  1. Thanks Pam, and also Mike & Sue. It sounds like this is a club that will run and run. We're really excited at the prospect of meeting so many friendly and helpful people; in some ways it feels like we know you already. Your advice and support has taken away a lot of the loneliness waiting for that 143! John & Eirian
  2. At last we're flying to Sydney next Thursday to validate our visa, arrange Medicare, order a car, etc., etc. We'd love to meet some of you Sydneysiders to pick your brains and compare notes. As you organised the last team meeting, Marian, any change of repeating it between 18 June and 25 June? We fly back to clear the house, etc on 10 July, hoping to return for good by the end of September. Fingers crossed. Really looking forward to meeting some of you soon. John & Eirian
  3. We were thinking of buying a new barbeque to tide us over this summer in England before emigrating for good in September. Just when we had decided on make and model, we heard that UK BBQs don't work in Aus because of gas pressure settings or the type of gas itself. Is this true? Can anyone who has actually taken their gas BBQ with them please enlighten us? Many thanks. John & Eirian
  4. What an incredibly useful and helpful reply this is. Practical and so sensible. John & Eirian
  5. I'd advise you to transfer the 2nd VAC money to your S-i-L and get him to do the bankers draft/cheque, Mike & Sue. There was no way we could get our Commonwealth bank in Manly to do the draft without a hand-written letter from us, authorising them to do so; the alternative was appearing in person at the bank! Perth meanwhile, don't allow direct internet transfers ( cheque or bankers draft only) as methods of payment, so we had no option but to waste 10 days or so before the draft finally got to Perth. Good luck - you're almost there! John & Eirian
  6. PS we posted originals to Perth and kept copies. Then rang them to check they had arrived safely 10 days later. J&E
  7. hi Val & Matt, As you will see on the Tracker, we front- loaded big time. It worked really well for us. Once we got our CO, it took no time at all to get our invitation to pay the 2nd VAC. Once that happens, you know that it's all over and that you will get your visa. In fact, our CO complimented us on our efficiency in getting medicals, pc, etc done so early. She said it made her job so much easier. Good luck. I'm sure you won't have to wait long now. John & Eirian
  8. Why is the citizenship that important? Surely, getting her feet firmly on Aussie soil is what it is all about? John & Eirian
  9. Our daughter, Rachel, just did the AOS interview in Sydney at the end of Feb and got approval within two weeks. So you could be in for a nice surprise. Hope so! John & Eirian
  10. Hi Alan, Does this mean that income from Super funds are free of tax in Australia? John & Eirian
  11. I never thought the day would come when we was happy to receive a request for $75,930, but it has! Now the final hurdle, I think...... how to get a Bank cheque paid to Perth PVC (we call it Bankers draft here) from our Australian bank account, when we're here in the UK enjoying the sunshine. Any ideas? John & Eirian
  12. It's worth investigating transferring your pensions to an Australian "self-managed" pension. I haven't looked into this in any detail yet, but I have been assured that there are significant tax advantages for such schemes. Good luck! John & Eirian
  13. Perhaps the rules are different for online submissions. We had ours done in Cardiff a good 8 months before we got our CO. I know the results were posted to Sydney by Spire Hospital. John & Eirian
  14. Thanks a lot, Val. No idea what a HAP ID is, but the reason we got our meds done so far in advance was simply because we thought that was the only thing that could ruin our dream, so ... best to get it done and out of the way before we got too committed. Anyone can book their meds whenever they like. The only restriction is that they guess they'll get their visa within twelve months of that date. We chose July 2011 for our meds cos we guessed that we'd have our visa before July 2012. As the guys say, simples!.... phwwxxx. John & Eirian
  15. Yessssss! We got our CO two days ago and suddenly feel quite light-headed about it all. Perhaps it was the champagne we cracked in celebration? Thirteen months now seem to have skipped by, and we're busy completing our Form 80, having previously submitted medicals, Police checks, etc. For those still waiting or joining the queue, take heart. It comes round to your turn in the end; before you know it. Thanks to all who kept us sane and informed over the last year. See you in Sydney quite soon! John & Eirian
  16. Agree totally, SMD. I s'pose making lots of £65 payments is not totally practical! Perhaps this needs a phone call to sort it out? Good luck. John & Eirian
  17. Hi SMD, Is my computer playing tricks on me? Using the same link http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/990i/converter.htm and putting in $100 it converts to £65. I make this 1.5384 to the £. Saving you even more? John
  18. This is totally fantastic. How exciting for you and what a bonus. Shows there's some fire in us oldies yet! There's only one heaven? Good on ya, mates. John & Eirian
  19. Not so, SMD. The rate at the Oz High Commission in London is fixed once a year, and for the next six months or so it is $1.52. Try the Oz immi website and see. John & Eirian
  20. Apart from details of birth (date, place, gender) nothing more was asked for on Form 30 re children. Incidentally, same details were required for all siblings and parents, whether dead or alive. John & Eirian
  21. For nayone needing to pay their second VAC shortly, it's best to pay in £ to the Oz High Commission in London. They're using $1.52 to the £ whereas the actual exchange rate at the mo is closer to $1.47 john & Eirian
