  1. I will completely agree with rail travel being really expensive. I live 20 minutes from London but for the three of us to go it costs £34 with a railcard or over £50 without.

Sofa: We got our brand new one for less then £500. Not sure if there is one in Southampton but we got our first Sofa at British Heart foundation (Furniture one) and got a lovely sofa for £90 including delivery. They also do other cheap furniture too. We also have another local second hand furniture shop called Ecco.

Eating out: I think its comparable to Sydney to be honest, I found in Sydney some places really cheap and some really expensive. I remembered one take away in Sydney it was a kebab style thing with rice was $40!!!! For take away! But then Thai take away was reasonable and other places such as the malls were very reasonable and some tavans. Same as in England, some places are really cheap and others are expensive.

Cars: Depends on what type of car you want you can get cars for £1000 or you can spend tens of thousands. Have a look maybe on gumtree?

Furnished: Unfortunately it is difficult to get furnished properties in England :( most I have ever had was part furnished.

Not sure if you both have jobs or not but personally I think its comparable. First time I went Australia the pound was very weak against the dollar and I found it ridiculous expensive in Perth and Sydney but if I was earning dollars then it would have all been relative. I went back recently and because the pound was stronger found my money went further this time.

I hope you manage to settle in, its always a big thing moving abroad but if you need any tips on places where to buy things etc sure the lovely folk on here will be able to help!

  2. Not sure why you turned this post into a political one, but I am going to ignore that.

I also agree skyscanner website you can search by month to also find which date is the cheapest and it compares all airlines.

  3. Hi,

I am coming on a WHV in September and I will have a honours degree in Diagnostic Radiography - which in Oz in known as Medical Radiation Tech come June. I am wondering that when my WHV runs out I could apply for an EOI. How does it work? My skill is on the skilled workers.

Please can somebody explain to me how an EOI works. (a non sponsored) - I am ideally wanting to work and live as a citizen of Oz after my WHV has expired and can I do so by submitting this EOI as my skill set is on the list.

Will I have to find work as a Medical Rad tech before I apply for the EOI? Forgot to add - I will be hoping to apply on the subclass 189.

    Thanks Alix

Medical Radiation Therapist is on both the SOL and CSOL list which is good, you may need to get registration for this profession but I am not 100% sure on that. Also I believe your need so many years work experience after your qualification to qualify? Someone else may be of more help though. Sorry.

  4. Hope your feeling in less pain now, I would log a police report in case they are also doing it to other people local in the area. If you start feeling dizzy/headaches then seek medical advice. I feel your pain I had something simular happen to me when I was bike riding with my daughter last year they hit me luckily didn't hit my daughter. Was so so angry.

  5. We are a family of 3 and we managed on just under half of that Salary living in zone 6 of London and still managed two European holidays a year and running a car. (Though we did not have to pay tube fares as I worked on the tube at the time). However we did not go out every week and eat out much, so I guess it depends on your lifestyle. Only place I think would be difficult is living closer to London.

Good luck on the move I am sure your be okay :)

  6. 1)Jenolan caves ( in Blue Mountains)

    2)Royal National park

    a) ferry from Cronulla to Bundeena in RNP, nice beach, kayak hire, aboriginal rock carvings

    b) drive to Audley in RNP, visitor`s center with nice café, rent a canoe and paddle up the Kangaroo Creek, maybe a hike

    3)Symbio zoo

last 2 are about an hour drive south of Sydney, that`s where we live, I am sure there are a lot of places in the north that someone can tell you about

Thank you very much for the suggestions will have a look into them, I did the Jenolan caves last time but would happily return there again as there was many caves and we only did one of them.

Will have a look at the other suggestions :)

  7. Hi all,

I know this is probably a silly question but I wanted to bring some gifts over to Australia when I go over to visit, and was thinking of buying some Lush products for my friend. Would this be an issue with quarantine and do I need to declare these products on my arrivals card?

