1. We have been in rockhampton 15 months had a great first year both working full time on excellent money so got to travel a lot and live partner took a huge pay cut I'm now unemployed without any career prospects and we are having to cancel the wedding we booked here it's an amazing place with the right amount of money to enjoy it as everything feels expensive take that away and everything seems pretty bad we're contemplating going back but haven't got to the money to take out two cats back and start again so we'll wait and see if things pick up now the elections done. We moved for financial security and were still better off on one wage compared to the uk but without my wage we can't even afford a case of beer and that's just not living lol
2. Hey Liz unfortunately our move to Brisbane has not worked out n I have to move back to rocky in the next few weeks were now in the worst position not doing well at all. I've got lots of friends in rocky it does take time but joining groups and clubs help. Feel free to pm me if you want to meet for coffee when im back
3. Thanks everyone! Ive took the job start the 6th May so moving to brissy in two weeks stay with friends in Greenslopes for a few months with my oh finishes off and moves down so I can suss out areas and rentals. However were pretty keen on springfield lakes bit of a commute to pinkenba for me but using the gateway it should only take around 40minutes in rush hour on a good day. Not sure what hours ill be working yet so that might help. We will be starting a family in two years so we can settle into that area and hopefully makes some friends we can enjoy the city still by just staying over at friends so can get the best of both hopefully. Its the only area there seemed an abundance of new houses, we have 3 cats so need a lot of options. Starting to panic a little, got lots to do but quite excited too another big move but it cant be any harder than the last i hope!
4. Hi Ive been offered a job near the airport and the oh will be working near coopers plains we are moving down from rockhampton if i accept. I have to drive to work as there is no transport links but dont want to drive too far especially as its likely in rush hour, my oh will likely work nights and hes happy taking on a longer drive in the quiet. We like the look of springfield lakes is there anything similar north of the river? We dont want to pay more than $500 rent if possible unless i was able to walk to work. We currently live in a shiney new build and would love to move somewhere similar even if its smaller. Any thoughts? were a late 20's, early 30's couple without children for a few years so somewhere that has some pubs near and things to do would be ideal. Its very daunting i feel worse moving in oz then coming here Thanks Vicky
5. Thanks for all the info really helpful I'll have a look. Im really torn I'm a bit spoilt were I am working 4 days a week full time and a free bus to work that picks me up so the thought of Monday to Friday and big commutes are making me not want to move but it's the only way I'm going to get a permenant job I think I'll feel better if I can find somewhere I would want to live. This move was never gonna be easy n we weren't gonna move to the perfect place first off it's all just a bit scary n tiring
6. Hi my partner and I have lived in Rockhampton for a year and may have the opportunity to move to brisbane for my job. Can anyone recommend areas to look at renting we love rocky for the country town feel so hoping for a suburb with some greenery but also things to do pubs etc. Also I love horses so maybe near fields so I can get a horse. Being greedy now but can it be within 30 minutes drive of the CBD? Does this place exsist or is there anything similar? Bit scared to move as we are quite settled here but my job prospects arent good so have to move again which im not looking forward to but the fear is making me doubt brisbane but I think theres lots to do there just need to see the suburbs Any help would be great Thanks Vicky
7. yeah your right wouldnt matter if we were on the moon until job worries are over ill be wobbling lol Im planning on going into teaching as im a chemist so want to do secondary school maths and science but need PR or the fees are ludicrous so ive got a plan just need to be patient another 18 months and we'll have it and more doors will open Thanks
8. Hi All its been a while and i thought id put my experience down, there right when things are going good you stop coming on here lol So its been almost a year of living in Rockhampton qld. Its definitely not a place for everyone! Has everything you need and more but some of the mentalities are difficult to get your head around. I have a group of very good friends which I met through work Ive been very lucky as I'm not sure it would have been as easy as it has if i hadn't of met them in saying that i still feel like an outsider at times and miss england and the people there. I have a job but only a contract position and no chance of that changing and no other job prospects for my skills in the area. My partners job (sponsor) is going good although there has been a slow down. Were having to decide on the future and he has made enquiries into transferring to Brisbane as there is more opportunity there for me. Trouble is its very different to our country way of life now i think we'd lose money with them move and of course friends (again ) and we'd not have the nice house and countryside i like here but to have kids I need a permanent job. I don't think finding friends in a big city would be as easy and don't relish the idea of starting over again. I think I'm just having a bit of a wobble after a fantastic visit from my best friend and knowing it will be 18 months till i see her again and family will have been over 2 years. It is very expensive to live here and even more to holiday but wages compensate for this and we are truly better off, if i can keep this job! Anyway I love living here I like the lifestyle and the people but its very different and i do miss a lot from england and i don't know if that will ever go but were committed to the move just not sure of the place we need to live yet. Anyway for anyone moving here really consider the people your leaving if your very close to family I personally wouldn't move to the other side of the world you can get great friends but I don't think thats enough we aren't close to family and lived away from them and still struggle but everyone will do what they feel is right and hopefully it'll work out, Anyway good luck its a big move but it can work out
9.

