  1. I think there is a strong realisation certainly in Adelaide that the government is inept and incompetent, the place has been dying for years and now there is simply not enough income to pay all the government liabilities (over 10% of the population is directly employed by the government) the problem is how do you fix it when they are so ingrained in the system, you can't embark on large reform, the cancer is spread too deep and wide and to remove it would surely kill the patient. There are massive contract and pension liabilities that will outweigh any south australian efforts to remedy, this is what happens when you have ingrained nepotism and cronyism which leads inevitably to incompetence and lack of professionalism.
  2. In March this year We sold our house in Adelaide (eastern suburbs kens park) 700K (720m2) to a Chinese family who could not speak a word of english , next door neighbour was not happy and actually asked us not to sell to the chinese!!!!!!, haha tough luck , what a racist clown. We had another offer of 750 but decided to take what was real as we just could not get out of adelaide quick enough. The chinese paid cash, no financing required. On our old street this makes four of the 10 houses now owned by chinese,
  3. Nah mate, it's adelaide, and the kids at the skate park are all on juvenille detention, and we were 4.8km from the city centre. (which itself is dead) Adelaide is dead and that's a fact. Lived in Sydney for 8 years and it's totally different, easy to get to the beach, had 2/3 local pubs within easy walking distance and kids had plenty of others to play with in the park and make friends. No so in adelaide, would not recommend it as others have observed.
  4. Took my 7 year old boy out last weekend on his Bmx, we cycled 3 odd miles to the local pub (wife likes that distance, just far enough to keep me out of it on a regular basis) Met a lovely old chap at the bar, old bloke , joined him for a pint of harveys (kent/east sussex), loads of stories, lovely chap, used to work on John Mills farm, near where the original "whistle down the wind" was inspired, spent an hour chatting there, he jumped on his bus and we cycled back (well walked up a hill) and I told my 7 year old the story of whistle down the wind... on the way back through the country lane Never did that in Kensington Adelaide in the 4 years we were there, Pubs like that don't simply exist there & the people just don't mix. We used to regularly cycle to the shops and goto kensi park, (nets , oval) only saw people my kids ages a few times, my mum came out in early 2014 and wanted to know where all the children were ? It was like something out of Vulgaria, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, except more sinister.......... because that was a movie and not real and adelaide although we lived there seemed real..........not so sure now though.
  5. [h=1]Labor's jobs bombshell: no improvement "best case scenario"[/h] [h=2] [/h] South Australia’s unemployment rate would hit 9.3 per cent within two years under a “feasible” scenario modelled by the State Government. The Weatherill administration’s 2015 “Economic Statement”, to be published today, paints a grim picture of the state’s employment outlook. It presents three potential scenarios for SA’s unemployment rate by the end of 2017 – the most optimistic of which is 7.5 per cent, virtually unchanged from the nation-lagging figure published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this month. Alarmingly though, the statement says that to hold steady at 7.5 per cent unemployment by the end of 2017 “SA would need to nearly double the rate of employment growth over the next two years”. The worst-case scenario modelled “depicts what would happen if employment growth stopped”. “Under this scenario, we could expect the unemployment rate to rise to around 9.3 per cent by the end of 2017,” says the document. Read the full article here and make sure to read what the locals comment on: http://indaily.com.au/news/2015/11/25/labors-jobs-bombshell-no-improvement-best-case-scenario/
  6. http://www.realestate.com.au/rent/property-house-with-3-bedrooms-in-five+dock%2c+nsw+2046%3b+/list-1?maxBeds=any&source=location-search ok so maybe not burwood, concord, croydon, fivedock and drummoyne (hubby can ride a bike to Lidcombe if he's fit) Bad news is rents are going to be 700-900 + per week for anything decent, and if it's alot less, then there is a reason, usually area or state of repair
  7. we had the fire going last week end and I was woken by whoops and wheee's by my three aussie kids as we had..............wait for it...............snow on saturday morning, that low pressure scooted the temps from a mild 8/9 down to 1-2 on saturday morning, and a light dusting ensued, all gone by 1400 on saturday, but the kids excitement and hopping around is reminiscent of when I drove the landcruiser onto henley beach and got stuck right up to the runners!
  8. Hello, well done, Heavy Transport ? With two little un's and new to area, I'd say not lidcombe, not Auburn, nor any of the areas immediately west of lidcombe, I'd avoid Bankstown and l would definitely not say Lakemba, Punchbowl nor Greenacre, unless you speak arabic. Ryde, Gladesville, Burwood at a push, but Five dock , abbotsford to the east would be nice, Parts of paramatta, even Rydlemere, but avoid villawood , fairfield and cabramatta. Properties will be cheap-ish, so best to look around and try a short let and see if you like the place/explore different places, I would not suggest taking a long term let say for example right next to bankstown airport because it's attractive. I've lived in the inner west suburbs of sydney (Balmain/Leichardt) and often arrived at bankstown at all hours of the day and I simply cannot recommend it.
