  1. You must be so excited. my husband and I just landed in Sydney over a week ago now. Must say loving it, bit tired, as so much to get done. We have already started work and are looking for a rental. Once we find an apartment I feel like we will relax a bit more........having said that have enjoyed a few cocktails at darling harbour, had a couple of dinners out also seen so much already, just having walked around areas trying to narrow down areas to live. Any advice?..................try and make sure before you leave that you get a few days off to relax by yourselves. We found that everything took a lot longer than thought, like sorting shipping stuff, cleaning, emptying house. Consider staying in a hotel for a few days before you fly, as then you will have had everything done and you can just relax, so you can hit the ground running when you land. feel free to Message me if you have any questions. Hopefully I can answer them. ps I wish I hadn't used space in our suitcases for our winter jackets, as we have just been wearing cardigans, jumpers and windbreaker jackets.............who knows if we will need them.
  2. Apologies if this should be in another section, but I am wondering if someone can answer a question for me. We have just landed in Sydney ( must say loving the decision so far) and my husband and I are over on a 457 visa. My question is what form do we fill in online for a tax number? I know we need to make sure that we are down as residents for tax purposes and don't want to get put down as temporary. Is is it the 'Australian resident' form or is it the 'permanent migrant/temporary worker form' we need it fill in. Many thanks, lindsay
  3. Thank you, everyone. I appreciate you taking the time and some useful info there. Decided that looking at reviews of the companies weren't helping as with so many people making the move there are good and bad reviews. So the above info is great for me to sit down again and look at the quotes and then choose one and try to negotiate. thanks again.
  4. Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to choose a shipping company to send stuff to Sydney. Obviously the cost, volume and how the company presented itself when they came round to do the quotes is a major factor. However is there anything else that I should also consider when choosing? Any loopholes anyone found or things they just didn't consider having never done this before. Any help would be appreciated, feel like I am going round and round in circles. Thanks in advance. Lindsay
  5. Thanks Quoll that helps a lot, Are you in Cambridge, Australia or Cambridge, England? I am currently in Cambridge, England but not for long....... Think I will start the list now otherwise I am bound to forget something. Thanks again.
  6. Hello Everyone! My husband and I have just gotten our 457 visa through after only 17 days!!!!!! Couldn't believe it, so we are frantically trying to get everything sorted, so we can get to Sydney to start work ASAP. I have searched threads but couldn't find the answers, so I apologise if this has been asked before. What I would like to know is how final do you leave things in the UK when on a 457 visa? I realise you need to tell the tax man, but can you leave bank accounts open, do you need to take your Doctors/Dentists notes with you. Is it just a case of informing people you will just be temporarily out of the country and actually just need to settle bills before you go and a forwarding address. Think I need to start to do lists, as I can imagine that this could get a bit overwhelming.
  7. Hi! My husband and I are also moving to Sydney in May. We have both been offered jobs on a 457 visa. I have found this website the best for finding out answers to my thousands of questions. Currently I am trying to decide what to do with all our stuff, container? move cube? Storage? so much to think about, hope my poor little brain can keep up with me till May. I have been looking at places to rent too. I find domain the best website to use. They also have a good app. Likewise we are looking for a 2 bed place that is close to CBD. I think you are correct in looking at places in Mosman and Neutral Bay. Try looking at McMahones Point on the other side of the bridge. One of our Aussie mates also suggested Glebe and Balmain. We are trying to find places that has good night transport links or not too far by taxi, as we may work some night shifts. I think I have seen some places that are pet friendly but you might not find a lot of places that allow pets. Would be great to make some contacts with people that are in the same situation and share experiences. Also would be great to catch up once in Sydney and make new friends. Lindsay
  8. Hi Everyone, So for a couple of weeks I have been trawling the threads to get myself better prepared for the decision we have to make. My husband and I ( in our 30's and currently no children) have both been offered jobs to work in Sydney on a 457 visa. My husband would be the visa holder. However we would hope to go down the route of PR once there. We need to make a decision soon. But not sure how to make the decision. Currently I am employed full-time, but I must admit over the last few years there has been redundancies and there is a possible changeover of management, so who knows what the future will hold. My husband has been in a part-time contract for a while now and despite his best efforts has not managed to get a full-time job. The salaries we have been offered are good. So financially we would be ok. They have been generous in offering help with relocation and 3 weeks accommodation. At the moment we are just scared to say yes or no. So how did you all make the decision to go ahead and make the move? Can any of you share with me your experience of living in Sydney? Being on a 457 visa? and have any of you started a family while on a 457 visa? Any advice or things you have experienced both positive or negative that you can share would be greatly appreciated.