Hi I'm not sure as haven't been looking for part time but theres definitely jobs for shop work and coffee shops so i would imagine you'd be ok. I have lived in rocky for 9 months its a good place to live very different but has everything you need. Any questions just ask <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/smile.png" alt=":)" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

10. my partner and I are on a 457 visa and I think with the right job/company there great, only way we were getting over here without waiting 5+ years and hes got a job for a life, we found the company he wanted to work for after working for similar in the UK and found they would sponsor. Havent found it restricting I am able to work thats all we need. Our visa is for 4 years but have a very clear contract that stipulates are 2 years we have to go for PR which they nominate and pay half- this is great as it cuts down the process and helps with money OR if were not happy they pay flights home. My advise is just research dont look for the visa and go with whoever is offering it do your research and be patient. Good luck to everyone its a big move and not easy at all!
11. Thanks I know I don't think I could if I tried!
12. Thanks I celebrated yesterday at a day at the races with my hubby's work social club treat very well....too well at 15 free drinks each lol my oh and I got chatty to lots of people and he was even given someone's gold xxxx tie so he's made it! Met lots of people on the karaoke we found after and have been invited fishing and for a roast so feel great we could never make so many new friends moving in the uk but the ozzies here our accent and just want to talk its really nice such friendly people! The weather is rubbish has been raining for days which is odd for winter apparently feel like I might have brought it with me lol Anyway I'll enjoy the rest of my hangover
13. Was a goth when I was younger and had it as a user name for everything since then.....must grow up lol
14. Thanks it certainly feels great I was so worried about not getting a job in my industry. Just a few more months in this horrid rental n things will be perfect, well as perfect as it can be, looking forward to having some routine again and just living here rather than me being on holiday!
15. Thanks yeah I want t wake everyone up I'm too excited lol luckily got a few friends here I can be excited with
16. Well I've been here 15 days and I'm now running round the room squealing with excitement had a job interview that was organised before I got here went very well for a temp position at the local power station however they had internal application so seemed through no fault of my own I wouldn't get the job but I've just had a call they have created a position for me and given me a 2 year contract I'm over the moon! I have another week off to enjoy then I do full time but over Tuesday to Friday so long weekends! Im just so excited and England is asleep so needed to tell someone lol
17. hey fantasia there's a load of us in rocky/gracemere if u want to pm can meet up
18. I've been here 3 days and im feeling the cold in the house first thing and early evening I'm surprised at how chilly it feels at 17-23 and I can't be acclimatised as I've just arrived this temp in the uk and I would burn, not even joking! Is there a reason behind it, wind etc? Just curious, I'm going to get a little convection heater today just to take the chill off on a morn as its holding me hostage n bed till my shipping arrives in a month then fleecy onesies asnd dressing gowns will see me though
19. Don't worry too much it can eat away at you I tortured myself it's the fear of the unknown, I'm here now so just fire all you questions and worries at me so your prepared it really is a cool place honest I had my doubt but nothing like I imagined
20. I was worried about them too but not bad at all I think I'm just tired still but if you have an outdoor area it'll be fab can stick the patio light on and fire the BBQ and it'll be cooler just being prepared helps getting into the right mind set I've come here to settle and stay and be as happy as I can so trying o just keep finding the positive in everything otherwise you could easily spiral obviously I say this now but I'll have a bad day and be ready to book my flight back lol Just seen some orbs spiders hanging above the entrance to a shop I almost called British airways lol Well best go pick the fella up n grab a takeaway as I've still not been food shopping to busy gallivanting drive through booze might be in order to cos I'm a wino in oz drink every night little and often lol
