  1. I believe it's around the $45,000 mark somewhere. They are then paid off by additional tax on your income. And as has been pointed out in the thread you are not entitled to defer your fees like this unless you are an Australian citizen.
  2. Interesting that you should say this VERYSTORMY. As a current student who was faced with the possibility of having to go to University in the UK, possibly, I am glad that I didn't. I don't like the look of the "partying" culture that UK students experience more-so than Aussie students. And also that there are SO many degrees available in the UK... heck there are so many rubbishy "throw away" degrees (that's how I refer to them as)... you can even do a degree in stand-up comedy... yeah. There's a degree for everything you can imagine now. I don't see the point. Most degrees allow you to specialize in a field here. You don't need a whole degree on something so pin-pointed and fine-lined.
  3. Depends where you are in the country Tina? Education is charged in band 1 so... from 2013 the fees per unit for Education are $733.50 each. Multiply that by 8 = $5868 per year. It will vary by subject area that they want to teach. It does go up a little bit each year. 2012 was $706 per unit. I'm doing Bachelor of Education at QUT (Brisbane, QLD). My 2 areas are English and Film & Media, which are classed as Arts subjects so they're also in band 1 with Education. I was originally going to do BCT (Business Communications & Technologies) which is charged at a band 3 rate because they're 'business' units (even though they're directly related to Education and can't be taken as part of any other course at the University - go figure - in my books that makes them education subjects!!!) but I changed my mind because I didn't want to pay over $1100 for them, it's the same with subjects like IT & Business. Needless to say I started out doing an IT degree. And it sucked. It was way above my abilities and mental capacity. I failed 2 units and I'm ashamed because that's $2000 wasted *literally* Just be glad that he doesn't want to be a vet/dentist... they're nearly $10,000 per year. OH - and an EDIT just for the record... the amount of debt that he will come out with if he does the degree in the UK (now) is going to be huge. It's tripling to 9,000 quid per year as of 2012 and remember that's ONLY for the tuition fees. You still have accommodation, alcohol and the like to pay for somehow. And hope that he might be able to get a job. And that you put his being able to return to Aus if he wants to on the line if he goes there and you stay here. And that it's more likely that he'd be able to commute cheaply here rather than having to find accommodation.
  4. As someone who's a current University student and been through the application process and the like myself I think it's actually hard to tell whether GCSEs and AS levels really are 'worthless'. They used my GCSEs to assess English proficiency. My A level grades were more highly regarded here than they would have been in the UK (by a great deal as well). I got mostly Cs and that amounted to a rank that was the equivalent to an OP (Overall Position) of about 8 (which is quite high, and I needed to achieve a 13 to get into the course I wanted). I don't believe So it's one that can go either way. With regards to your predicament... kids generally start Uni aged 17/18 here in Qld. So it's not an un-manageable age gap. The subjects you mention I can't imagine her having any issues with those if she did them at GCSE level. They'll be a bit of a step up but not anything drastic. Key tip would be to remember to look carefully at what the entry requirements are for each course at University when deciding on subjects. It IS very different depending on the University. Example... IT QUT - OP: 13, Pre-requisites: nil. Assumed Knowledge: Maths, English (4, sa ...SA means Sound Achievement). Assumed knowledge mean they just assume but don't require you to have either. UQ - OP: 31, Pre-requisites: Maths B (4, SA), English (4, SA). See almost the same course with widely different entry requirements... So that's just something worth considering.
  5. Lots of kids seem to have iPhones I've noticed... BlackBerry isn't very popular here at all. Can't remember the last time I saw someone using one at all! I had one 2 years ago and it was rubbish. :biglaugh:
  6. Haha well... as there's nothing for an 18 year old undergraduate lad who wants a career in IT/teaching maybe lecturing/tutoring/training in IT then there is no prospects for me in the UK really with fees about to rise to £9000+ per annum. Saying that, my job may be in danger here as I'm a contractor and my office is currently off limits due to the flooding and we have a mass conference call in the morning so we shall see what happens but after the email I got this morning it's not looking good... I already have my place at Queensland University of Technology and all being well with flood cleanup operations, I should start on 28th February. Aside from that I'm currently assuredly loved up with a fellow pommy girl on the sunshine coast. Meanwhile my mum wants to go home because of the flooding. I'm not sure why. But I wish she would stop talking about it because I have everything here, where I had nothing in England and now it's doing my head in. :arghh: Cheers LukeM :goofy:

    huntsman spider

Spider in the house yesterday, didn't know what he was but I was trying to gently knock him back over the step and out the door but he wasn't being obedient so I splattered him on the floor with my shoe. Just don't take any risks, me!
