose? (Thinking it is only for a 3-4 months time)

    Thanks

  3. I would like to correct and error, here is the correct paragraph:

Other thing I remembered is the second year visa. To be able to apply for the second year Work and Holiday Visa you have to work 88 days (specified work: Plant and animal cultivation, Felling trees, Fishing and Pearling, Mining and Construction) in the regional Australia and most of the cities written in the original post are not in regional Australia. Toowoomba is within the regional area.

    Hey mate,

I think job wise you would be best off in Sydney or Melbourne, while your rent will be more expensive so will your earnings and the availability of work, particularly in construction.

Regarding, transport, I think anywhere outside of inner Sydney,  Melbourne and maybe Brisbane you will need a vehicle.  Even in Perth, public transport is not that great and a car/M bike is needed.

If you are determined to go to a smaller centre, of your list, I would go for Newcastle.  You will want to be near the coast, espeically in summer -  it gets hot here.  I don't know Toowoomba persoanlly but anywhere that is a few hours drive from the coast is too far for me.

Your written English seems ok, where are you from?  Maybe brush up on spoken English before arriving.  As a civil engineer, look at the big Australian builders and developers in advance (Lendlease, Mirvac etc)

    Hello Collie,

During all these days I have been thinking about the place to go. Now I only have a flight to Singapore (to your question: I am from Spain), so I have to know where to go in Australia to buy the other flight.

Other thing I remembered is the second year visa. To be able to apply for the second year Work and Holiday Visa you have to work 88 days (specified work: Plant and animal cultivation, Felling trees, Fishing and Pearling, Mining and Construction) in the regional Australia and most of the cities written in the original post are in regional Australia. Toowoomba is within the regional area.

This is the Great Brisbane border, out of that line is considered as Regional Australia:

So, my thought today is something like:

    1. Land in Gold Coast from Singapore.
    2. Spend 2-3 days in the city and open a Bank Account, buy a phone number, ask for the Tax File Number.
    3. Take the bus/train and move to Toowoomba.
    4. Look for a job that counts as a specified work and have a first contact with Australian people, life style,  Australian tradition, etc.
    5. With a better spoken english (I hope :D) move to a big city and enjoy all I have read about them.

I have been walking for Toowoomba with Google Street View and from end to end there is 5km aprox, if I could live and work within that city it would be perfect. That is my only fear.

Thank you for your time :)

I like Toowoomba it's beautiful, it is a long way to the ocean if you like to be near the beach. It has some beautiful gardens to compensate. At the bottom of the range you can buy a brand new house with an acre of land for $379,000. If you lived in Gatton you would be in the middle of Ipswich and Toowoomba so would keep your working options open.

    Roger that!

I know distances in Australia are too big, but let's suppose I live in Toowoomba. Do you think I can be self-sufficient with a bicycle (assuming I find a job in the center)?

Might be of interest for you. Below is taken from CommSec's latest 'State of the States' report and gives an idea about the level of construction in each state at the moment.

Thanks for the information, it will help me a lot. Looking at graphic, what I have read about Perth and the decrease of the jobs was right.

    Ballarat

Could be a good choice too, and 1h from Melbourne.

I would have thought South East Melbourne around Cranbourne would still be quite busy when it comes to construction. You mentioned Toowoomba and Plainland, Plainland is small probably considered a village to a lot of members. There is however a lot of building taking place there at the moment and for the next few years, same for Toowoomba.

'As @akiralx as said it's quite a few years since we were in Geelong but even then we noticed how much it had changed for the better. So it would also be worth considering

Thanks for your answer. I do not know why, but I think I like Toowoomba more than others because of how it sounds xD

Good luck mate! Construction here in Launceston is once again becoming very vibrant ! Hopefully you will find your niche and quickly!

    Happy to read this :)

I am staying in this forum to read more topics and ask more questions. My idea to flight to Australia was on late November but now I am reconsidering it because I have read in other topic that during summer period Australian students are in holidays and a lot of jobs go to them (which I find normal and perfect by the way).

What type of work are you looking for ?

Do you have any qualifications ?