21. It's bizarre Im feeling cold cos it's not like I've been here while it was hot like the others maybe my brain just expected it not to bad though out and about in a hoodie just the houses aren't insulated and don't average anyway of being heated, mine anyway but convention heaters are pretty cheap tempted to get one in a week or so if it's still chilly once my shipment arrives with our dressing gowns we'll be fine! Loads of parks so going to see those next week for a BBQ out doors beach was nice even though it rained and was overcast but it's a bank holiday weekend so that's what happens, saw wild kangaroos near which was amazing then found a secret beach, inlet thing which we'll go back with a BBQ on a hot day! Things to prepare for dark nights it's dark at 5:30 so feels later gonna take some getting used to my body wants me to sleep lol also just being used to long shop opening hours on a weekend for food just a matter of being prepared always have an emergency BBQ supply
22. Millie we bought washers/dryers and a new kettle, toaster and Hoover as they needed replacing got them in sales so even with duty still cheaper and newer models etc can't wait till there here!!! The rest of the stuff was ours like tv, sofa 2 beds loads of clothes, coats, shoes, handbags. I got new pans and dinnerware again as was worn and wasn't sure of getting things I liked here but debenhams deliver so if your paying shipping yourself just order that online be there quicker anyway lol tv's are cheap here, big w has all sorts for the house especially kitchen so maybe just bring other stuff and start a fresh from there or online uk shops. It's much more modern than I'd anticipated not quite the UK but you do see the fashion trends peeking through just clothes I think I'll struggle with but then again I won't dress up as much here but bought all new clothes and shoes just shorts and tops and sandals to keep me going for a good while! Hope this helps it is so confusing when your starting everyone has such different experiences. Shoes Its America in a good way the people chat and wish u a good day but it doesn't feel scripted really like it I suppose on the days when Im a grumpy mare n people want to chat ill be starting a thread about them being too nice lol i love the politeness I get very aggregated by pushers and shuvvers as I apologise whether it was my fault or not like autopilot over here I did that and a lady who almost walked in front of me was like don't apologise hun it was my fault made me smile. Off to the beach shortly even though it doesn't look very warm but I'm sure it'll be gorg. Can't wait ttop my oh is on his 4 days off from Monday but th other Brits here are taking good care of me and meeting a girl from her tomorrow for my first BBQ just need to get some Ozzie friends in the mix and a job and out of this rentals into a new one with all our stuff and live will be as perfect as I can imagine,
23. Hi sadismum yes the stockland centre is my second home it's so close and has everything u need! It's warmer this morning about 20 but doesn't feel it think it's th cooling breeze a hoodie is more than enough then during the day is lovely not hot or cold. I've seen the tennis club can't wait to go!
24. Well it's 4:36am been awake for a while not sleeping more than about 3 hours a day like some sort of machine maybe it's the tedious air bed 1 month today till everything arrives very frustrating as we bought everything whilst company paid for shipping got bargains galore which I'm grateful of but should of been here as I arrived but hey ho I'm going to a charity shop tomorrow or a mooch see if there's any bits to keep us going. Been driving all over in our automatic car feel very chuffed that Im able to drive after passing my test a few weeks ago phew! This place is like America really like it friendly people need to explore more today Baz is working till Monday so I'm gonna be alone but plenty to do and quite like the feeling of pushing myself to go places feel grown up lol don't like the house were in will be in 5 more months then getting somewhere nice it's had cockroaches and a rat in roof lol but I'm being brave however I did see a month the size of a bloody sparrow tonight I wasn't brave then lol feel very at home here so laid back but I need a job for some structure so the hunt is on next week! Prices of things aren't too bad love big w get lots of bargains in there I'm doing a big food shop today and will go to each supermarket to pass the time and get a feel for everything. Won't be bbqing in this house the gardens at the front facing a main round so I'll have to get adventurous with my cooking indoors for now as want to enjoy some lovely fresh foods. Anyway id best get ready to take Baz to work then hopefully I might sneak back to bed for a few hours
