  1. Bridge Clinic Maidenhead £193 Knightsbridge £220 Spire Hartswood £300, all per person You could have a trip up the West End, do the business and still have £150 to spend in Harrods compared with Brentwood.
  2. Hi Phoebe, You're really spoilt for choice living up north, I moan about the cost of my 'local' but it's only 30 miles away, but think Manchester or Edinburgh for your 'local'. The AA think the traveling time about the same but Edinburgh is closer in miles. United Kingdom – Panel Doctors
  3. I have linked this over on BEP as I think one of the posters used them this year. They are our closest location but are one of the dearest on the list ( beating Knightsbridge:realmad: ) but then where is the competition?
  4. I think you will find the paper work is the same if you use an agent or not.
  5. I think maybe you are being too polite to mention the result of these agents 'giving up' is clients money going down the pan. In the 2 years I have been reading the forums loads of threads of Poms losing their money to Agents going bust. The rate of closures does seem to have slowed up now so maybe a case of the strongest survive.
  6. Try this if you have about £5000 spare. Passenger Service to and from Australia & New Zealand with The Cruise People At least you can keep an eye on your container on some routes.
  7. As self employed we have never found we have have paid someone else's tax or vis-visa because of the use of a reference number and there must be millions (of people) paying into that account. It's more a question of will to change the system or add another option of payment, rather than if it can be done.
  8. Good idea Gill, however we would still seem to be going round 2 sides of a triangle when if Perth would accept direct transfers the payment would go straight there bypassing any family anxietys. It would only require sort code, account number plus reference number (given by CO?). Maybe when they set up to allow payment by credit card the exchange rate was a lot less volatile and the cost was less. This is not the case now and needs to be revised as the rate can change by 5 cents or more in a few days and for two 2nd vac payments 5 cents can move the total payment by over £1000. That is too much in my view to have to guess the amount to preload on a credit card. As this only happens once to each family I guess no one seems keen in Perth to improve the system, but in the long term it would make it so much simpler.
  9. The safest route would be for Perth to wake to to the 21st century and give a sort code and account number so the Forex draft could be sent direct to them, Simples.
  10. Even better as you would only 'get' $1.68 for your hard earned £.
  11. Vindy has replied with this message on BEP in case you miss it with all the different sites you have been on. Hi Mollymoog, My wife asked the same question to our case officer I have attached his answer. Hello Les,>> You only need to make entry before the date, you can leave immediately> after and return when you are ready.>> If you fail to make entry before the required date, the visa will be> cancelled and monies maybe refunded after the migration review period> ceases.>> This is a long winded process and can take some considerable time.>> You need to really contemplate whether you really want to proceed with> application or not.>> If you decide to withdraw the application and lodge another application> when you are more prepared, please submit a signed letter from all> applicants asking for the application to be withdrawn. I would suggest that you email your case officer and let them know your problem, we found that they were very understanding and were able to put us at ease with any questions. Good luck and best wishes Les & Babs
  12. Ask your agent, isn't that what you pay them for? It may have gone to him, if not, if the money has been taken your on the road, you usually get acknowledgment before a CO so don't worry.
  13. Yes you can open all of the major Oz Bank accounts in the UK, you can also transfer direct to your son/daughter's Oz bank account using Forex brokers, all of which takes time to set up. You may be best reading up on this forum as it would take pages on here to go through the options. Money & Finance - PomsInOz Forum IMHO converting some money as you go along is a safe option in case you hit the second vac payment at the year low on the exchange rate.
  14. $ Rate alert :policeman: Just slipped through $1.76 on an upward trend.:jiggy: Best day so far this month but as world stock markets wobble there could be more to come. :skeptical: Could be worth a small transfer if you have the readies, just to keep your average up. Every little helps.
  15. There is a prog on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm about the shippers Crown, could be worth watching so that you don't just have the exchange rate to worry about.
  16. As others have stated you should pay 10% in Oz (plus another 10% in the UK if you are a SRT payer).:policeman: However a lot of the Oz banks are lazy and set up the account at the default 40% (ish) deduction if they do not have the TRN. They rely on you claiming the tax back at a later stage. I would write/email to them stating that you are resident in the UK and you should only pay 10% tax on the interest. Tell them you require the interest now for your visa payment and do not want a refund at some later date.
  17. As Gollywobbler has said for medical reasons or to speed up the process. You need to remember that the time you have to validate your visa will start ticking from the date of your police check or medical so if you have a house to sell after you know you been granted a visa (in our case) you may not want to have them done before you are asked by your case officer so that you have the maximum time to tie up things in the UK, just horses for courses.
  18. The first you will know about it is the courier online tracker, next your bank statement and then when you have just about forgot about it along will come a letter with your acknowledgment date on it. :wubclub:
  19. To be fair the £20 is not the banks only charge, they also skim another 1% or 2% off the exchange rate.:shocked:
  20. Given the amount of money involved I would also try Moneycorp and UKForex for a quote, last month when I did a transfer UKForex gave the best quote. It costs nothing to register with these people so best use them all to find the best price. Another option is to transfer the funds to your son/daughter and then get them to send a bankers draft for you to Perth. As Steve said you are best not to use your UK bank for the currency conversion.
  21. You have to remember Steve this is the Poms In Oz site, it's pretty brutal out there.:goofy::swoon::GEEK::frown::cry:
  22. I would not expect paying in London to be cheaper for a long time. The rate is set twice a year and always starts below the current exchange rate. It has only been worth while paying in London twice in recent years because of the rapid collapse of sterling within the six month set period. The current rate of $1.57 has not been breached since it was set and we all hope that will not happen again. Mikensue's suggestion to transfer funds to your siblings account when you feel the rate is good is also an option. You could build up funds in Oz $s so that 50% (for example) of the money you require is already converted and when the time comes to pay you would just need to convert the rest.
  23. You have declare if you take more than $10,000 through customs, once you do that no problem. Well it was for us, then everything we read about customs has at least 2 versions.
  24. Try Courier Quote - Shipment Details Under £20 for up to 1kg, under £25 for up to 2kg, we used them and the quote is for tracked DHL all the way from your house.
