  1. Hi Quoll You are probably right about the visa issue and jobs. He’s had no luck at all, having said that neither have many locals who line the captain Cook highway every morning with signs that say ‘ looking fir work’. It’s soul destroying seeing young people having to do this. I earn about 100k here but I doubt that would go far in metropolitan Victoria. The OH has a few contacts down there so maybe easier. The daughter is in year 11, so completely screwed about GCSEs however a VCE completed may help towards her alevels which she does not mind doing again as we will probably head back after our four years here. It has been tricky being here and we’ve made huge mistakes but that’s our life! We’ve completely screwed up. We’ve had two cars written off - one was stolen and driven through cane fields, the other was driven into at a roundabout and damaged beyond repair. We’ve been burgled by 8 indigenous youths who stole iPads, phones, bags, purses and went into our kids bedrooms. We had a party and we’re all very drunk on home brew and did not hear a bloody thing. It’s not been an easy 19 months. We thought we had researched enough but you cannot beat the lived experience
  2. Hello all Ive been reading this post with interest. We moved to cairns from Manchester 19 months ago. We sold everything and came on a 457 visa. I’m employed with a good employer and feel fairly settled career wise now I’ve jumped through every hoop imaginable and progressing well. My husband however cannot abide it. It was never his dream to come here he did it because I wanted to. He cannot find work (has applied for 139 jobs with no luck or interview!) and it has limited culture. It is however extreamly beautiful but that wans after time. The children are settled one in year 11 and one in year 5, however out 15 year old misses a city and the cultural vibe. Although we are not happy here in Cairns we cannot dismiss Australia yet, we will move to Melbourne and see if the seasonal changes and culture help us to feel more at home! We’re not sure we are doing the right thing but we feel we cannot cut our losses just yet. We’ve spent everything we had on settling up, have limited savings to move and would be in a sorry state on returning to the U.K. any advice would be massively appreciated.
  3. We are going to cairns next month and cannot wait. See plenty of drunks and druggies in central Manchester. It's not safe walking down market street at night!

    cairns

Hi Debs Everything!!!! No only kidding as have five quite a bit of research but nothing beats real people knowledge and experience. Whereabouts inmanchester are you from? I have a job at cairns private hospital and although nervous am looking forward to starting! I would like info on suburbs, schooling and any info on music tuition as my hubby is a self employed music tutor here and would like to continue to do this, but is prepared to turn his hand to most things! We are hugely anxious but excited. Any info would be great fully received!

    cairns

Hi all Our house is sold and our 457 visas are granted. I have a job in Cairns and will be looking at moving in the next three weeks. I will be emigrating with two children aged 14 and 9 and my husband Howard, won't tell you his age!!! Any advice will be appreciated on making this move smoother. It has been a hard 18 months getting AHPRA registration, obtaining visas and selling a house. We are from Manchester in the UK and are looking for a slower pace of life. Any info/advice is appreciated. Ta Deb
  6. Thanks for the information. Have had a couple more quotes that are so much more reasonable from medibank and bupa and will go with one of these. I cannot get my head around the Australian medical system and if with private healthcare you have to pay upfront first then claim it back. The high BP is a bit of a bolt out of the blue to be honest all other tests have come back normal, so assumed it was lifestyle factors. It's certainly something else to think about before moving.
  7. Hello from Manchester I am after some advice! I am a UK trained midwife and have secured a job in cairns and my visa nomination has been submitted. I have filled in my part of the 457 visa application and started to get quotes for health insurance, which so far have been astronomical. Was quoted £847 a month for a family of four only. Surely this cannot be right. As I am from the UK I assumed I would qualify for Medicare as would be a Oz tax payer. Please can you advise as this seems too high. We have no complex medical problems , hubby has just been diagnosed with high blood pressure only and it's stable on meds. This has been our dream for some time and feel it is one thing after another at present

    Burnie

Dear all, I have been offered a job in Burnie Tasmania and am wondering if anone can help with information about the area. We are a family of 6 and my eldest child (22) will be staying in the UK. My husband works as a self employed music teacher and plays in a band. I work in healthcare and am awaiting my 457 visa. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if Burnie is a noce place to live. We currently livce in Manchester (UK) and hate . We want a peaceful relaxing life from now on. Many thanks Debs
  9. Hi All, Thanks for your responses. I kept them informed over the year with monthly updays and forwarded Ahpra responses to them. I called them this morning and spoke to the HR department who are not sure if a vacancy still exists, despite filling in 457 paperwork. I am now awaiting a phone call but am assuming that as it is now 1808 in WA it may be tomorrow or at some point! Very frustrating. On the upside I have a telephone interview tomorrow so hopefully may get to Perth at some point! Thanks again guys Deb xx
  10. HI i have tried to message you but it would not allow. I am a midwife in the UK with AHPRA registration with 4 years experience working in a large unit in Manchester. I am interested in the position as currently work nights. Please can you e-mail further details. If you cannot PM let me know and I will send my e-mail address. Thanks Deborah Buxton
  11. I will call them on monday .....
  12. HI All, I am just wondering if anyone can enlighten me on our situation. I applied for a job in June 2011 as a midwife in WA and was advised that I had been successful and the company was willing to sponser me and my family depending on my AHPRA registration, my registration came through last month after a whole year of waiting as they lost documents, changed the original form etc (just generally being AHPRA). Anyway since advising the hospital of my registration things have gone very quiet from them despite me sending e-mails to the HR department. I am wondering if I should persue the matter further or apply to different hospital? I do not know if I expect things to be done quickly and I am being inpatient or if it is a bit of a brush off! Has anyone else been in this situation.
  13. HI all Just thought i would update you on the further incompetance of AHPRA, after weeks of them advising me that my professional midwifery transcript is not correct - it has turned out that the problem they had was in my surname - i trained under my maiden name but my registration is in my married name, despite sending my marriage certificate they could not get their wee little heads around the change!!! God give me strength!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAArrrrrrggghhh. I sympathise with the problems everyone has with them. Complete Buffoons:wacko:
  14. HI Sorry to hear that your Husbands Job is no longer available. AHPRA really take there time and I am in a similar position in relation to receiving registration. Having said that now that he has AHPRA registration it may be worthwhile for him to register with some nursing agencies as it maybe a quicker way of getting your 457, as a friend of mine got her registration first registered with an agency, had her interview, vias came through in 4 weeks and she left after a process of just 8 weeks. Having said that she had no house to sell, no children to sort out and savings. Good Luck i hope all works out for you x:wub:
  15. HI all Sent my Ahpra 3/3/12 - delay due to my transcript being an accademic one and not a professional midwifery on (apparently!!!) although two sent. Have spoke to the university of Salford three times and they advise that the transcript is correct but ahpra saying it is incorrect.........am at my wits end with them. Help??????...do I call them and badger them to get there arses in gear put in a complaint as my e-mails have gone unanswered I have had a job offer conditional on me obtaining my ahpra registration and have been waiting ages. :arghh:
