  1. Hey! No chance of you staying over night? If not no worries, but more the merrier! and i'm sure we could arrange a second one at some point if the first one is successful.

Not sure about overnight as it gets expensive with hotels unless pomsonoz got a cheap block booking lol. I will keep an eye out on this thread still, as never know maybe someone with a car near me might be going. X

  2. Just seen this thread, thought oh august would be good for me. Just looked on national rail and bristol is just over four hours for me due to having to go to London first (no cross country trains going west) and back out again. If I went could only stay for an hour or two due to trains so will have to give it a miss. If there is one in London or even Midlands such as Birmingham would love to come at some point. Hope you all have a great time!

  3. If we were to settle somewhere properly in the UK then probably Cornwell maybe st Ives or Crantock. I didn't mind harrogate and Otley when I lived in Yorkshire. We currently live in the south east and we like it here have good schools and London and Cambridge are accessible fairly easily.

  4. Thanks guys!

Ozmaniac - we thought that ICT Systems Engineer on the SOL is support-related no? (Rick's current job title is Systems Engineer.)

Does anyone know where can we find job descriptions for these roles? I do see lots more ICT Support roles such as Systems Administrator/Manager on the CSOL too, but again I'd like to know what exactly these roles are and also how they are assessed by ACS.

Thanks again for the links etc.

Have a look at this website, put in the job and you can get a list of the requirements/description of the job:

  5. Hi welcome to the forums, I can only help with a little bit but sure someone else will be able to come along and help better. Comments in red.

Hi, I'm new to this site and this forum, so apologies in advance for my obvious ignorance and excitement!

Just beginning the long and arduous process of emigration to Oz. (Me, my Husband, and our 2 kids, age 7 and 5.)

Rick and I worked and travelled in Oz (on a working Visa) 11 years ago (feels like yesterday ah!!!) and LOVED every minute of it! Although we know that our future in Oz will not be anything like our bumming/visitor experience, we are still very much of the opinion that Oz can offer a better future for us and our children, than the one we would have in Northern Ireland.

So, we have decided to bite the bullet and having done some preliminary research online; I am already baffled....

Rick, (my hub) is an IT Support Specialist and his profession is listed on the SOL.

I know that he will need to be assessed by ACS. My questions are :-

Does he need to complete an Expression of Interest?Yes but he will need to get his skilled assessed first and do his IELTS test first before submitting an EOI

What is the starting point - do we really need a Migration Agent or if his job is listed on the SOL is it a fairly straight forward VISA application? No many people do it without an agent to save money. If you follow the checklists correctly you should be fine doing it yourself especially if your okay with paperwork.

Which Visa do we need to apply for under the SOL? How many points do you currently have? Have a look at the migration website and the calculator to let us know how many points you think you have. You can get extra points by sitting the IELTS test by scoring high. This will then let you know if you need to apply for possibly state sponsorship to get the extra points.

Do we also need state sponsorship?Depending on how many points you have?

Finally, does he need to get a job prior to actually getting the Visa? Generally no if you going for skilled independent visa then no, if you are for example going for state sponsorship in WA I think they have some conditions attached to certain jobs that means you need a job first.

I have already contacted a few migration agents, including The Emigration Group and Signet Consulting, and am thinking of paying the initial Appraisal fee of around £90 to kick start the process, but don't want to throw money down the drain if I can do this myself. I am fairly admin savvy but at the same time, want to ensure that our application is as fast and as good quality as it can possibly be - ti is a costly process afterall and we want to get it right from the start off.

Anyway any advice is very much appreciated and thanks for taking time to read this.

Sorry i can not be of much more use but have a look at the following link if you haven't already: http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/Find-a-visa.aspx

Should tell you the requirements etc. Hopefully someone else can help better with your questions.

  6. I have to agree with most of what pablo has said.

It is good if the economy is picking up but I haven't felt it in my family. Every year our wages have been getting lower in relative terms with the price of goods getting higher but with no pay rise. Jobs appear harder to come by, I remember when I could get a job really easy and now its extremely difficult. Travel is more expensive both in local buses and trains and going abroad. Had a look at holidays and for the same holiday we did last year with the same dates its now £200 more expensive. We had to once last year use a food bank which was the most depressing thing I had to do (Due to banks closing my account for no reason, didn't owe them anything which meant all our incoming payments got bounced back until we had a new bank account sorted). Shops are closing down in our town and when new shops open they are charity shops.

I used to work on London underground and I have mates who do not know if they will have a job at the end of the year and have mortgages to pay as their position is being made redundant. Personally I have not seen anything positive with the recession being over but I do hope that this changes soon and people like my family who are currently not very well off but scrap by even with both of us working can have better prospects :) in the meantime oh is going to pay to go back to college and train as a chef (At the moment his been training on the job and holds down two jobs to fund college part time in September), and I can keep job hunting for a better paid job.

