Freckleface
Think rego is based on the weight of the vehicle, whether it is a commercial or private vehicle etc but am not 100% sure. You can pay it 6 monthly but it is often more expensive to do that.
pintpot
It's state dependent. So you need to check the pages of the state highway authority you are heading for in order to find out Here in NSW, it varies depending on size of vehicle as measured by kerb weight. The rego fee here doesn't include the CTP insurance, you have to buy that first to be able to register the car. However, if you sell/transfer it, the CTP is attached to the rego and goes automatically to the new owner (so if you buy one second hand, it comes with CTP insurance attached) CTP insurance here won't see you much change out of $500. And the rego for most family cars is $321. So it's $800+ a year, and on top of that you need to buy extra insurance if you want fully comp cover, and that will probably be well over $500 as well. So not cheap http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/feesconcessions/registrationfees.html
JoandJon
It definitely varies between states - here in Vic, the insurance is part of the rego
