  5. Hi Yes, it's true that you don't have to have the sticker,but....... When going for a car loan, applying for a first home owners grant, applying for our first tental, applying for a job, it has been so much esier and more convinient for both parties, just to flip open your passport and give them the proof there and then. This is just in our own personal experience. Chris x

  10. Hiya Wendy No, you are definatley not alone We were at Kingston up untill about a month ago, but have now bought a house at Allens Rivulet ( inbetween Margate and Sandfly ). Unfortunatley I'm unable to meet up during the week, but we would be able to meet up on the friday if you fancy? As far as the venue goes, have only been out for a drink once in central Hobart, so couldnt really suggest anywhere. chris x
  11. Hiya Wendy Havn't had a look on PIO for a while, so only just seen your post. We'd also love to have a meet up! We're a family of 5 who moved over nearly 2 years ago now, eldest is nearly 18 then there's another 2 at 9 and 7 ( all boys ). As we've got a built in babysitter, any weekend would be good for us, let us know and we'll be there! Chris x
  12. Hi I'm afraid we've accepted an offer a few weeks ago on our property that we've been trying to sell for nearly a year. Just got to the stage where we were glad to be shut of it, ( not that it's gone through yet ) So, yes, we've sold at rock bottom, looks like the exchange rate is getting worse by the day, but what can you do? We're just gunna cross our fingers and hope the exchange rate goes up in the next month or so, before we exchange the cash from the sale. In the mean time, we're just buying a property over here, so hope it's good timing on our part on one side at least! Chris x
  13. Great to hear your first impressions of Tas are good ones! We're very proud to call this home ourselves, and love everything about it. Hope the new jobs going well! Chris x

  15. Hi Dean, We have just been approved for a mortgage, and i have only 1 years worth of accounts. This is with the commonwealth bank. The only stipulation we had though, was that we had to pay off some car finance we had before they would lend us it. Regards Chris x
  16. Hi Was hoping you might be able to answer this on behalf of my ( aged ) parents. If i transfer my private pension to oz, ( i am here on a bridging visa, awaiting the grant of an 804 ) and i get an english state pension, would this expose me to any income tax either here, in Australia or in the UK? Thanks in advace
  17. Hi Rick So the weather seems as though it's going to be picking up a bit now according to the local forcast, so you can at least enjoy a bit of lovely sunshine while you're job hunting! We've just picked my mum and dad up from the airport yesterday for a 3 month stay, so obviously we'll be keeping busy on the entertainment front for a good while. Might do a bit of fishing at midway point tomorrow, and see if we can catch enough flathead for a feed! Chris x
  18. Hi Rick Welcome to Hobart, though, not on one of the best days we've had for a while, lol. I can't help you with a job or even a car, but if you want a good haircut in a friendly barbers, then come to my shop Jacko's Clip Joint at Moonah, and I'll give you a good Poms in Oz discount when you come through. I'm sure you'll love Hobart, and good luck on the job front. Chris x
  19. Ha, sounds about right to me! Chris x
  20. Hi Well done to you. Perseverence does pay off in the end. Good luck with your future! Chris x
  21. Forgot to mention that the younger boys both go to Kingston Sea Scouts, which is for boys and girls. They're really friendly there and our kids love going, it's also a great way to meet the locals. Chris x
  22. Hi Yes, there's an ever expanding shopping centre in Kingston ( Channel Court ) with coffe shops, take-aways, and florists etc, which is great, though don't get me wrong, nothing like a shopping centre you would see over in the uk. One thing to note though, it also lacks the local youths hanging about in intimidating groups, which I'm sure you'll be pleased about, lol. Two of our younger sons go to Kingston Primary school, which they really like, and our older son went to Kingston High school before going to Hobart College, all of which seem to be pretty good schools. There is a great sports centre here, right next to Kingston High School. And last, but not least is the fantastic beach. Chris x
  23. http://au.totaltravel.yahoo.com/travel-ideas/news-opinions/news/a/-/15176353/hobart-makes-lonely-planet-list/?src=y7homepage I'm so proud!! Chris x
  24. Hiya We're living in Kingston at the moment ( and have been for about 16 months ). When we decidid to live here, ( straight from the Uk ) we did so as we thought it would be a good place to ease ourselves and our kids into our new life. This was because it was near to shops and schools and all the facilities that we were familiar with in the uk. Our eldest was nealy 16 at the time of our move so he was the one that we worried about most with regards to settling in etc. ( the younger ones were 5 and 7 ) and luckily we havn't had a bit of trouble with any of them. Also, Kingston is only a 5 min or so commute to Hobart, and many surrounding areas are also within a relativley short journey. Good luck on wherever you decide, and if we can be of any help to you just give us a shout. Chris x