I better stop now before I rant any more lol. I think the point I am trying to make is the points pablo has made. And I am one of those annoying people who go to the reduction section (Though I do wait patiently and try and be fair) and put food in the freezer when there is the opportunity too.

  7. Hi guys. I've posted here a few times. You may recall I've had a bit of a turbulent time overthinking wether to move back to the UK or not. It's finally happening in June. I'm just hear to express my good news. I had an informal chat/interview today in Brisbane with the head of UK operations for the company I work for here. It went well, no absolute guarantees but pretty close to it.

    I can't wait for what's to come!

Fingers crossed on the transfer with your current employer. Best of luck!

  8. I didn't get any snow here last year :-S found the weather to be pleasant the last year with a record warm summer according. However enjoy your trip back to Perth and hopefully the reasons you left last time are solved. You heading back over soon? I would love to be in Perth :-)

  9. Wow you would have thought a warning/quiet word would have happened though I know as a visitor from the past you can get fined for the helmet aspect. I have heard Victoria fine heavier in price then other areas too. :-(

Unfortunately I am unable to help but hopefully others will be able too. My only thinking is if your planning on coming back on another visa then you should differently pay the fine and then appeal anything you disagree on to avoid any record against you.

Sorry I couldn't have been of any help.

  10. Haven't flown on their dreamliner so can't comment on the specs of the plane. Though can confirm Brunei airport is still very basic. I only had a 4 hour stop over at Brunei but I believe if you have over 5 you can pay a small amount to go on a city tour from the airport which then brings you back. Also second the stop over in dubai which isn't advertised. I had just under two hour stop over at dubai but actually enjoyed the extra stop with the little one though can be an inconvenience for some

  11. I would say not to make any decisions whilst your on holiday and wait until you get citizenship before making any decision. It sounds a difficult decision to make as being mortgage free is a very appealing situation to be in compared to having a big mortgage. Would you consider moving to another part of Oz which may be a little cheaper to get a property? Maybe lease your UK property on a short term (6 months) to give yourselves more time to decide? Either way I guess just make the decision where you feel your be more happiest and if you have citizenship in Australia you will always have options.

  12. I have flown Malaysia and royal Brunei no issues with either. Royal Brunei didn't serve alcohol but you could bring your own though drinking on planes doesn't really bother us. As long as the plane gets you there safe and customer service is alright then it doesn't really matter unless you can afford to upgrade your ticket.

  13. Hi

Do not have any personal experience but just had a look at the UK government website and it says

"Your application will take at least 4 weeks from when your declaration form is received by Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK.Applications may take longer if:

    • HM Passport Office need to ask you for more information or documents
    • the photographs you send are rejected

Don’t book any travel until you have a valid passport. If you need to travel more urgently, apply for an Emergency Travel Document"

So fingers crossed it should come soon if there is no problems with the information or photographs. Otherwise could you apply for an emergency travel document?

Hope it arrives soon for you!

P.S it may be taking longer due to Easter holidays and more applications around this time of year.

  14. I hope this story isn't true that she wants to abort to go on Big Brother that would be terrifying disgusting especially with how far she is into her pregnancy! Certainly should not be allowed and she certainly isn't in the correct mind frame. If she did end up on Big Brother she will be kicked out within the first week she certainly wont get the fame she is craving.

  15. Hoping to fly from Manchester to cairns, mid-end June.

I had a quote from IOM and they're £500 more expensive than what I've seen online :/ only benefit would be the extra baggage allowance but that would only be to Sydney, if have to pay the extra baggage allowance to cairns.

ive spent a hour this afternoon looking at prices for return fares but they're all more expensive...not by much mind! Don't understand why one way fares are only just cheaper?! Rather annoying

I agree with you it should be around half the price of a return. It is the same with train tickets really annoying.

Have done some searching (I enjoy looking at flight prices sad I know) and I have found following:

Having a look. Flying Manchester - Cairns 12th June can get flight £662 pp with Singapore Airlines (but with a 14 hour stop over in Singapore and then change at Brisbane)

Manchester - Sydney 15 or 16th June £565 pp with Etihad then Sydney to Cairns is £63pp

Manchester - Brisbane 17th June £573pp again with Singapore Airlines (no long stop over though) and then around £49pp from Brisbane to Cairns

London to Cairns 21st June with Maylasia airlines & Qantas £662pp

Skyscanner website is really good for comparing :)

On average a return is coming out as around £100-£200pp more
