She has a students loan via the Commonwealth Bank/ Dept Education Employment and Training (DEET) dating back to 1996-7 for 7000 Aus $ (then). She has been living here for 12 years with me and we now plan to move back together. We are worried that this may be a problem as the form asks if we have any oustanding debts to the Aus govt/ civil depts.. Quoll Posted June 2, 2010 Share Posted June 2, 2010 The ATO will know that she has a HECS debt which will have been steadily accruing and she will have to pay that off via her tax returns once she starts earning a reasonable amount otherwise that part of her debt will continue to accrue at a low rate of interest but it will still be there. If she reneged on the Commonwealth Bank loan then she could be in a bit more trouble - they may have written it off or they may have tried chasing it - best check with the Commonwealth but the simple answer is yes, she does have debts at least with the government.