  9. I disagree, South Australia as a strategy to attract people has dropped and been in the process of dropping eligibility criteria for the 190visa since 2012, thus making it more attractive to emigrate to South Australia, whilst spruiking how lovely the place is to live ? What they did not inform these applicants was that SA was a basket case economically, and whilst the first casualties will be the degree level skilled, it won't take long for trades and finally unskilled to follow, infact we are already seeing a significant drop off in available work for Plumbers, Chippies and brickies. Why emigrate to work in Woolies ? Not what I had in mind for my family.
  10. any combination of bags up to 30kg per person, typically you don't want your checkin big singles to weigh more than 23kg each (baggage handlers don't like it and neither will you at the destination). You should not lose more than 2-3kg per large case and 1kg with smaller hand held rollers
  11. Actually as an addendum to what I've said above: I had to travel in 2007 due compassionate with an expired PR visa on my EU passport as i became an aussie citizen a few months before, so technically my PR was invalid/expired due my citizenship ceremony, however since my old passport was non-bio and my PR had not been stamped invalid, I simply travelled! Coming back in some weeks after burying my loved one, I still recall the immigration clown asking me if this was my PR and what was my reason for travel - Compassionate ? (those of you who know me on this site won't be surprised with my answer), why yes, it's my Visa and I coloured it in myself.............. what a knob!!!
  12. Yes you can, this is an unusual and compassionate circumstance, the passport is actually no more than a travel document, oddly it does not imply citizenship as a diplomatic mate of mine informs me (yes I know, I don't figure that one out either). You can get exceptional circumstance and travel on your old EU/UK one. I left on a Aus passport (that was a bit tatty as I used to travel for work alot .= airline work) and my damaged biometric page on my aussie passport was picked up on by the Aussie border control officer who informed me that I may not be able to get into the UK with a damaged aussie passport, I simply held up my EU passport and waved it , and the officer simply smiled and said renew the aussie one as soon as practical in the UK. Entry into the UK was fine as my EU/UK passport was biometric so , no issue.
  13. I can assure you , I'm feeling the love Di, I'm feeling the love.... I'm sure the state will go from strength to strength, be assured also, I'm watching with not much of a breath held .
  14. not at all, some very nice people in adelaide, just in the minority, most are forgettable and very shallow, pity really, the place has potential, just not yet,
  15. obviously not taken from the Adveriser website hen ?
  16. Thanks , you've been very helpful, you're right SA is actually perfect and going gangbusters economically. My bad daaaawg lol
  17. I must confess, I have no idea what you are saying.
  18. Short stay ? hmmmm , comprehension check. Failure is good, we learn from it, I did everything I thought was right, except play the croynism game, and I won't change that. We are no longer in SA, this is a good outcome not only for me but for my three children. I'd like to inform you I have indeed learned my lesson as I am in no way as clever as the Locals. [sarcasm] Been to the tour many times, Did two mutual tours (TdU) from 2009 to 10 ( you know what those are don't you? ), too badgey and too many adelaide fat blokes from santos in lycra corporate gear with 10K bikes so I rode the route another three times on my own with some mates from sydney (yeah, rode with a few inner west clubs in syd). You do indeed have the eye of the world on you during the TdU and they are asking what is the deal with the scrappy fencing around the disorganised city starts by Adelaide City Council (not my words, but the words of a friend of my fathers who's sons are Pro riders from the low countries, Lux Belg Holland etc ). SA needs to be more careful who it pisses off. Went to the oval , invited to the members at the footy a few times, lack of spirit, lack of charm, no clever banter, and lack of vision is what I'd say about the fans there, just cliquism and in-jokes with the same people who knew each other 40 years ago, very tired and very sad. This crows and port , higher and lower socio-economic point scoring is neither healthy nor is it inclusive. It's just sad. Notice I refer not to the building. Saw some clown parent from seaford kids footy club assault another parent at norwood at one of my boys games, class act, lovely stuff on a saturday afternoon. Land Prices in SA are cheap for a reason. Go SA, SA All the way!! (snigger, what a great chant!)
  19. why the pollyanna attitude, Sa is in serious trouble, yet people here are afraid to say so.................. I have to ask why ?