Newcastle is really on the up at the moment and rents are not too bad

Thanks to all of you for your answers. I can gather and update my information with them :)

Rallyman, I would like to work in construction. Yes I do, I am civil engineer but my english level from 0 to 120 is 50. I suppose I will have to start doing some unskilled works until I reach a better english. Anyway I have 3 years experience, not too much not too little.

    Thank you again :)

PD: I am going to look into Newcastle :)

  9. Hello people, thinking about where to live for a limited time (1 year max) I have arrived a conclusion. Go to a big city has pros but also cons. Basically I do not like the idea of living in a city where the room I can afford be 15 km from CBD.

So I am looking for a small cities (100.000-500.000 people) where I can find my opportunity (any work that is not a waiter :D). Can you give me a few options? I read about Toowoomba, Plainland... any more?

These are the other <500.000 cities:

    • Newcastle
    • Wollongong
    • Sunshine Coast
    • Geelong
    • Launceston
    • Albury-Wodonga

    Thank you very much :)

Good luck Andreas,  I can't speak for Adelaide or Canberra but Perth is doing it quite tough at the moment with work hard to come to by for nearly all trades.  Many people in Perth are moving or commuting to Sydney and Melbourne.

There is a lot of construction work going on in Sydney at the moment with 3 very large public projects underway (WestConnex, NW rail and Light rail)

Also things tend to get very quiet nearly everywhere in Australia (except tourism) in Dec and Jan as it is Xmas and then the long summer holidays so many people go away.  It can be hard to find work from about mid Nov to Australia day (Jan 26) when things start picking up again.

I know you say that it would prefer a smaller city but for a young person exploring Australia, you may find Adelaide, Canberra and even Perth very quiet.  There is a large backpacker scene in Sydney and Melbourne and then people tend to head north up the East coast to/of Queensland in the cooler months (April - Sept).

Personally, I don't see the attraction of Canberra at all for somebody visiting (although I had a few good nights there in my youth).  For me Australia is about the weather and beach lifestyle which you will not get in Canberra.

Good luck and have a blast.

Thank you for your answer Collie :)

I completely agree with your response, but my fear is the demand/supply to rent a room. Here in my country I have and idea how difficult is to find a good room at a fair price, so I can't imagine the same in Sydney or Melbourne (both are Top10 cities in the world).

About Perth, thank you for the information, I have read something about the construction work decent, so I just discarded that option right now ;)

Canberra isn't that great for casual unskilled jobs, we don't get many WHV holders but everyone should try the National Capital for a while at least. Just around the summer holidays time is not a good time for anyone to be looking for casual work - you'll be in competition with the local kids on holidays and Canberra is very much a "who you know" rather than "what you know" but if you can develop skills as an outstanding barista you should pick up something!

Thank you for your point of view Quoll.

is very much a "who you know" rather than "what you know"

I will consider to flight to Australia after summer holidays.

Adelaide can be good for backpackers at certain times of the year. There can be lots of farm work (fruit picking, wineries etc) and some work down on Kangaroo Island which may be worth checking out.

Also a couple of youth hostels that are often busy and perhaps a chance of finding work or word of mouth from others using those places.

Interesting. I keep your response as an other option ;)

And this question for all of you: What is your idea about Toowoomba? 1h aprox. from Brisbane, 100k people (more native speakers in my opinion, good for me) and it seems it has a good opportunities.

    Thank you mates :)

  11. Hello everyone, my name is Andreas and this next november-december I am going to travel to Australia. My problem is I do not know where to go.

I studied something related with construction and my experience in that area in my opinion is medium. Where I do not have experience is in english language. I have to say that will be a big problem for me at the beginning but I am sure I will solve it quickly because I love english.

I am under 30 years old, I like big cities but does not necessary have to be Sydney or Melbourne, I think small city (1M people) can be better to find a room and know the differences little by little between my country and your country. I looked for information about Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. At the end, all the information I have found about them is: it is okay but they are not Sydney or Melbourne... xD

During my Visa time I can move around the country as much as I want, so I prefer arrive in a small city, spend there (2,3,6... months) to speak and understand your language better than the first day and then if I have a good feeling move to Sydney (for example). What is your opinion about my idea? During that first stage I assume I will work in unskilled work, but it is okay for me.

Now knowing my profile which of those cities I told you before would you live in?

Thank you for your time, sorry for my write mistakes I thank you for your help.

    Andreas
