  1. If you like NSW but don't want to live in Sydney, want to be near Hospitals, would like to be close to great beaches with plenty of dog friendly green space - what about Wollongong (part of the Illawarra Region around 60 mins south of Sydney). http://illawarratourism.com.au/
  2. Hi - only just saw this thread. One of my staff on a 457 passed away a couple of weeks ago. His family are required to leave Aust within 28 days from the date of his passing.
  3. Lovely to read such a positive post. Hope things go from strength to strength for you.
  4. Not sure if I have missed something here but shouldn't you be calling them to set up an appointment rather than them calling you?
  5. Welcome to Australia :biglaugh:
  6. I'm not sure what to say but wanted to let you know that I care
  7. Hi - not sure how helpful it will be but it might be worth checking out the Simply Hired site (link to fencing section below). http://www.simplyhired.com.au/a/jobs/list/q-fencing
  8. The type of work you hope to get might make a difference as to the best place to live.
  9. I googled the answer and must admit I ended up checking a couple of different sites when the first one said it was Norway. But, sure enough the others said Norway as well.
  10. Hi Mangoed - There are a few Aussies on PIO - I'm one but my OH is a Brit. Where abouts in Aust are you planning to move to when you come back?
  11. :nah: If that one had been conducted properly Aust would have come out at No 1
  12. Maybe you have started making sense? PS (off topic - hope you and the family had a great holiday)
  13. My uncle is living in the UK at the moment and one of the things he comments on a lot is the number of people who constantly talk about wanting to move out of the UK. His other observation though is that most still live in the area they were born and he doubts they would survive a move to the next town much less a new country.
  14. The Southern Highlands of NSW have a temperate climate and four seasons. Whether or not you could find work there would depend on what you do. http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=Towns&sp-a=00022f1c-sp00000000
  15. I think you are supposed to carry your licence when driving anywhere in Aust. Having said that my daughter got pulled over for speeding a few weeks ago in ACT and they gave her 24hrs to produce it at the local police station. She got a lecture for not having it with her but no other penalty. Not sure if she got away with it because she is young and very attractive though

    Tea bags!

I don't drink tea (I'm a coffee devotee) but my OH drinks Tetley.
  17. I'm an Aussie and have friends from the UK (and elsewhere in the world). The things that bind us together are shared interests, similar sense of humour, same approach to life. We started out just saying 'hi' and became friends over time but I can't tell you when it happened because it was a gradual thing. I will always have room in my life for new friends but I am not actively looking to add to my circle. Realistically if someone wants to be my friend they are going to have to make the initial effort and invite me to things they think we will both enjoy or ask to tag along to things they know I am doing.

    Is my hamster dead?

Well there you go - learn something every day
  19. Mental health care is one area where I think we really have a lot of work to do in Aust. There are some services of course but they seem to be very much a band-aid approach. I don't know much about the services available I only know that people have been more or less begging for improved services for many, many years. If your mum has access to good services there I would think carefully about moving.
  20. Hi - I'm an Aussie but my OH is a Brit. Canberra is a great place to live and very family friendly. It has all the benefits of a city but feels more like a large country town. There are usually people on here from Canberra so if you have any questions someone will be around to respond.
  21. :ssign19: Way to go, congrats.
  22. A guy who works with my OH is an extra sometimes and has a great time. Says the money is OK and raves about the food etc he gets to pig out on  He only does it a couple of times a year as a bit of a hobby but it sounds as though he has a lot of fun.
  23. I laughed when I read the bit about your boss saying he won't give you a reference if you leave. I say that to my staff all the time (I've even been known to say I'll hunt them down and drag them back if they ever try to leave). The reality is of course that people do move on and I provide wonderful references for those that deserve them. As much as we like to think we can't be replaced (or that others can't be replaced) the truth is that everyone can be. It's just easier for your boss if you don't move on. The only thing you have to decide is if you want the promotion or the move more. What's most important to you - immediate career progression or the chance at a new live in Aust? Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