  20. are you taking Ice or drugs or something ? ah honey was in adelaide before you ever got there, I got my citizenship in 2004 , why do you seem to make things up and assume to underestand whats' said so inaccurately and so badly ?, I worked for southcorp wines, aka penfolds, aka treasury wine estates, aka the clowns who destroyed the boutique wine industry in SA in the early noughties. Ask anyone in SA, southcorp wines (the chairman who then went on to set Santos up for their current fail) are a clown outfit, their magill estate operation is a fraction of what it was and what it could be. As regards the comment : "a great place to raise a young family and the majority of those who leave to take their skills to the world when young often return to Adelaide when they have families of their own." It's actually not, it's clique ridden, mono cultural, myopic and very limiting , I know plenty of families who have no intention to return to SA, us included, it's not that it a bad place per se, it's just the professional standard of people working there leaves alot to be desired. as regards world class education, it's been commoditised, you pay, you get. I mentored UniSA masters students (paying 60K+ a year) and the only ones to make it were the overseas ones, the aussie locals failed. Pity, but them's de facts! place is in trouble honey, face up.
  21. Accusation is the incorrect term, I am pointing out facts, Facts as reported by the ABS and ocassionally selectively by your fantastic pinnacle of professional reporting the Advertiser (oh, sorry they don't like to say anything negative about the place) as to Adelaide, you are indeed welcome to it, the human race seem to ignore en-masse negative comments about a place until we find out for ourselves, thank god we only spent three years in adelaide, as one of my friends recently commented, 3 years is 2 years and 51 weeks too much. Everybody in Oz points out the issues with adelaide, are you saying they don't exist, because If I was going to (for example) move my entire family and my toil and efforts in my children to say Bradford from Australia, I'd like to think that an occasional wandering poster on a forum would have the strength and integrity to post some facts about the place Facts are as I have mentioned above. How often do you actually go to the wineries ? Bet it's less than 4 times a year and I used to work for one, so what you posted is not representative. it's misleading.
  22. SA Unemployment is highest in the country. Stats to get a job is two to three times longer than anywhere else inthe country. SA Job losses and so called transformation from a destroyed manufacturing to a new economy will take at least 5/10 years. Net emigration out out of the state by skilled graduates and experienced migrants. Net immigration into the state by people who can't get in elsewhere (hence 2nd choice). Government has spent large on an infrastructure that cannot pay for itself (Oval, expressway - new hospital is 3rd most expensive building in the world and already forecasted to be 2 years over due) SA, Adelaide has the highest average age - a looming liability on state pensions, healthcare and non/low tax paying retirees, forcing disporportional taxing of the earning tranche (18 - 55 year olds) Mypoic Adeladians think that food trucks are an important issue (over 600 respondents in an adelaide city council survey) yet matters of importance to the economy are ignored. Biggest recent Commercial SA success is On the Run, yep, Smoko's, Crispy Creme's . Fast Food and petrol, and lest I forget, underpaying it's staff. Yup, All Class Adelaide, she's a picture.
  23. oh how annoying by Eon, I found now of the ways for proof of address was registering with the electoral roll, then drivers licence at post office, then official correspondence (i.e. Gov, or Job Contract) failing but I think the royal mail don't do that anymore...
  24. We've not had any real trouble with Bank setup, The ID requirements however are stringent and I believe far exceed what is required in Oz, so NI , Passport, DVL and proof of address are required along with some proof of income (employment contract etc), had to wait 3-4 months to get my wife (she's aussie) a bank card and to convert account to joint as her EU passport went missing....lolCurrently avoiding any form of finance like the plague, was given 2 CC's when I setup the bank accounts, hardly use them at all. only to generate a credit transaction history for future use. There is merit in presenting yourselves physically at the bank and organising a 20-30 minute session with the bank official to set it all up, the process is a little onerous but makes the bank a lot happier and you get it done and dusted.6 Months seems harsh for upfront rent, we were asked for 1.5 times as a deposit which I believe is the norm ?
  25. lots of assumptions there nicf, most incorrect, totally agree I dislike adeliade for a number of reasons, nepotism, croynism, unprofessional child protection, cliques, amazing incompetence, mates of mates clubs, massive economic miss-management, dysfunctional leadership at state, council and local, isolation and lack of community, huge looming ICE proplems , sadly Adelaide should have alot more going for it, but it does not. Before you move there , you should think about why is that, why does a place such as this, and on the face of it, such amazing resources , underperform so badly ? Maybe it's not as good as it looks ? I took my autistic boy out of the so called system in adelaide and moved him to east sussex/kent in the uk, and he is thriving, it is such a weight off of our shoulders, for once we feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel, no amount of effort in adelaide worked, and he is a brilliant high functioning chap that is treasured in the UK system yet disregarded in SA. Wrong on so many counts, SA's loss and so it should be.