I normally buy things like bags etc (no food etc) so never had to worry about ticking yes on my arrivals card but know she likes Lush.

    Thanks you the help!

  8. Hi!

Not sure if this is the right section if it is not please move :)

I am visiting my friend in Sydney in April and she's asked me where I would like to visit. However I can not think of really any places that I did not visit last time and was after some suggestions.

The places I visited last time were:

    Weekend in Blue mountains

    Darling Harbour

    Bondi Beach,

    The Rocks,

    Manly Beach,

    Featherdale Wildlife park

    Australia museam

    Olympic park/swimming pool

    Botanic gardens

    Paddy's market

    Went up the tower

    General wondering around the city

Any suggestions on places I have not visited that I should see? I have thought of the city zoo so far. All suggestions welcome :-)

    Thank you

  9. I never got asked for proof just went straight through. Though do you have online banking that you could access if needed? Otherwise maybe someone can scan a copy and email it to you.

I wouldn't worry though, if you can prove it other ways, and I never had to show my bank statements.

    thanks

    Lawron

  10. I know its probably not what you want to hear but just my output. I had a friend who went over and studied at a University in NSW she was there 3/4 years (Lost count lol) in total she did a degree, prior to going over her occupation was on the list for the course she was doing and she was hoping to get a graduate visa and sponsorship afterwards. However in her last year her occupation came off the list and after her graduation she had to return back to the UK. 4 years on she's still in the UK.

I trained at University over here in the UK and got the three years experience in office management and was just about to put my qualification and work experience for skills assessment to apply for a visa. Then...my job also went off the skills list.

We are still fighting to come over and my OH is retraining as a chef at the moment and currently has a cook job we are hoping to move in a few years time once he has enough experience behind him. His getting his Cookery diploma at the moment and will be finished in Spring. However we also run the risk of that being taking off. All you can do is try, his relatives in Perth told us, "If you want it desperate enough your find a way" and we are determined to go, just trying out best to go lol.

Best of luck in whatever decision you do but just don't make yourself completely miserable in doing a course you wont enjoy (We both have an interest in what we studied/worked).

    Good luck

  11. Hi

I'm looking to book flights for April and I have been finding a few at 420-460 mark with the cheaper airlines. How late would you leave it to get them kind of prices. I don't want to book before xmas if I can help it, and any tips to get it cheaper than that or is that the lowest price pretty much.

    Thanks

I assume that's a single fare? A lot depends on what time of year your flying where in Australia you are flying too. I have never seen it as low as £420 but have often seen around the £500 mark for a single.

  12. It is an awkward one because re-joining at 15 when GCSE's are going on may be difficult. Could you wait till she finishes her exams in Oz, or wait till shes 18 so she can decide fully? Though throwing up on the slip side if she wants to go to University in the UK you need to have lived in the UK 3 years prior to going otherwise your counted as international I believe. I think it may be difficult for her education and waiting a couple of years may be a better option?

Sorry can not offer any other help just my opinions.

  13. For hairdressing apart from the 457 option you can go for either visa 190 or 489 but currently they are only sponsoring hairdressing for Northern Territory, Queensland (for 489 visa) or Tasmania. 489 you would need to live in a regional area and be nominated by a state, whereas 190 you need to be nominated by a state but do not have to live in a regional area.

Hope this is of some help. Information taken from immigration website and a search as to which states are currently taking hairdressers (Which may be dated so double check).

  14. I'd actually recommend the Sydney Tower Eye. The views are nearly as good and its a fraction of the price.

Agree with this comment. I booked online and saved about $10 think it was about $18. Also if you go just before sunset is due you can see the views both in day light and when its all dark which is pretty cool. I originally thought about the Bridge climb but after seeing the price decided against it.

In regards of money maybe have two weeks of finding your feet and doing some tourist stuff then work for a couple of months then have a month off and pick work up again as and when you need it :)
